Its very high adaptability demand makes autonomic computing (AC), and in particular, personal autonomic computing (PAC), an ideal enabling technology. Some generic AC framework has been proposed in the literature but without considering the dynamic deployment and re-configuration of pervasive service components in a self-controlled manner. This paper makes some preliminary attempts towards these two issues. In particular, a service component self-deployment algorithm using partitioning techniques is proposed and evaluated. A simple service re-configuration algorithm is also presented. In addition, an AC environment is proposed and its major building blocks being discussed. This AC environment serves as the container of the proposed service component self-deployment and self-configuration mechanisms. A prototype of the system has been designed and implemented. Experiment results have shown the effectiveness of the proposed mechanisms.","PeriodicalId":377538,"journal":{"name":"2009 International Conference on Complex, Intelligent and Software Intensive Systems","volume":"8 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2009-03-16","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"116892014","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Information overflow is directly related to this problem. In this work we propose a knowledge discovery methodology to retrieve useful and novel information from raw data stored in a DBMS. We used ALSDB, a database that has been built suitably to access structured information obtained from the questionnaires produced in the Linguistic Atlas of Sicily (ALS) project. The ALS project is a decennal joint effort led by researchers at the Dipartimento di Scienze Filologiche e Linguistiche of the University of Palermo that has the purpose to track and study the geo-linguistic and lexicographic processes about the function and usage of the Sicilian dialect.The main goal of the work described in this paper is to develop an information retrieval methodology that incorporates the directions of linguistic investigation embedded into the ALS questionnaire into a querying tool abstracting away from the intricacies of SQL or XML query constructs. We do this setting up a methodology and data retrieval tool that is scalable and general enough to allow, firstly, evaluation of linguistics' hypotheses about regional language and dialect evolution in space and time, and, secondly, to help discover new directions of investigation.This works presents the process of knowledge discovery. Starting from conceptualization of few basic ideas, concepts have been extracted from the DBMS through an XML-based mapping and used as building blocks for further investigations. The interaction with users is very intuitive, and the results are incrementally and automatically proposed to the researchers, who may determine to use them as new knowledge to maintain for further use or discard them.","PeriodicalId":377538,"journal":{"name":"2009 International Conference on Complex, Intelligent and Software Intensive Systems","volume":"51 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2009-03-16","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"116010103","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

In addition to realistic 3D graphics rendering of written characters, our system provides a haptic channel to intuitively learn an instructor’s fine motor skills through the sense of touch. We utilize a commercially available haptic device called PHANTOM. The proposed system implements a function to record and replay the instructor’s hand motions with the written characters. Then, users can learn how to write the recorded characters with feeling the instructor’s style of handwritings via the PHANTOM device. The users can start learning at any time and iterate training without worrying about resource consumptions such as papers and ink as much as they like.","PeriodicalId":377538,"journal":{"name":"2009 International Conference on Complex, Intelligent and Software Intensive Systems","volume":"9 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2009-03-16","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"116810098","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Unfortunately, to date, nearly all these results have appeared only in theory-oriented journals and conferences, very few being presented and studied in textbooks. This aim of this paper is to give a flavor of a few of these fundamental results. To that end, it considers three problems and presents solutions proposed to solve them, emphasizing the basic concepts and techniques these solutions rely on. These problems have been selected because they address distinct facets of synchronization in presence of failures. However, because of their small screens and poor interfaces, it is inconvenient to browse Web pages designed for desktop PCs. In this paper, we propose two novel functions that virtually extend a cellular phone's screen so that users can acquire more information from the small screens than the traditional Web browsing using cellular phones. The first function presents previews of adjacent areas of the currently displayed area of a Web page so that users can understand what information is in the neighboring areas. The other presents previews of Web pages linked from the current page to help users to select an appropriate link connecting to a page containing the information of interest. As a platform for the implementation of these functions, we use cellular phones equipped with sensors to provide a user-friendly interface.","PeriodicalId":377538,"journal":{"name":"2009 International Conference on Complex, Intelligent and Software Intensive Systems","volume":"1 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2009-03-16","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"130245316","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The basis images are considered like the membership degree of the data to a particular class. A hard clustering algorithm is easily derived based on these images. This algorithm is applied on a multivariate image to perform image segmentation. The results are compared with those obtained by Fuzzy K-means algorithm and better clustering performances are found for NMF based clustering. We also show that NMF performs well when we deal with uncorrelated clusters but it cannot distinguish correlated clusters. This is an important drawback when we try to use NMF to perform data clustering.","PeriodicalId":377538,"journal":{"name":"2009 International Conference on Complex, Intelligent and Software Intensive Systems","volume":"36 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2009-03-16","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"126663939","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
