Fayrer-Jones","doi":"10.1080/20514530.2019.1673537","DOIUrl":"https://doi.org/10.1080/20514530.2019.1673537","url":null,"abstract":"ABSTRACT Although the second Marquess of Bute is often described as the “father” of modern Cardiff, this article will show that Bute was able to use his position to manipulate town affairs and exercise total political and economic control over the urban settlement. Likewise, in the neighbouring county of Monmouthshire, the fifth Duke of Beaufort used his authority in a similar manner to maintain his influence over the boroughs of Newport, Monmouth and Usk. Using newspaper articles, borough records and private correspondence, it will be shown that these aristocratic landowners were able to consolidate their authority over the urban environment during the nineteenth century. Their efforts illustrate how ethnic minorities used their identity as provincial inhabitants to cope with the context of socio-political crisis and uncertainty. It is now time to ask what impact the many Dominion soldiers had on the British towns where they were garrisoned. This article will focus on Canadian soldiers based in the Sussex town of Bexhill-on-Sea. Drawing on local newspapers, the article utilises the Maple Leaf Empire paradigm developed by Johnathan F Vance. It seeks to understand how the Canadians were perceived by the locals and whether the Canadians, in Vance’ words, “reverse-colonised” the town leading it to resemble a Canadian enclave in Britain. The article suggests that the Maple Leaf Empire typology has credence, but it is a stretch to say that it applies to Bexhill in any meaningful way. In particular, the state began intervening actively in the housing market. For the first time, Ukraine, as a part of the then Russian Empire, implemented rent controls and protection of tenants from eviction. This paper concentrates on interventions in the rental housing market of Right-Bank Ukraine during the war. It tells the story of a series of meetings in 2015 with older residents of Canvey Island in Essex who had asked for a chance to share individual experiences of ‘that night’ of flooding in 1953. A need to seize one last chance to tell the story, or tell it for the first time, is found in the recollections of other older people experiencing traumatic events. The article details the gathering of profound and painful narratives that had previously remained hidden and were fragile to loss forever. It reflects on the importance of protecting the older persons’ narrative when gathering collective memory. Despite its success in entering parliament, the Scottish Prohibitionist Party failed to make an impact in any other part of the country. This paper seeks to explain why the party’s success was limited to the city. It examines the nature of the party, and its role within wider political changes affecting Scotland in the interwar period. It will explore the extent to which its political philosophy was particularly well suited to Dundee, and the importance of the party’s organisation and charismatic leader Edwin Scrymgeour to its achievements.
