Residents’ testimonies give voice to marginalised experiences that help to establish the area’s distinctive “sense of place,” which is rooted in shared experiences of exclusion, hardship and community cohesion. Through nostalgic recollections, they also reveal a significant grassroots willingness to challenge the exclusionary practices of Cheltenham’s dominant and exclusionary Regency narrative. However, present concerns about ethnic diversity and urban decay also exposed contemporary anxieties that are indicative of the broader context of Britain in the EU referendum era. While offering a “history from below,” the paper also considers how universities operating as “anchor” institutions can help to address contemporary issues of social alienation and spatial inequality by fostering a greater appreciation of the past.","PeriodicalId":37727,"journal":{"name":"International Journal of Regional and Local History","volume":null,"pages":null},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2020-01-02","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"https://sci-hub-pdf.com/10.1080/20514530.2020.1745371","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"47242793","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

This essay focuses on two British writers whose Anglo-American sympathies and prominence within trans-Atlantic intellectual and journalism networks enabled them to shape U.S. debates over urban governance, while introducing Europeans to the tumultuous atmosphere of U.S. cities. In The American Commonwealth (1888), the Liberal scholar-politician James Bryce drew upon experiences in numerous U.S. cities to build a case for professionalised municipal governance and the acculturation of immigrants as ways of ensuring civic standards in democratising cities. In his sensational expose, If Christ Came to Chicago (1894), the social Christian journalist William T. Stead introduced Europeans to the sense among a segment of U.S. reformers that bossism resulted from capitalist injustice and that reform required social solidarity.","PeriodicalId":37727,"journal":{"name":"International Journal of Regional and Local History","volume":null,"pages":null},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2019-07-03","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"https://sci-hub-pdf.com/10.1080/20514530.2019.1680113","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"47606378","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

It sheds light on how Istanbul was degraded to a “cosmopolitan and decadent” status. The Beyoğlu-Pera district came to symbolise this decadence. Furthermore, upper-class women of the city were associated with the radical Westernisation emanating from the district. The article also scrutinises how politically active women of the city negotiated these accusations, through an analysis of their endeavours to achieve women’s suffrage. It argues that devaluing late Ottoman feminists as “morally corrupt” Istanbul women, allowed the early Republican reformers to suppress the Ottoman feminist movement and present themselves as the emancipators of Turkish women.","PeriodicalId":37727,"journal":{"name":"International Journal of Regional and Local History","volume":null,"pages":null},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2019-07-03","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"https://sci-hub-pdf.com/10.1080/20514530.2019.1673536","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"42749832","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

This article centres on the dynamics and ramifications of “the graveyard affair”. This case of corrupt power networks in late 1970s Naples was an important precursor to the corruption scandal of the 1990s. It produced convictions, leading to apparently significant changes in the local political set up in favour of politicians who, while presenting themselves as morally superior, progressed to embed legal corruption in the political equation. They pursued discriminatory policies that were later perfected by their like-minded successors. Though legal, these policies are received across society as morally and ethically corrupt, leading ordinary Southerners to feel that they are treated as second-class citizens.","PeriodicalId":37727,"journal":{"name":"International Journal of Regional and Local History","volume":null,"pages":null},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2019-07-03","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"https://sci-hub-pdf.com/10.1080/20514530.2019.1669105","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"46156137","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Recently, numerous governments have been caught up in a major bribery scandal operated by a major Brazilian building company. Bogotá, the capital of Colombia, is interesting because, in the 1990s and early 2000s, it introduced new processes aimed at preventing corruption in the allocation of public contracts. These processes clearly failed because, between 2008 and 2010, the city’s mayor offered major contracts to some extremely dubious companies. Unusually for Latin America, the guilty mayor has been jailed, along with numerous local Councillors and the contractors. This paper explains how attempts to prevent corruption failed and what steps have been taken since to prevent it happening again. Bogotá’s experience is important because it is one of the best-run cities in Latin America and, if it cannot control corruption, few cities in the region will manage to either.","PeriodicalId":37727,"journal":{"name":"International Journal of Regional and Local History","volume":null,"pages":null},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2019-07-03","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"https://sci-hub-pdf.com/10.1080/20514530.2019.1673538","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"49638524","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
