The University of Surrey has been designing and testing 3 types of thrusters for various space missions, many of which will soon be tested in orbit: The Helicon Double Layer Thruster is an RF thruster that does not use any grids and has been tested on a thrust balance at Surrey, producing thrust of 2–5 mN an Isp of 400s at 500W The Hollow Cathode Thruster is a Cathode used as an electrothermal thruster for microsatellite and has been tested to produce thrust at 2 mN, Isp of 150s at 100W The Pulsed Plasma Thruster is a micro thruster for nanosatellites, to be flown on the STRanD-1 nanosatellite mission in 2011 Micro (EP) solutions open a whole new dimension in small satellite missions, enabling new missions for space exploration, low altitude earth observation and many others. The paper will address the key micro-EP technologies and highlight some new space mission concepts which use EP technologies.","PeriodicalId":376786,"journal":{"name":"2011 2nd International Conference on Space Technology","volume":"18 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2011-11-03","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"134283866","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

EPOS (Ephemeris Program for Objects of the Solar system) is the effective math-soft application for study and ephemeris support of observations of such objects. There are the options in EPOS for calculation of the orbits of asteroids including NEAs and using the observations at the relatively short arc. Also we would like to present shortly our method of Apparent Motion Parameters (AMP) for determinations of orbits of artificial satellites and other objects from observations of short arc. The research program of the Orbital Stellar Stereoscopic Observatory (OSSO) is based on the stereoscopic method of observation for fundamental studies in the area of Celestial Mechanics, Asteroid and Comet Impact Hazard, Stellar Astronomy, Astrometry and Astrophysics with the magnitude of the target objects ranging from 8m to 25m. This project is designing for stellar-like objects observations, including the main types of the Solar system bodies.","PeriodicalId":376786,"journal":{"name":"2011 2nd International Conference on Space Technology","volume":"15 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2011-11-03","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"131765674","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Member states granted legal protection to habitats and species listed by the HabDir, and designated areas of high nature value as Natura 2000 sites. But legal designation and protection is not enough: sites need to be managed appropriately, and the impacts of environmental pressures working on them require careful monitoring. Furthermore, member states need to monitor the conservation status of habitats and species on their entire territory, and report this to the EU on a six-yearly basis. These reports then serve as input for an assessment at the European scale, aiding the EU to follow up on achievements of the HabDir, and to adapt policy where needed. As a result, this shift towards a more systematic and knowledge-driven approach to biodiversity policy in the EU led to extensive and diverse data needs, at three different scale levels (EU, member state, and protected site) and involving many stakeholders. This can no longer be met by field work alone. Remote sensing image analysis has been demonstrated to be a powerful tool to assist in fulfilling the growing data needs, yet its use in operational Natura 2000 monitoring is still limited. We argue that a successful remote sensing based service for habitat monitoring in the Natura 2000 context should be: (1) multi-scale, (2) versatile, (3) user-friendly, and (4) cost-efficient. The recently started FP7-SPACE project MS. MONINA intends to set the basis for such a service, complying with pan-European efforts for data harmonization and exchange (GMES, INSPIRE, SEIS), and relying on a strong user involvement.","PeriodicalId":376786,"journal":{"name":"2011 2nd International Conference on Space Technology","volume":"1 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2011-11-03","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"114583863","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

In dosimeters a bacterial virus, bacteriophage T7 and polycrystalline uracil thin layers were used as biological detectors. On the Earth's surface the UV radiation induce dimer formation in phage T7 and uracil detector which was evaluated by loss of viability of the phage particles and by the decrease of the characteristic optical density (OD) of uracil thin layers, respectively. Recently the increasing human space activity has increased the need to measure the biological effect of extraterrestrial solar radiation, too. Originally sample evaluation occurred on ground, while the improved, automated method presented below makes data collection more efficient and makes process dynamic observable also.","PeriodicalId":376786,"journal":{"name":"2011 2nd International Conference on Space Technology","volume":"38 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2011-11-03","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"129127556","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Indeed, these two planetary systems host extreme environments which can provide us with information on the origin and evolution and the interactions therein. The major satellites of these gas giants, like the Jovian Europa, Ganymede, Callisto, and Io, as well as the Kronian Titan and Enceladus, harbor geophysically and astrobiologically interesting conditions which sometimes resemble terrestrial procedures, albeit with a vast combination of different materials and thermodynamic parameters. Following the legacy of the Cassini/Huygens mission, the Titan Saturn Space Mission (TSSM) has been proposed and selected for further study as a large class mission consisting of an orbiter, a hot air balloon and a lake-lander and it is designed to offer a long-term full close up and in situ coverage of both Titan and Enceladus [1]. Recently selected within the NASA Discovery program is the Titan Mare Explorer (TiME) which plans to land a probe in one of Titan's lakes and explore its composition [2]. A complementary proposal for Saturnian exploration is the Titan Aerial Explorer (TAE) which includes a high-pressure Helium balloon with the capability for ground-penetrating radar, radio science and multi-spectral imaging and spectroscopy, focusing on the study of Titan's atmosphere and surface [3]. Finally, the Europa Jupiter System Mission (EJSM) is composed of an orbiter destined to study extensively the Galilean Satellite Ganymede, Jupiter's magnetosphere and the interactions among the satellites [4]. The study of these intriguing planetary bodies not only gives us the opportunity to exceed our knowledge concerning this space area, but also to experiment in planetary scale laboratories with a host of new, state-of-the-art instruments.","PeriodicalId":376786,"journal":{"name":"2011 2nd International Conference on Space Technology","volume":"1 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2011-11-03","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"129454786","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

In this study we conduct LIBS measurements under low pressure (1×10−3 mbar) to investigate the feasibility of LIBS measurement under vacuum conditions. Although the optical emission intensity decreases remarkably under low ambient pressure, our preliminary experimental results indicate that the precision of elemental abundance measurements does not decrease drastically even under 1×10−3 mbar. This paper suggests that LIBS can be used at the surface of airless bodies, such as the Moon and asteroids and also can be utilized for quantitative analysis of elemental abundance of minerals under lunar surface environment.","PeriodicalId":376786,"journal":{"name":"2011 2nd International Conference on Space Technology","volume":"11 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2011-11-03","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"121172449","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

It is based on the multi-location descriptor extraction in salient image points, which indicate image locations with temporal change, high intensity contrast, regional homogeneity and shape saliency. A novel spatiotemporal operator is used to extract the feature points, which advantageously integrates temporal change with spatial saliency. The final segmentation by scale-adaptive region growing provides borders of sea ice regions. Preliminary experimental results confirmed the reliability of the proposed segmentation method and have shown its high potential for SAR image analysis.","PeriodicalId":376786,"journal":{"name":"2011 2nd International Conference on Space Technology","volume":"103 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2011-11-03","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"115180249","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

As in the commercial sector, defence and military institutions are looking to improve their space capabilities by increasing the number of smaller, more affordable, and more capable satellites that are being put into service. The military is looking to extend these capabilities at the strategic level, the operational and tactical levels. Increasing the number of satellites inevitably increases the complexity of planning for and operating the resulting constellations. Therefore, the benefit of employing more satellites must be evaluated not only to justify the increase in complexity, but also to show the significant improvements that can be achieved. In this paper, we propose a method to evaluate the performance and role of different SBS within the context of intelligence, surveillance and reconnaissance (ISR). An example is also given to demonstrate how different numbers of SBS can improve baseline ISR capabilities.","PeriodicalId":376786,"journal":{"name":"2011 2nd International Conference on Space Technology","volume":"4 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2011-11-03","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"122917169","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
