However, traditional “event-based” PDM equivalent model may face serious robustness issues: though derived equivalent models show the good ability on reproduction of the system behaviors under recorded events where they derived from, they may not work well for other possible disturbances. In this paper, to improve the robustness of equivalent model, a novel method on dynamic equivalent modeling of power system is proposed. Based on the result of coherency identification, generators inside the equivalent system can be aggregated into different coherent subgroups and represented by multi-machine equivalent model. Key parameter selection, which can shrink the scale of identified parameters, is designed to avoid multiple solutions of the equivalent model. Moreover, a multiobjective parameter identification algorithm is developed to fully consider the PMU measurements in different system events. In addition, hybrid dynamic simulation is performed so that each equivalent sub-model can be identified separately. Finally, the efficiency of the proposed method is verified in an actual power grids in China.","PeriodicalId":376719,"journal":{"name":"2019 IEEE Industry Applications Society Annual Meeting","volume":"153 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2019-09-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"124255856","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Distance protection relay has continuously been the most common protection scheme implemented for wind farm intertie zone, however, nowadays with the enormous penetration of large-scale DFIG wind farms, these relays are no longer reliable, due to their incapability of providing accurate impedance measurement during internal and external faults, thus, causing maloperation, false tripping or delayed operation. In this study, a differential-based protective relay scheme is developed in Matlab/Simulink in order to provide reliable protection for wind farm intertie zone. Also, an aggregated model of a large-scale centralized wind farm has been designed to examine the performance of the proposed protection technique by imposing numerous internal and external faults at different locations. The results proved that differential-based protection relays (DBPR) are able to provide reliable, efficient and robust protection for the intertie zone of wind farms. Because, the differential relays provide high sensitivity, swift operation, immunity to power swings, and also inherently being a unit protection-based scheme that is extremely advantageous compared to distance relays. Moreover, unlike distance relays DBPRs do not require to cope with “underreach” and “overreach” characteristics, resulting in no false tripping during external faults.","PeriodicalId":376719,"journal":{"name":"2019 IEEE Industry Applications Society Annual Meeting","volume":"12 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2019-09-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"124283198","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Among several cooling methods, oil immersion is an efficient and cost effective one. Natural convection is the most reliable considering the lack of pumps and fans compared to others practical ways of immersion cooling. However, the heat flow is depended on several variables. To better understand natural cooling motion, the oil volume and heat transfer area are discussed for a power electronic device. Computational fluid dynamics (CFD) simulations and experimental results are used for the sake of comprehensiveness.","PeriodicalId":376719,"journal":{"name":"2019 IEEE Industry Applications Society Annual Meeting","volume":"18 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2019-09-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"121224060","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

This edge-based DFD display solves three problems in conventional DFD display. A conventional DFD display controls perceived depth by changing the luminance ratio between two overlapping images with the same shape. The first problem is the occurrence of obscure double imaging and an inappropriate luminance distribution outside the area of overlap. The second and third problems are a narrow viewing angle and restricted maximum perceived depth. The edge-based DFD display changes the perceived depth by changing the luminance of only the edge image. This solves the first problem because one image is always a clear 2D image. The second and third problems are solved by utilizing head movements and blurring of the edge image.","PeriodicalId":376719,"journal":{"name":"2019 IEEE Industry Applications Society Annual Meeting","volume":"76 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2019-09-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"126018030","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Installing energy storage systems may reduce the impact of renewable energy intermittency. However, a peculiarity in energy management can be arisen, particularly, when different energy providers manage these resources. Hence, an intelligent utilization approach should be devised to maximize the benefits of using battery energy storage, since the cost of this system is the most expensive part. This paper proposes an effective power dispatch strategy for clustered micro-grids. The developed hybrid algorithm implements optimal energy management and power sharing control using binary data. Frequency shift keying (FSK) technique has been adopted for transmitting the binary signal over the power line communication (PLC). A part of the algorithm is utilized to deal with the optimal scheduling control while the other actuates the dynamic demand response based Photovoltaic (PV) power forecasting. The performance of the proposed approach has been validated using data collected from the practical network of “Bario, Sarawak”. The presented results suggest that the implementation of the proposed strategy can improve the efficiency of the overall system, causing less operating cost and fast return.","PeriodicalId":376719,"journal":{"name":"2019 IEEE Industry Applications Society Annual Meeting","volume":"172 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2019-09-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"115448220","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

During the threading process it is important to reduce the excursions in the strip thicknesses and tensions to contribute to the stability of rolling, to avoid reducing strip tension so as to preclude the throwing of a loop of strip at the entry of a mill stand, and to successfully reduce the effects of any drop in the strip speed when the head of the strip enters a mill stand. Additionally, in most cases it is desired by the operational personnel to control the individual mill stand speeds such that, as the head of the strip moves between two adjacent stands, its speed between the two stands is held at the strip speed at the exit of the last stand just before acceleration to run speed. Moreover, it is desired that disturbances in the thickness and the resistance to deformation in the incoming strip are successfully handled by the controller. In this paper we propose a method of improved control for this process that considers all of these requirements. The effectiveness of this method is shown by simulation using data from operating mills.","PeriodicalId":376719,"journal":{"name":"2019 IEEE Industry Applications Society Annual Meeting","volume":"415 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2019-09-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"116523713","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

SCADRA achieves operation and management benefits for safety, functionality and energy optimization, by means of dynamic control and monitoring measures. A “Smart Tunnel” can be defined as a model where technical systems are designed and installed in an advanced way, by using digital components and sensors. SCADRA has been developed to offer a complete tool (human machine interface HMI) for real time monitoring of tunnel safety by tunnel operators, integrated with the innovative dynamic risk analysis. The rectifier is equipped with bi-directional switches to allow full control of the energy flow. This modulation strategy is based on a carrier signal whilst the switching frequency remains variable within a certain range. The switching frequency is dependent on the input value of the inverter output voltage. This modulation strategy allows easy set-up of the output voltage in the full range of positive and negative rectified input voltage. This also allows the direct connection of an energy storage system with a varying voltage as for example a battery system. Due to a variable number of switching pulses this modulation scheme allows a reduction in switching processes depending on the working point, while the underlying switching frequency remains constant based on the underlying PWM signal. This paper focuses on the simplification of the modulation tables and fast Fourier transformations of the different voltage stages in order to evaluate the high frequency impact of the modulation scheme.","PeriodicalId":376719,"journal":{"name":"2019 IEEE Industry Applications Society Annual Meeting","volume":"1 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2019-09-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"122635089","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

However, issues may arise during interconnection such as voltage incompatibility between the two grids i.e. MVDC-DS and AC grid. Keeping this in mind, in this paper an Improved Modular Multilevel Converter topology (I-MMC) is considered and a novel voltage balancing algorithm (VBA) is proposed. I-MMC offers several unique features like wide range of voltage boosting capability, increased number of levels in the output voltage, low switch count and enhanced THD compared to the conventional MMC. Thus, the I-MMC ensures the interconnection of the AC and DC grids and also ensures low foot print size, high power density and low infrastructure cost. I-MMC is equally effective for applications like electrical machine drive systems, High Voltage DC (HVDC) systems, and other high voltage, high power applications. I-MMC and VBA are simulated in MATLAB/Simulink environment. Representative waveforms for a wide range of loading conditions are included to validate the theoretical claims.","PeriodicalId":376719,"journal":{"name":"2019 IEEE Industry Applications Society Annual Meeting","volume":"34 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2019-09-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"114291836","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
