A control method can be used to keep direct-drive wind power system with back-to-back converters using permanent magnet generator connected to the grid during voltage sags. When the voltage sags happen, the grid-side converter of direct-drive wind power system operating at STATCOM mode, the reactive current is determined by the depth of voltage sag, then the reactive power can be rapidly provided to support the grid and help direct-drive wind power system low-voltage ride-through. All this was verified by simulation and experiment. This is illustrated that for direct-drive wind power system, the capability of low voltage ride through can be effectively improved by operating at STATCOM mode during grid voltage sags.","PeriodicalId":375971,"journal":{"name":"2009 IEEE 6th International Power Electronics and Motion Control Conference","volume":"8 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2009-05-17","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"132374016","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

It enables continuous operation and maintains SOC (state-of-charge) balancing of operating battery units even during the occurrence of a converter-cell or battery-unit failure. This enhances both system reliability and availability. A 200-V, 10-kW, 3.6-kWh laboratory system combining a three-phase cascade PWM converter with nine NiMH (Nickel-metal-hydride) battery units is designed, constructed, and tested to verify the validity and effectiveness of the proposed fault-tolerant control.","PeriodicalId":375971,"journal":{"name":"2009 IEEE 6th International Power Electronics and Motion Control Conference","volume":"1 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2009-05-17","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"130160387","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

However, with increasing energy costs also the power conversion efficiency is gaining higher and higher importance. Accordingly, while maintaining high power density, an efficiency as high as possible must be obtained. In this paper the maximum attainable efficiency and the dependency of the efficiency limit on technological parameters is determined for single-phase PFC boost rectifiers. In a first step basic PFC boost rectifier topologies are briefly compared with regard to high efficiency and a dual-boost PFC rectifier with integral common-mode filtering is selected as basis for the investigations. Next, simple approximations of the technological limits of the system performance are calculated in the efficiencypower density plane. With this, the Feasible Performance Space and the reduction in power density which has to be accepted for increasing the efficiency are clarified, and the trade-off limit curve (Pareto Front) of a multi-objective, i.e. efficiency and power density design optimization is determined. Furthermore, a comprehensive numerical efficiency optimization is carried out which identifies an efficiency limit of 99.2% for a 3.2kW system. The theoretical considerations are verified by experimental results from a laboratory prototype of the ultra-high efficiency system achieving 99.1% efficiency at a power density of 1.1kW/din3, as well as those firom an ultra-compact dual-boost PFC rectifier (95.8%, 5.5kW/dn3) and a very low switching freluency (3kHz) conventional PFC boost rectifier (96.7%, 2kW/din3). Finally, the sensitivity of the efficiency optimum with regard to various technological parameters is analyzed and an outlook on the further course of the research is given.","PeriodicalId":375971,"journal":{"name":"2009 IEEE 6th International Power Electronics and Motion Control Conference","volume":"6 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2009-05-17","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"130461365","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Enhancing compensating capability is the key technique in voltage sag compensators. In this paper, a transformer-less series voltage sag topology without energy storage capacitors is proposed first. This topology is cost-effective by eliminating the large injection transformer and energy storage capacitors that are used in conventional series injection devices. This topology can both be used in three-phase three-line and three-phase four-line systems, and can compensate symmetrical three-phase voltage sags down to 37%, or one or two phase sags down to zero if others at least one phase is rated. Secondly, this paper proposes and illustrates a new compensation control strategy which combines energy optimal control with time optimal control to enlarge the compensating time and draw a minimum amount of energy from the compensator during sags. And then, an asymptotically angle rotation method is proposed to avoid sudden phase jump of the load-side voltage. Simulation results demonstrate the good features.","PeriodicalId":375971,"journal":{"name":"2009 IEEE 6th International Power Electronics and Motion Control Conference","volume":"31 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2009-05-17","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"133897284","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The photovoltaic(PV) hybrid system was installed in the village of Darsilami in Gambia and since December 2004 functions as a stand alone system that is used to supply electricity for a rural health clinic. All the generators are coupled on the AC side using innovative inverter technology, which will allow the capacity of the power system to be easily expanded according to the future needs of the village population. This paper presents the data evaluation and performance study of the hybrid system. The monthly global radiation, system performance ratio(PR) and performance factor(PF) were analyzed and investigated. The experimental results in time domain analysis combined with frequency domain analysis reveal the stator radial vibration of SRM in voltage PWM mode is initiated not only by the phase current turn-off at the commutation position but also by phase voltage PWM during chopping. The validation and limitation of existing two stage commutation method for the reduction of vibration in SRM with voltage PWM is analyzed based on experimental results. The vibration produced by SRM with voltage PWM during chopping can be reduced using the two stage commutation method, but it is not useful for higher chopping frequency or lower natural frequency. The paper examines the impact of operating parameters and current-reflowing means on the vibration of SRM in voltage PWM mode, several particular principles for restrain the vibration of SRM are outlined based on experimental research.","PeriodicalId":375971,"journal":{"name":"2009 IEEE 6th International Power Electronics and Motion Control Conference","volume":"23 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2009-05-17","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"131480747","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

In order to reduce the transient overshoot and recovery time of the output voltage under large-signal disturbance, the paper adopts capacitive charge-balance principle, deduces a new digital control algorithm and builds the MATLAB simulation model for this control algorithm. The simulation results show that the algorithm can optimize the response of the converter and improve the dynamic performances when the load current changes suddenly. Based on TMS320F28335 digital signal processor (DSP), a prototype is developed and its output power is 60W. Through the prototype, the capacitive charge-balance control strategy is verified under large-signal disturbance.
