Home(land) can be near or far, encompass small or large spaces, be anchored in an urban area or in the open landscape. It can belong to the oldest past, be irretrievably lost, destroyed, or lie in an unknown future as a utopian place of longing. Homeland can be the real place of origin or where we live at the moment -- or the construct of a place where no one has ever been. The deepest ambivalence that emerges in critical debates about old and new literatures on homelands concerns the oscillation between the anthropological necessity, the human need for home -- and its contingency and the will to relinquish it in favor of a free, unbound way of life.","PeriodicalId":375431,"journal":{"name":"Colloquium: New Philologies","volume":"28 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2021-06-25","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"130097634","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

It points out a conflict between Mauthner’s language philosophy and his political views. In his philosophical work, he argues that language is an insufficient tool for the acquisition of knowledge. When he writes about his heritage and uses notions such as Heimat, Volk, or Vaterland, Mauthner makes claims about the formation of social communities based on a shared language and neglects a critical analysis. It appears as if he ignores the philosophical critique of language when it comes to political concepts. Thus, his political position is usually described without regard to his language philosophy, and Mauthner is conceived as a devoted German nationalist and a typical example of Jewish self-hatred. That reading can be contrasted with parts of his work – especially the late book Muttersprache und Vaterland (1920) – in which he criticizes political concepts from a language-philosophical point of view. I argue that Mauthner, read as a philosopher, cannot be typecast as a naive nationalist as he is too contradictory. I show that his writings offer both a historical example of German nationalism and a deconstruction of nationalism.","PeriodicalId":375431,"journal":{"name":"Colloquium: New Philologies","volume":"7 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2021-06-25","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"125355109","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Adorno, which so far have not received any attention in research. For both authors, the experience of the child−be it autobiographically remembered as in Adorno, or fantastically transformed as in Schulz−bears the characteristics of transcendental experience manifest in everyday life. As similar as the childhood images and scenes in Schulz and Adorno might be, their significance points in two different directions. While for Schulz, the experience of the child leads back to an original meaning of things and thus to myth, for Adorno, it points to the conditions of a new order and thus to utopia.","PeriodicalId":375431,"journal":{"name":"Colloquium: New Philologies","volume":"15 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2021-06-15","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"134618046","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Indeed, the observed development of pluralistic and shifting linguistic identities, of multilingual discourse spaces and the associated ‘crossings’ availed to language users all would appear to be confirmed and even intensified in the time period since. Above all, the latterly massively increased mediatisation of language, its visualisation and in particular the digitalisation of social communication on a global scale have led to a re-shaping of social heteroglossia/polyphony as a contextually constructed multimodal and multi-media total-communicative event in which multilingual discourse spaces flourish. At the same time, the affordances (and constraints) of the digital medium itself have led to a sociocultural re-positioning of the languages which constitute the linguistic resources employed in such exchanges, not least with regard to ‘English’ in this respect. By adducing relevant research worldwide, the paper will examine the role that anglophony as anglography now fulfils as both a codal and modal resource in online multilingual discourse.","PeriodicalId":375431,"journal":{"name":"Colloquium: New Philologies","volume":"142 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2020-12-18","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"116581185","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The flowering of knowledge in the fields of philosophy, astronomy, mathematics and astrology that started in the Islamic world later provided the impetus for the development of all branches of science in the Latin West. Hermann of Karinthia belonged to the first generation of European translators and is credited for the translation from Arabic into Latin of at least fifteen works—including Abū Maʿsar‘s Introductorium in Astronomiam, Ptolemy’s Planisphaerium and his contribution to the first translation of the Qur’an under the guidance of Peter the Venerable. By examining Hermann’s translations, this essay offers a contextualised reading of his works to see how revolutionary translation was rooted in the cultural-historical concerns of the twelfth century.","PeriodicalId":375431,"journal":{"name":"Colloquium: New Philologies","volume":"94 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2020-12-18","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"125253422","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The context of traumatisation immediately makes clear that languages are strongly connected to people’s emotional and psychological experiences. Multilingualism can help to regulate the emotional distance to stressful and traumatic experiences. At the same time, linguistic regimes, for example in the context of prestigious national languages and minority languages without prestige, have a direct impact on the psyche and self-esteem of individuals and groups. This article illustrates language ideologies in Carinthia/Koroska, places theories from psychotraumatology in the context of contemporary multilingual literature and (un)lived social multilingualism and concludes with perspectives on flight, asylum, and migration in the context of necessary sensitivity to multilingualism.","PeriodicalId":375431,"journal":{"name":"Colloquium: New Philologies","volume":"1 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2020-12-18","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"125864095","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

For many Austrian schoolchildren, the official state language German is not their first language and this fact is a challenge for many schools across the country. In this respect, schools in the federal province of Carinthia are of particular interest as Carinthia lies in the trilingual Alps-Adriatic region. Therefore, the current study investigates language diversity at Carinthian schools by asking schoolchildren which foreign languages they would be interested in learning and for what reason. Thereby, this study wants to highlight linguistic plurality in schools and plead for a greater variety of and openness for (foreign) languages taught and spoken at school.","PeriodicalId":375431,"journal":{"name":"Colloquium: New Philologies","volume":"72 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2020-12-18","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"114953770","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Both languages function as donor languages for a mixed code called Surzhyk. This code may exist in two variants, reflecting the history of the Ukraine. \u0000“Prototype Surzhyk” stems from the times of Russian political dominance: Over almost two centuries people adapted themselves to a Russian-speaking environment. This “old” Surzhyk has developed in a way resembling so called ‘dialect levelling’ on the basis of Ukrainian. Though still quite variable, a certain stabilisation of Old Surzhyk is observed, since adults have used it among themselves and with their children in informal communication over several generations. The second variant, here called “Neo-Surzhyk”, is of younger origin. It evolved with people who used to practise mainly Russian, but -- due to the language politics of the Ukraine after 1990 -- had at least partially to turn to Ukrainian. Neo-Surzhyk thus has either a Russian base or at least a higher Russian share. \u0000The central research question is whether there is a clear differentiation between two mixed codes based on the same two closely related donor languages? Or is there a gradual transition between groups of speakers with different sociodemographic backgrounds? \u0000The methodological approach consists in corpus linguistic description, combined with analytical methods of quantitative variationist sociolinguistics, correlated with sociodemographic data. My paper examines his work from a productional aesthetics point of view within a multilingual literary practice, using the example of the novel Bostjanov let (Bostjans Flug). For the first time, his literary estate, acquired by the Robert-Musil-Institute for Literary Research / Archives of Carinthian literature, is made accessible. It consists of all phases of the genetic history of his literary works, through the stages of his life cycle (notes, sketches, drawings, pencil shavings, manuscripts). Previous studies investigating the writing process lack the aspect of literary multilingualism. From the perspective of the (multilingual) writing process, the literature of Florjan Lipus thus presents itself in a new light. Writing is not just the act of writing itself but consists of different moments. It is also a cultural process with political and multilingual implications. Florjan Lipus has received numerous prestigious awards (among them in 2018 the Grand Austrian State Prize for Literature) and his work was translated into various languages. My article, based on the research for my dissertation, addresses the question of how Lipus’ writing process and his own relation to his work present itself in his literary estate. My article expands the range of the “gesture of literary writing” (Gresillon) by specifically applying it to the crucial social, political and historical tensions of the literary practice of Carinthian Slovenes. I argue that understanding the writing process is crucial to understanding the specific multilingual poetics of an author.","PeriodicalId":375431,"journal":{"name":"Colloquium: New Philologies","volume":"34 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2020-12-18","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"122884520","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
