The subjects surveyed included pupils between ages 9 and 18 with at least one foreign (language-speaking) parent. Each pupil compiled a questionnaire aimed at collecting social and personal data as well as data about their linguistic repertories, uses and behaviours and those of their parents, relatives, friends and other interlocutors, both in Italy and (for those born abroad) in their country of origin. By analysing their answers, it was possible to attest the (at least) bilingual dimension of these subjects’ daily lives, especially within the family context, with friends and, above all, at school. The results show that these subjects have multiple and more or less ample competences at their disposal, as well as a marked sensitivity toward plurilingualism.","PeriodicalId":375431,"journal":{"name":"Colloquium: New Philologies","volume":"8 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2022-12-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"121674251","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Apart from Croatian and Italian, other Romance and Slavic varieties are spoken and the linguistic situation has therefore been described as that of a double diglossia or imperfect polyglossia (Milani Kruljac 1990). Research on the linguistic landscape in officially bilingual territories, such as the Istrian Region, can be particularly useful to study the relationship of language power and prestige, the implementation of language policies and the degree of openness of different languages and cultures (see Backhaus, 2007). In this paper, we will give a brief state of the art on the study of the linguistic landscape (LL) in Croatia, especially in the officially bilingual city of Pula/Pola and give some new data on the LL of the city. Following Ben-Rafael et al. (2006)’s definition both top-down and bottom-up signs were considered in order to document the variety of the linguistic repertoire. All the signs were coded by adopting the analytical coding categories suggested by Backhaus (2007). The results shed light both on the implementation of language policies and on the degree of multilingualism in the city.","PeriodicalId":375431,"journal":{"name":"Colloquium: New Philologies","volume":"33 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2022-12-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"131814551","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The sociolinguistic reference data were extracted from my doctoral thesis (Campanale 2006a) and are based on quantitative analysis (196 completed questionnaires) and a qualitative one with two types of interviews “structured with a fixed response” and “structured with a free response”. Despite the 1999 Law on the Protection of Minorities, very few measures have so far been put in place to improve the local linguistic heritage. However, there has been a renewed interest in the linguistic policies of these territories following the passing of the new Statute of Veneto in 2012, as well as the regional Laws in 2007, 2014, 2019 and 2021. This is above all reflected in schools with some innovative experiments of Ladin using the CLIL method.","PeriodicalId":375431,"journal":{"name":"Colloquium: New Philologies","volume":"72 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2022-12-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"128756720","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Power relationships are strictly mediated through language competencies at both the community (i.e., with regard to the institutional distribution of resources) and individual levels (i.e., with regard to how individuals can get access to them) in the province of Bolzano/Bozen. As for our dataset, several participants declare having at least low competencies in both Italian and German, while a few of them also understand a local Austro-Bavarian dialect. Specifically, four types of stories are identified in the interviewees’ language biographies. These are labeled as narratives of i) exclusion, ii) assimilation, iii) empowerment, and iv) emancipation. In the first two types of stories, narrators mainly reproduce master narratives concerning newcomers’ language learning habits and outcomes in South Tyrol. By contrast, narratives of empowerment and emancipation are ‘contesting’ strategies (e.g., Fairclough 1989/2001; Pennycook 2001). However, they differ in terms of their underlying conception of power – i.e., as a property vs. as emerging from social relations – and in terms of the linguistic and textual strategies employed by tellers to convey their moral position (also: moral agency) and align their interlocutors to it.","PeriodicalId":375431,"journal":{"name":"Colloquium: New Philologies","volume":"19 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2022-11-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"131953800","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

With the help of the concept desiring-machines by Deleuze and Guattari, in this paper I want to map the polyphonic literature by James Joyce and Milan Rakovac. The concept of heteroglossia should help to reveal possibilities of description that go beyond normative attributions. Desiring machines produce nomadic positions that create a multitude of possibilities, potentially infinite possibilities. This is accompanied by schizo-analysis, which connects different subject positions and eludes the Oedipal capitalist definition of the subject. Subjects are divided by the incisions of desiring machines and are multiplied by them. The selection of subject positions multiplies and potentially reaches infinite possibilities.","PeriodicalId":375431,"journal":{"name":"Colloquium: New Philologies","volume":"240 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2022-11-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"124616656","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The author refers to the Italian novel as a rewriting and not a translation claiming to “Arabize Italian and Italianize Arabic”. However, as I will prove in this paper, Lakhous’s rewriting shows an asymmetrical relationship between the two languages since Italian is more prevalent in both versions at different levels. Consequently, the two texts constitute two different steps of the same creative process that begun in 2001 and ended in 2006 when Lakhous published the ultimate and perfected version of the text in Italian.","PeriodicalId":375431,"journal":{"name":"Colloquium: New Philologies","volume":"7 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2022-11-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"122941377","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
