The cell diameter is 7.6–19.0 (av. 12.4) µm. P. caudata has scales of two distinct types. Plate scales (2.08–3.48 (av. 2.6) × 1.07–1.65 (av. 1.3) µm) are flat, oval, with parallel edges and axial thickening. Spine scales (2.47–7.1 (av. 4.6) µm) with a funnel-shaped base, which is indistinctly continuous with a shaft. The shaft demonstrates gradual levels of reduction; in some scales it is completely absent. The surface of the spine scales is smooth, ornamented with few slits at the base of the shaft and on the surface of the funnel and has a thin marginal border. The cells are floating or attached to the substratum, sometimes in aggregates of 2–3 cells. The species diversity of Pterocystis spp. with leaf-shaped and scoop-shaped spine scales is discussed.","PeriodicalId":37502,"journal":{"name":"Protistology","volume":"1 1","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2023-01-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"67895421","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The unicellular green alga Dunaliella salina is a special case, as its cells have two NRs. This makes D. salina attractive to study the mechanisms underlying the nitrate assimilation in photosynthetic unicellular organisms. Here we characterize the expression of the gene encoding the second NR, named as DsaNIA1 . Low levels of mRNA for DsaNIA1 are present in ammonia-grown cells. DsaNIA1 is a nitrate-and nitrite-inducible gene. Using spectrofluorometric assays with NO-sensitive fluorescence dye, we demonstrate nitrite-dependent NO synthesis by D. salina cells. Moreover, we found that the transcription of DsaNIA1 , but not DsaNIA2 , is under the inducing influence of NO-dependent pathway. Together, our data argue for the two differently regulated NR isoforms in D. salina .","PeriodicalId":37502,"journal":{"name":"Protistology","volume":"1 1","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2023-01-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"67895516","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
