The comparison between materials from literature and own investigations allowed the author to conclude that F. vernalis Ehrenberg, 1833 cannot to be a valid species and assume that it is rather a cluster of closely related freshwater ciliates with one contractile vacuole and a stable ability to accommodate green algae as the cytoplasmic symbionts. “F. vernalis”, as described by Bullington (1939), was shown to have little in common with the original description by Ehrenberg and most likely is a brackishwater ciliate similar to F. fusca. F. oculiaris described by the same author (Bullington, 1939) is obviously F. fusca, and the name “F. oculiaris” should be considered as a younger synonym of the latter. Thus, redescription of F. oculiaris (Pan et al., 2013b) should be treated just as a morphological study of the local Chinese population of F. fusca. The redescription of F. canadensis from brackish waters by the same authors can be considered as a description of a new species that has little in common with the original description of this freshwater ciliate (Roque and Puytorac, 1972). Recent phylogenetical reconstructions indicate the necessity to split Frontonia into several genera.","PeriodicalId":37502,"journal":{"name":"Protistology","volume":"1 1","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2019-01-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"67885762","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

During ecdysis, a cell loses the plasmalemma, outer amphiesmal vesicle membrane and, in armored species, thecal plates, becomes immotile, and then amphiesma regeneration occurs. Here we report the results of our study of cell covering rearrangement during ecdysis in the naked dinoflagellate species Amphidinium carterae Hulburt 1957. Ecdysis was induced by mechanical treatment (centrifugation). The changes in cell organization at the ultrastructural level were examined using transmission electron microscopy methods. Shedding of the plasma membrane and the outer amphiesmal vesicle membranes, fusion of the inner amphiesmal vesicle membranes were observed. The amorphous cytoplasm zone, which underlies inner amphiesmal vesicle membranes in motile cells, retains under the new plasma membrane in ecdysed cells. We showed accumulation of small vesicles and flattened tubules that apparently begin fusion to form juvenile amphiesmal vesicles in this zone. The absence of pellicle in Amphidinium dinoflagellates was suggested.","PeriodicalId":37502,"journal":{"name":"Protistology","volume":"1 1","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2019-01-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"67886849","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

They are a key component of soil ecosystems and are actively involved in the biogenic cycles of carbon, nitrogen, phosphorus, silica and calcium. They play an important role in regulating the abundance of microorganisms in soils. Since late 19th century, a development of the micropaleontological method in paleoecology was known as a rhizopod analysis (Beyens and Bobrov, 2016). The shell amoebae from the genus Planhoogenraadia in the eastern part of Eurasia, namely in the Far East, were first found in 2001 (Bobrov, 2001). Later they were also found in Thailand (Todorov and Golemansky, 2014). The genus Planhoogenraadia inhabits the forest soils. The genus belongs to the Gondwana-tropic group of shell amoebae and has a limited geographical distribution (Bonnet, 1984; Bonnet and Gomez-Sanchez, 1984). This is one of the most interesting genera in protozoology in view of biogeography (Foissner, 2006; Smith et al., 2018). The soil fauna of shell amoebas of the subtropics and tropics is still poorly studied (Qin et al., 2011; Bobrov et al., 2015). This study was conducted in a mountain subtropical forest near the city of Wuhan, Hubei Province, Central China.","PeriodicalId":37502,"journal":{"name":"Protistology","volume":"1 1","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2019-01-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"67887064","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Although the upper heat shock temperature limits for the two strains were different (40–41 °C for “green”, and 37–38 °C for “white” cells), the responses to high temperature were similar. The delay in the completion of cell cycle depended on the cell cycle stage at which heat shock was given. Cells exposed to heat shocks at G1 stage or at the late dividing stage and returned back to 22 °C did not show any noticeable cell cycle lengthening. The most prominent effect was observed when the cells were heat-shock treated at the early dividing stage. In this case, heat shock resulted in up to 4 h delay of the cell cycle completion. It was found that in all experiments, when heat shock was given at different stages of division, the cell cycle duration of the progeny cells was significantly longer (42–50 h) than that of the control cells (21–25 h).","PeriodicalId":37502,"journal":{"name":"Protistology","volume":"1 1","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2019-01-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"67888051","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Fifty-seven ciliate species belonging to 21 families were revealed. A correlation has been established between the planktonic ciliates’ species richness and the organic pollution degree at the coastal zone. The status of some ciliate species as indicators of varying saprobity was clarified. The most precise indication using ciliates was obtained for alpha-meso and alpha-polysaprobic zones. We explain this fact by the more accurate data on ciliates indicators of more polluted zones and the erroneous certification of many ciliate species, currently considered as indicators of beta-alpha-mesosaprobic zone.","PeriodicalId":37502,"journal":{"name":"Protistology","volume":"1 1","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1900-01-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"67887652","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
