However, the way it has been performed traditionally poses motivational and collaboration challenges, thus having limited engagement from students. There is a renewed interest in enhancing learning with physical computing, owing to its positive impact on motivation and enhanced opportunities for collaboration and creativity. Recognizing this, a BBC-led consortium developed a portable and low-cost programmable device, the micro:bit. In this study, we report the impressions of students and teachers when they encountered it in the classroom for the first time. The device was presented to a group of 36 students and 5 teachers from 4 countries, and then after the brief tutorial, all of them familiarized with it by programming it themselves. We evaluate the ease of use and tangibility of the device, and analyze student quality of experience, that validate the aforementioned benefits of this approach for learning to code.","PeriodicalId":373842,"journal":{"name":"2018 17th International Conference on Information Technology Based Higher Education and Training (ITHET)","volume":"35 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2018-04-26","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"123082874","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

It represents what and how a course will be conducted. Some authors have researched regarding the components for writing a good syllabus. However, there is not a standard format universally accepted by all educators. Even inside the same university, there are syllabuses written in different type of files like PDF, DOC, HTML, for instance. These kind of files are easily readable by humans but it is not the same by machines. On the other hand, ontologies are technologies of knowledge representation that allow setting information understandable for both humans and machines. In this paper, we present a literature review regarding the use of ontologies for syllabus representation. The objective of this paper is to know the use of ontologies to represent a syllabus semantically and to determine their score according to the five-stars of Linked Data vocabulary use scale. Our results show that some researchers have used ontologies for many purposes, widely concerning with learning objectives. Nevertheless, the ontologies created by the authors do not fulfill with the five-stars rating and do not have all components of a well-suited syllabus.","PeriodicalId":373842,"journal":{"name":"2018 17th International Conference on Information Technology Based Higher Education and Training (ITHET)","volume":"61 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2018-04-26","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"115210190","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The exposure to limitless information and experiences has completely modified their view of the world in ways unfamiliar to other generations. Therefore educators must adapt the content and teaching/lecturing methods according to their expectations. One way of enhancing the learning experience is to be aware of the current attitudes and behaviors of today’s students and to rely more and more on the technological improvements in educational strategies. Goal oriented and intellectually inquisitive students prefer experimental activities, which are structured, involve teamwork and virtual collaboration instead of simple narrations and monologues. In addition, students are sometimes involved in part time or even full time jobs that significantly reduce their time of preparation for educational activities. The paper presents an innovative cloud computing approach and its implementation within HyperTraining, a collaborative learning framework for career development and internship programmes. It also illustrates how such a system increases the performance in special education and training programmes, as well as the manner the private companies can help universities and colleges in the education act. Nevertheless, it highlights the importance of blended learning concepts and tools used for knowledge building in the individual study process or technical skills and competences developed within practice activities during special educational processes such as laboratories, projects, even internship programmes, continuing the work started in [1], [2].","PeriodicalId":373842,"journal":{"name":"2018 17th International Conference on Information Technology Based Higher Education and Training (ITHET)","volume":"7 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2018-04-26","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"126943832","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The proposed architecture, named e-RecRep, aims to allow the recommendation of LOs in an e-learning environment, where the reputation of users who recommend these LOs is considered. With the adoption of e-RecRep, the student receives suggestions - from the system and from other users - of learning objects that relate to the studied content, encouraging the student to complement his learning. Preliminary results allow us to conclude that suggestions from a person who presents a good reputation to a group make the recommended information more relevant, improving not only the credibility of the information but also its robustness, diversity and surprise (serendipity). The article will be structured as follows. The main concepts and related work will be presented initially. The RecRep architecture and its main features are then presented as well as the description of their behavior through real usage scenarios. Finally the results of the first experiments involving its use and the possibilities of continuity of the work are discussed.","PeriodicalId":373842,"journal":{"name":"2018 17th International Conference on Information Technology Based Higher Education and Training (ITHET)","volume":"195 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2018-04-26","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"125306323","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

SDN as a technology provides a high level of abstraction by decoupling the control plane from the data plane giving the ability to network administrators and operators to “program” the network in much the same way as ordinary computer programmers write their programs in high level language such as Python, PHP, C++, C# and other. All of the network programming is carried out onto a centralized computer called a SDN controller, which connects to the data plane (hardware devices) via open standard protocols such as OpenFlow. The ever growing user demands regarding the networks and its underlying structure plays a key role in the adoption of SDN technology. Even though SDN is in its early days of development it has undergone a lot of changes during the past few years. This leads us to believe that this technology is going to be implemented into real world networks in the near future. That’s why it is important to start educating our students to be able to build, manage, maintain and control those types of networks [2].","PeriodicalId":373842,"journal":{"name":"2018 17th International Conference on Information Technology Based Higher Education and Training (ITHET)","volume":"32 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2018-04-26","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"129400349","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The key point is visualizing processes and the input and output factors in the virtual social learning scenario using a cybernetic model. First, a model was created focusing on learning community managers, the students and their activities and interactions. This representation was converted to a cybernetic model. Key elements of this cybernetic model are the transformation unit and the observer unit, which give entry points for a possible automation. The automation of the transformation unit would be the creation of a decision support system.","PeriodicalId":373842,"journal":{"name":"2018 17th International Conference on Information Technology Based Higher Education and Training (ITHET)","volume":"24 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2018-04-26","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"123181432","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

It helps in facilitating an effective and collaborative learning environment among students. It offers students a platform to learn from each other by receiving and giving critical feedback. A lot of researches have focused on the use of peer assessment in the grading of individual contributions of students in group works but very few studies have investigated the use of group peer assessment. This paper explores the effectiveness of intergroup peer assessment using a case study of the MSc Engineering Management programme at York (UK). An intergroup peer assessment element was introduced for the academic year 201819 in one of the modules called ‘Enterprise’. 11 groups participated in the grading of other groups. Several benefits associated with intergroup peer assessment are discussed which includes reduction in biased grades, multiple perspectives and views within a team, improvement in team coordination and dynamics and a better understanding of academic grades and feedback process. The findings also highlight some limitations with this method of peer assessment such as conflicts among members, lack of engagement, management of contradictory views, time management and varying level of criticality and understanding of grading parameters. Despite these limitations, intergroup peer assessment does have potential in facilitating active learning and critical thinking among students. Its use should be encouraged perhaps in formative exercises in order to build and strengthen team relations and coordination among students.","PeriodicalId":373842,"journal":{"name":"2018 17th International Conference on Information Technology Based Higher Education and Training (ITHET)","volume":"3 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2018-04-26","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"129327918","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
