I. Konrad, N. A. Nevsky, A. A. Kholodovich) is a remarkable milestone in development of the Far East ideographic languages’ lexicography in our country. The absence of published dictionaries as visible outcome of the lexicographical works poses the main difficulty for historians of science in reconstruction of the period and the treatment of the subject. Fund No. 152 of the Archive of Orientalists of the Institute of Oriental Manuscripts of the Russian Academy of Sciences contains a massif of documents, together with other materials illustrating the project in detail, but not offering coherent interpretation in the absence of extra sources, that is lexicographically informative ones, in order to close the gap of the reliable source material. Yet until recently, the historiography of the subject was lacking. The gap could be closed by a unique lexicographical monument discovered in the Institute of Oriental Studies. It should be a copy of the first galley proof portion of the “Great Japanese-Russian Character Dictionary”. The source analysis of the monument and its criticism in the full context of relevant documentary evidence known up to date along with more meaningful interpretation of the data allow for precise qualification of a little-studied decade-long dictionary project in the history of Oriental lexicography and prewar Japan studies in our country. It may be determined that for the first generations of Soviet scholars of Japan the unpublished dictionary appeared to be a kind of school forging a vital link between the pre-Revolution and post-war Soviet lexicography of Japanese language: from D. M. Pozdneyev to N. A. Syromyatnikov.","PeriodicalId":373435,"journal":{"name":"Journal of the Institute of Oriental Studies RAS","volume":"108 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1900-01-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"115407656","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The embassy of Nikolai Petrovich Rezanov to Japan ended in failure and gave rise to new sad events in Russian-Japanese relations. Among such events are the Khvostov incident (also known as the Rezanov-Davydov-Khvostov incident), when some Japanese villages and crafts on Sakhalin were robbed and burned, and the Golovnin incident, when the Russian navigator Vasily Mikhailovich Golovnin was captured by the Japanese and held in captivity for two years. The author made an attempt to find out the role of the personality of the envoy in all the listed events. An analysis of historiography has shown that researchers have repeatedly turned to the results of Rezanov’s embassy and to the analysis of his personality, coming to opposite conclusions about the envoy’s absolute guilt or complete innocence in the failure of the mission. The involvement of a wide range of sources, as well as the use of the induction method, allowed the author to come to new conclusions: the failure was not in one, but in a complex of reasons. Along with such reasons as poorly selected goods and the prejudiced attitude of the Japanese of that time towards the Russian people, the actions of Nikolai Petrovich influenced the failure of the mission. However, the main role was played by the isolation policy of the Japanese state, which, having begun in the middle of the 17th century, was firmly entrenched in Japanese society. As for the role of the envoy in relations with Japan, it is greatest in the sad story of the robbery of Japanese villages, which had a negative impact on relations with Japan.","PeriodicalId":373435,"journal":{"name":"Journal of the Institute of Oriental Studies RAS","volume":"71 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1900-01-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"127166793","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The choice to conquer or not to conquer Taiwan is discussed from the perspective of the Bargaining Model of War that based on an assessment of the benefits costs ratio. The evaluation of the decision cost definitely depends on the perception of the rival’s actions and other external and internal variables. Each side evaluates more optimistic its own benefit-cost ratio and tries to shift the other side coast of war perception in order to change the decision to fight. The author comes to the conclusion that, on the one hand, the benefits-costs ratio is not favorable for Chinese authorities and they are not going to occupy Taiwan in current moment. But, on the other hand, China uses the threat to Taiwan as a lever in bargaining or deterring the United States. Also, the threat is used by Beijing for a pessimistic impact to the benefits-costs assessment in the event of Taiwan’s refusal to reunite and follow «Consensus 1992».","PeriodicalId":373435,"journal":{"name":"Journal of the Institute of Oriental Studies RAS","volume":"43 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1900-01-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"132998252","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The statue was acquired by Vladimir S. Golenischev and belongs to the collection of the Pushkin State Museum of Fine Arts in Moscow. The paper provides the first separate publication of this object. The statue belongs to the well-defined group of “striding draped male figures” dated to the period of 1 st century B.C. to the 1 st century A.D. Currently more than 130 monuments of such a type are known. During the research several specifications were developed for a more detailed comprehending of this monument. Special attention was paid to the contextualizing the statue and the analysis of its rare headdress, which attracted previously little attention. The standing male statues with lotus-bud diadems present a very unusual and interesting phenomenon. These monuments depicted the high dignitaries of Ptolemaic administration ( strategos , nomarchs , and high priests), all belonging to Egyptian origin (judging from prosopography). The lotus-bud diadem may have serve as the token of temple’s gratitude to the dignitaries for their benefits or may have been a special mark of distinction given by the Ptolemies. In broad sense this diadem could be compared with the so-called “crown of justification” elevating its owner to the divine status after death. This kind of statues could have been placed in the open spaces in temples or at the city’s agora.","PeriodicalId":373435,"journal":{"name":"Journal of the Institute of Oriental Studies RAS","volume":"1 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1900-01-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"125354227","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
