Data collection was done by use 112 questionnaires administered on line. The respondents were first year students attending online courses in Kenyan University. Results showed majority of the respondents (41%) used 8-seater vehicle to travel. As for the distance travelled, majority of the respondents (37.3%) covered less than 25 km to reach their home County Headquarters. Possibility of infection in 8-seater and 32-seater vehicle was concentrated in level 3 while that for 14-seater was concentrated in Level 4. For 45-seater and 63-seater vehicles the possibility of infection was in level 2. A model efficiency of 84.8% was found indicating that the model is good. The results of this study provided information on behaviour of public transport sector in Kenya. © 2022, Paulus Editora. Travel behavior during the pandemic has not been investigated adequately, specifically in developing countries. A sound understanding of travel-mode choice determinants is needed to design interventions to slow down and prevent the spread of the COVID-19 disease. This study explores travel-mode choice determinants for three key destinations, the workplace, market, and hospital, in Islamabad, Pakistan, during the COVID-19 disease outbreak. This study used a primary dataset of 163 observations and applied the multinomial logit (MNL) regression to analyze it. The survey results highlighted that the proportion of public transport mode was marginal for the three key destinations because public transport was closed during the lockdown, except for the metro bus. The streamlined model estimation results implied that the familysize factor had no relationship with the travel-mode choice. Males were most likely to travel to the workplace and market by 2&3 wheelers and least likely to travel by car. Females, unemployed persons, and students are likely to stay at home. Married people were more likely than single people to travel to the workplace and hospital by car. Self-employed people and state officials/public servants were most likely to go to the market by car. People living in towns/rural areas and cities were likely to travel by motorcycle/rickshaw and car, respectively. People living farther than 5 km from the workplace were most likely to travel by car, followed by motorcycle. This study is important for designing strategies to curb the pandemic with sustainable mobility during the lockdown. © 2021, Paulus Editora. At this time, the worldwide outbreak has passed its peak, while the greatest number of cases has been in the USA, Brazil, and India. Measures and policies for controlling the outbreak have been developed by authorities to protect the population of each country, and forecasting the number of infectious people is an important factor for developing them. This research was conducted to identify a suitable forecasting model for estimating the cumulative daily number of infectious people worldwide. Sample countries with severe outbreaks were selected from each continent. Herein, forecasting models based on logistic, Richards, and Gompertz growth curves are derived and their suitability for forecasting the COVID-19 rates in each sample country and worldwide are analyzed. Moreover, estimating the growth curve parameters is based on the least-squares method. The results show that the Gompert growth curve is the most suitable for estimating the cumulative number of infectious people worldwide. © 2021, Paulus Editora. The aim was to evaluate the effectiveness of the maintenance practices in a power generating plant using an availability ratio method. The plant was placed under study for a period of six months. The operation records were obtained from which the availability ratio was obtained. Questionnaires were also distributed to the 21 staff members in the unit and oral interviews were conducted to ascertain the maintenance strategy practiced by the unit. The study revealed that the unit has an availability of 61%, which is low compared to the standard availability ratio of power generating plants (99.9%). The maintenance practices of the unit were determined ineffective. This ineffectiveness was attributed to poor documentation, low-skilled manpower, lack of a spare parts stock, and deficient operating maintenance strategy, as well as poor maintenance funding and management policy. The study recommended autonomy of the maintenance unit, a better inventory system for work materials and spare parts, practice of a predictive or condition monitoring maintenance strategy, training and retraining of the workforce and acquisition of relevant equipment, such as vehicles and computers, as measures that will, in part, improve the effectiveness of maintenance of the plant. The recommendations of this study can be applied to the power sector in Nigeria, which is considered by many to be grossly ineffective.","PeriodicalId":37310,"journal":{"name":"Engineering and Applied Science Research","volume":"47 1","pages":"170-174"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2020-06-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"43415608","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
