A treatment and control methodology was conducted at a total of seven intersections in Sharjah and Abu Dhabi. The pedestrian perception was gauged using a user preference survey that was distributed at the study intersections and online. Pedestrians are seen to have an overall positive perception of countdown timers. Pedestrian behavior was assessed via video recording. Video data was collected for a fixed duration in the morning and mid-day during a weekday. Various parameters were studied to measure pedestrian compliance and safety namelyproportion of violations, pedestrian-vehicle conflicts, successful crossings and pedestrians who ran out of time. Statistical analysis was carried out to analyze if the pedestrian proportion in a particular performance measure varied in a statistically significant manner between the two cases (with countdown timers and without countdown timers). A significant reduction in pedestrian noncompliance and a significant increase in the number of successful pedestrian crossings were observed. Overall, results show that pedestrian countdown timers are efficient in enhancing pedestrian safety and in aiding them to make better-informed decisions while crossing. However, to fully benefit from countdown timers, factors such as time allotted for the green and red phase as well as its location need to be considered. ","PeriodicalId":372752,"journal":{"name":"Journal of Traffic and Logistics Engineering","volume":"13 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2017-12-15","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"131030648","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The study adopted the use of a questionnaire-based survey with traffic safety experts in Abu Dhabi Emirate. The views of more than a hundred respondents were collected on areas such as the status of existing traffic safety technologies in Abu Dhabi’s highway network, the impact of traffic safety technologies on enforcement, existing highway design practices, effects of driver education on safety and the impact of safety technologies on the efficiency of emergency responses. Factor analysis and Freidman tests were employed for the interrogation of the data in order to extract findings from the views of different experts on the aforementioned areas. The analysis showed that the deployment of traffic safety technologies has a positive impact on the efficiency of enforcement practices and improvements on traffic safety, and on enhancing operators’ efficiency and capability in taking appropriate and prompt action in situations calling for emergency responses. Moreover, speed cameras and VMS deployment are highly favoured in addressing engineering design shortfalls. Also, training and awareness enhance the efficiency and effectiveness of traffic safety technologies.","PeriodicalId":372752,"journal":{"name":"Journal of Traffic and Logistics Engineering","volume":"69 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2017-06-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"133095879","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Speed of vehicles is considered as one of the major causes of danger for pedestrians crossing the street (making cross movements). Therefore, it is of almost importance to devise suitable solutions for reducing speed of vehicles. One of these solutions is Pedestrian Refuge Islands (PRI). With regard to fluctuations in pedestrian and vehicle traffic volume in traffic hours, there are different variations in collisions between vehicle and pedestrian. In this article the effect of constructed PRI in Tehran on speed of vehicles and consequently their effects on probability fluctuations of fatal accidents are determined. Speed of vehicles in two phases of before and after arriving to the PRI is assessed. Additionally, speed of vehicles in non-observed volumes of vehicle and pedestrian are calculated using Aimsun.v6 simulation software. Paired T-test is applied to compare average speed of vehicles before and after the PRI. The results revealed that except for traffic volumes of 30004000veh/hand 400-600 ped/h in other volumes reduction of average speed of vehicles as a result of PRI is significant. According to the results, it is recommended that PRI should be installed in midblock where traffic volume of vehicles in each lane is less than 750 veh/h. ","PeriodicalId":372752,"journal":{"name":"Journal of Traffic and Logistics Engineering","volume":"126 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2016-08-14","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"131648729","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The criticality assessment of network components is reviewed and analyzed concerning its sensitivity in demand and supply variations. It is proposed that when highlighting the most critical component(s) of a network under evacuation conditions, one could either intervene to the component(s) itself, assuring the preservation of its operation and enhancement of functionality or intervene to alternative component(s) of the network that could offer attractive alternatives to the critical one. The two intervention approaches are presented in detail and evaluated in terms of minimizing travel times of evacuees in the Sioux Falls test network. ","PeriodicalId":372752,"journal":{"name":"Journal of Traffic and Logistics Engineering","volume":"10 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1900-01-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"115101012","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The South Gujarat region in India have majority of top soil as black cotton soil. The black cotton soil has characteristics of shrinking on drying and heaving on wetting. This soil being expansive creates several types of damages to pavement structures, and in some cases the pavement may even become unserviceable. The normal climate condition of study area shows short wet and long dry period which aggravate the problem of swelling and shrinkage. The IRC: 37 – 2001, Annexure – 4 suggest 0.6 to 1.0 m thick non-cohesive soil cushion on the expansive soil for road construction which led to higher cost for road construction. Also for new urban areas it is difficult to raise the embankment or to excavate the subgrade upto such a depth due to existing structures and under laying service lines. To provide economical solution along with feasible application Geotextile used as reinforcement material for flexible pavement. It is provided below the pavement components to act against the heaving of the swelling soil at the same time it helps as drainage layer also. Field study is undertaken to observe the effect of Geotextile in flexible pavement performance and 2 specific boundary conditions are created for observations. Observations shows about 50 % reduction in shrinkage effect for paved road reinforced with Geotextile subjected to drying and wetting cycles. ","PeriodicalId":372752,"journal":{"name":"Journal of Traffic and Logistics Engineering","volume":"47 1 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1900-01-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"122150068","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

In order to provide potential countermeasures to the red light running problem, these types of crashes need to be studied accurately. Some researchers use crash databases to obtain red light running crash information through filtering crashes reported as \"disregarded traffic signal\" without going through the actual crash reports. The purpose of this paper was to analyze the actual long form crash reports for a sample of 1,600 crashes and compare them with the data obtained from the database to investigate if errors often occur in how information on red light running crashes are. The analysis of the random sample showed that the percentage of crashes related to red light running reported in the database was 3.1% compared to 5.8% from the actual crash reports. The difference was mainly due to the way of filling out the crash report by the law enforcement personnel. Although, it is always hard to draw solid conclusions about the attributing cause of a collision, it is necessary to standardize the format and coding process for the crash reports and to train the law enforcement personnel to help accurately identify the real cause of the crash. Finally, the findings presented in this research imply that the red light running crashes are being underreported, and that long form crash reports should be considered as part of any future analysis. ","PeriodicalId":372752,"journal":{"name":"Journal of Traffic and Logistics Engineering","volume":"2 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1900-01-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"122202290","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
