It is shown that air and partial-core transformers can be adapted to multimicrosecond, direct-drive applications where output voltages up to at least 1 MV are required. To achieve adequate coupling, these transformers must operate within winding stresses between 0.5 and 1 MV/cm. Experiments have shown that the switching plasma fully permeates the interelectrode gap in the short interval following triggering but prior to the high current conduction phase, so that electrode heating is significantly reduced in a comparison to an otherwise similar vacuum switch. The switch plasma dissipated from the gap region in only a few microseconds, much faster than in the vacuum gap. A fast rate of current rise, with a time constant near 10 ns, has been obtained at 45 kV in a 50 Omega system. Modifications required to improve the efficiency and operation of the original design are described. Added protection to the modulator was required, and several changes were made to improve its reliability, simplicity, and cost. The MTI (moving target indicator) performance of the solid-state modulator (SSM) versus the switch-tube modulator (STM) is evaluated in regard to intrapulse noise and clutter attenuation. The objective of these investigations is to develop a high-voltage, repetition-rated pulse line for applications where high energy density, low loss and high reliability are primary design considerations. The dielectric constant and loss of plastic films were studied by propagating pulses in a parallel plate transmission line consisting of two copper strips separated by the dielectric film under test. Results indicate that almost all the high-k plastic films containing polyvinylidene fluoride (PVDF) have losses which significantly degrade the pulse risetime. Risetimes which start out in the range of 2 to 4 ns (10 to 90%) can be changed to 20 to 25 ns in a distance less than 3 m. Various high-k development fluids were also evaluated for their high-frequency pulse propagation characteristics at low voltage. The modified spiral consists of a cylinder formed from a large number of insulated cables which are first laid parallel to the PFL axis and then given a moderate twist. The PFL is essentially a helical delay line in a form which accomplishes substantial pulse stretching without introducing significant turn-to-turn voltage gradients or distortion of the pulse shape. The advantage this generator has over standard L-C generators is its utilization of a single-spark-gap commutator. Standard L-C generators require a spark gap for every two stages, which results in switching problems and subsequent limited usage with the modified L-C circuit, no switching problems were encountered and output waveforms of multiple shot tests were consistent. Voltage amplification factors of two, four, and six were attempted using two, four, and six-stage configurations of the basic circuit. A toroidal transformer core, using either ferrite or Metglas 2714A, was studied. Computer simulations indicated the key parameter to be the flux linkage between the primary and the secondary windings of the pulse transformers. These high-frequency components give rise to high losses in the windings and core and usually become the dominant parameter in limiting the maximum repetition rate that can be handled by the transformer. It is shown that core losses can be minimized by proper core material selection and flux-excursion limited design. Winding losses, which are estimated by an extension of the techniques of E.C. In addition to the existing 4 Omega network, an RLC circuit was installed. The facility was designed to test thyratrons at 55 A of average current for run times of 100 s. The system has operated reliably at 25 kV and at peak currents of 3 and 6 kA at repetition rates up to 5 kHz. A common resonant charge circuit was also installed for high-repetition-rate operation.
