Melodrama is not a genre prominently associated with colonial cinema, but it was the most popular style within the Spanish cinematographic production on Equatorial Guinea. It analyses the visual representation around colonial scientists and their work. Science images were used to legitimize colonialism. La historia, que versa sobre las aventuras y enredos amorosos de cinco personajes femeninos, tiene también como protagonista a la convulsa ciudad de Madrid desde los últimos años de la dictadura de Primo de Rivera hasta la Guerra Civil. En concreto, gran parte de las escenas giran en torno a la icónica Compañía Telefónica y distintos cronotopos de la Gran Vía. Ya acabadas las seis temporadas (28 de abril de 2017–3 de julio de 2020), lo que a grandes rasgos podría ser estudiado como otro fenómeno audiovisual de masas, presenta interesantes ribetes socioculturales que nos invitan a indagar en la producción cultural de la época (1928–1939) para dilucidar hasta qué punto la exitosa serie tiene un anclaje fundacional y verificable en la literatura, historia, política, legislación laboral e igualdad de género con las que convivieron las y los protagonistas originales de la Generación del 27. Su peculiar acción, titulada Carrying consistió en una especie de procesión laica en la que su cuerpo, enfermo del síndrome y descalzo, fue llevado en andas por docenas de voluntarios que formaron una cadena humana por el centro de Madrid, desde el Museo del Prado hasta el Museo Nacional Centro de Arte Reina Sofía. Aunque no fue la única, esta performance es la más conocida de las reacciones artísticas al sida que se llevaron a cabo en España a finales de la década de 1980 y principios de 1990 para llamar la atención sobre el enorme impacto de la epidemia en el país. Este artículo analiza algunas respuestas al sida en el arte plástico de la España postransicional. En la primera parte, se examina el corpus artístico español dedicado al síndrome desde el momento de su aparición hasta mediados de la década de 1990. A continuación, se estudian sus características más idiosincráticas, que ponen de manifiesto la existencia de cierta continuidad temática y simbólica dentro del corpus artístico del sida y también en relación con otras disciplinas y, más específicamente, la literatura. First, it considers its relevance to discussions about natural talent, including the links with treatises like Examen de ingenios. Second, it shows how the adoption of ingenio as a motif in two biographies of the young Velázquez contributed to the crafting of a contrived narrative on the artist, privileging his giftedness and independence. Yet the demand was not so much in response to years of democratic pretence as it was a negotiation around how a new democratic identity would be performed. It was the performance of a demos that negotiated its popular substance (the ‘we’ in ‘we the people’) in situ and, more critically, through filmic representation.
