I argue that Levin challenged sentimental myths of Vilna as a centre of Yiddish culture by crafting naturalist fiction and reportage focused on the struggles of Vilna’s Jewish underclass and workers. In doing so, he developed a fictional universe that was directly engaged with and explored the social and political challenges of local Jewish life in the 1930s.","PeriodicalId":37193,"journal":{"name":"Colloquia","volume":null,"pages":null},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2021-12-30","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"85593588","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The focus is on the canonical short story “Dėdės ir dėdienės” [Uncles and Aunts], highlighting its place in gymnasium literature curricula and the semantic-interpretive points of reference in literature textbooks.The research had revealed that Vaižgantas was included in gymnasium literature curricula in the second decade of independence of Lithuania, when the state was already being established and the opportunities for the creation of a national education system opened up. The gymnasium curricula in interwar Lithuania included a number works by Vaižgantas: extracts from “Pragiedruliai” [Cloud Clearing], impressions, journalistic articles, and fragments of the short story “Uncles and Aunts.” Vaižgantas’s stories were studied in lower and upper grades. Only starting in 2002, they were no longer part of the lower secondary school curricula.Even before World War I, excerpts from Vaižgantas’s works entered various reading books (earlier than gymnasium curricula). Soon after the publication of author’s main works, “Cloud Clearing” and “Uncles and Aunts,” Vaižgantas was added in school curricula as an important 20th century Lithuanian author. His reception in literary science and Lithuanian school went hand in hand, as the major academic studies of Vaižgantas’s works appeared after his death. Undoubtedly, the school played the role of preserving or memorializing Vaižgantas’s life and works, and to some extent began the process of canonizing his oeuvre.The ideologies of different political periods led to distinct idea- and value-based points of reference for reading the Vaižgantas’s biography and works, which prevented the creation of a solid approach to perception and interpretation of his oeuvre that was binding on the canon. The obligatory ideological interpretation in the Soviet period overshadowed the aesthetic dimension of writer’s works; even though it was this dimension that had guaranteed constant renewal and change of Vaižgantas’s works in the literary canon.","PeriodicalId":37193,"journal":{"name":"Colloquia","volume":null,"pages":null},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2021-06-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"83494460","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The analysis of the story branches out from the research of the authors of the article about the concept of disability in life stories. The authors have also written about the reception of this work in the 1960s. This time, the article discusses the literary features of the text itself and the depiction of the experience of a sick and disabled body.The authors of the article phenomenologically analyze the multilayered nature of the experience of the illness in the text: they analyze the writer’s choice to tell the story from the patient’s perspective and draw attention to the relationship with one’s impaired body and the dynamics of the patient’s self-perception. Analyzing deeper, the authors show that corporeality and dignity are inextricably linked. The experience of pain reveals that pain is never purely physical (it is always existential) and that it is mediated. The experience of illness, like that of disability, depends on the attitudes of the people around us, on their thematized and latent attitudes, which lend different meanings to human vulnerability. According to the authors, Mačiukevičius’s work, which spoke of vulnerability of a body during the Soviet era, could be read afresh today, when ableism has been increasingly appearing in the humanities and social sciences.","PeriodicalId":37193,"journal":{"name":"Colloquia","volume":null,"pages":null},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2021-06-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"74848561","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The adaptation of this personal name of non-Lithuanian origin has undergone probably the biggest changes in Lithuanian culture. Today, we count eight different variants of its usage: Mielcke, Mielckė, Mielke, Mielkus, Milkė, Mylkė, Milkus, and Mielcke’ė. In the 20th century, two variants were the most common: Milkė in the interwar period and the first years after the war and Milkus from the mid1960s. Jurgis Lebedys (1913-1970), the most authoritative researcher of old Lithuanian literature and a lecturer at Vilnius University, introduced this form in the Lithuanian language. Adapted following the example of the popular Prussian Lithuanian name (not surname!), the form took root rather quickly and easily not only in Lithuania but also in the diaspora. After Lithuania regained its independence at the end of the 20th century and when the world of the Western culture opened up, two groups of researchers formed. One group advocates the original form Mielcke and implement it in their works, while other group, trying to preserve the connection with the long tradition of Lithuanian research, uses the adapted form, Milkus. As a single drop reflects the entire ocean, so the tradition of the use of the personal name Mielcke’ė and today’s practice reveal the problem of the use of personal names of all famous Lithuanian writers of non-Lithuanian origin. It can only be solved by an extensive scientific discussion. ","PeriodicalId":37193,"journal":{"name":"Colloquia","volume":null,"pages":null},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2021-06-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"79544221","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

By employing Peter Stockwell’s concept of cognitive deixis, the technique of deictic transfer and aspects of schema theory in the text, the fundamental mechanisms of the construction of the story have been highlighted, which in turn, lead to the observation that the text provokes the delayed categorization discussed by Reuven Tsur. In the text, the deictic center of the implicit reader is being developed in different temporal and spatial dimensions using deixis of the respective categories. The interpretation is complicated by the highlighting of the textual deixis: several versions of the same story are presented, the process of the narration itself is commented, and the reader is addressed directly, which, according to Stockwell, can be understood as an attempt to destroy the reader’s belief in the truthfulness of the story being told and to put them out. These formal features also determine the depth and multi-layered nature of the text. Looking at the formal elements of the text and the techniques it employs from the point of view of cognitive poetics, the story by Klimas can be viewed as an attempt to criticize the official Soviet discourse and undermine the dangers of trusting blindly the truth proclaimed by one man.","PeriodicalId":37193,"journal":{"name":"Colloquia","volume":null,"pages":null},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2021-06-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"82099729","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

It criticized the work of the committee that was in charge of the initiative, which was led by conservatives. The Catholic press was very reserved in its coverage of the initiatives of the memorial. The confessional aspect of the imagined Lithuanian national identity also hindered the involvement in a project that would unite the entire nation. In Russian-administered Lithuania, the emphasis was more on publications introducing Donelaitis’s personality and works. In the beginning of 1914, Kristijonas Duonelaitis’s Writings compiled by Jurgis Šlapelis was published in Vilnius; however, no public organization or institution sponsored the book. The difficulties in organizing activities to commemorate Donelaitis experienced by the Lithuanian Scientific Society testify to the fact that the poet had not yet been perceived as a national poet in Lithuania, and that there was a lack of coordinated work. In Russian ruled Lithuania, the articles and papers about Donelaitis by Juozas Gabrys Paršaitis, Mykolas Biržiška, Petras Leonas, Ignas Jurkūnas-Seinius, and Pranas Dovydaitis were overdue.With the outbreak of the war, the ambitions of the Catholic press to introduce the legacy of Donelaitis began to emerge. Some of the texts were used during the World War I for the purpose of Lithuanian cultural education. The studies of Gabrys-Paršaitis and Biržiška became an important part of the first literature textbooks of the Republic of Lithuania.","PeriodicalId":37193,"journal":{"name":"Colloquia","volume":null,"pages":null},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2021-06-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"86906329","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
