The misconceptions and stereotypes about the profession can make it difficult for PE teachers to be taken seriously and can discourage students from pursuing a career in the field. It’s important for PE teachers to advocate for the profession and to work to change these perceptions by promoting the true value and importance of PE. However, such preparedness can also lead to physical injuries such as shin splints, or mental fatigue, which can lead to dropout and/or burnout. Yoga is an activity that has become increasingly popular and has been shown to present both physical and mental benefits to its participants. This article aims to provide foundational information for coaches and young cross country and distance athletes to put yoga into action for physical and mental practice. The principles explored include (1) identification of skill abilities, (2) demonstration, (3) verbal instruction, (4) specificity and (5) feedback. Mosston’s Spectrum of Teaching Styles features 11 teaching styles ranging from a completely teacher-centered approach to a completely student-centered approach. These teaching styles are effective in addressing various student needs. Especially when multiple styles are utilized simultaneously, student learning can be maximized. The inclusion of outdoor pursuits and recreational activities has been shown to benefit students physically, socially and emotionally. Yet, few resources exist for physical educators who are interested in including outdoor adventure learning into their curricula. Currently, the resources that are available are tailored to secondary (high school and middle school) settings.
