Test accuracy and reaction time have been previous experiments’ primary dependent variables. However, contemporary research on stimulus equivalence has also included eye movement measures as a means of a fine-grained analysis of behavior. The present experiment investigates meaningful stimuli’s effect on eye movements. The present experiment was arranged as a group design, with 30 adult participants allocated in three groups. All learned 12 conditional discriminations in a one-to-many training structure before testing to establish three 5-member stimulus equivalence classes. One group was trained with meaningful sample stimuli, one with meaningful comparison stimuli, and one with all abstract stimuli. Results show significant differences in fixation durations and gaze transitions between the groups with meaningful stimuli and those with all abstract stimuli in the test for stimulus equivalence. Hence, measuring eye movements with eye-tracking technology can provide information about behavioral differences between conditions not obtained with accuracy scores.","PeriodicalId":37052,"journal":{"name":"European Journal of Behavior Analysis","volume":null,"pages":null},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2023-10-17","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"135993979","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

While covert mediation itself cannot be observed, several researchers have looked at different procedures that disrupt potential performance by “blocking” presumed covert mediation by engaging in unrelated overt verbal behavior to tell us more about the nature of this putative mediation. In this study, preschool-aged children were taught to tact pictures of familiar objects and select them from an array of eight. During delayed matching-to-sample (DMTS) trials, participants were required to either talk to the experimenter, look at distractor pictures, or match figures using a tangram toy. The type of “blocking” activity during the delay was manipulated in a test-retest multiple treatment design, and the resulting DMTS performance was compared. With some individual differences, the distractor task assumedly most incompatible with covert verbal rehearsal, a conversational interview, was the least disruptive to performance. These data suggest refraining from assuming performance reductions during “blocking” are caused by incompatibility with covert mediation.KEYWORDS: Covert behaviorprivate eventsjoint controldelayed matching-to-sampleverbal behaviormediation Disclosure statementNo potential conflict of interest was reported by the author(s).Compliance with ethical standardsThe authors have no known conflicts of interest. We evaluated reporting of treatment processes and outcomes within behaviour-analytic studies to consider recommendations for practitioners, as well as future research. Strengths of the literature were reporting of directly observed behavioural outcome data demonstrating the effectiveness of empirically supported treatment. However, there was variability in reporting aspects of the overall treatment process. With respect to multidisciplinary involvement, gaps in reporting included the frequency of involvement in assessment and treatment, as well as the roles of each discipline involved. Further, there were gaps in reporting of treatment goal progression, such as food variety, volume, texture and independence, as well as nutritional outcomes (oral intake, growth). Our findings support recommendations to improve reporting in the literature, to increase standardisation of processes and improved dissemination to the wider research community. Further, improved research reporting will increase practitioner knowledge of empirically supported treatment for paediatric feeding disorders. To this end, we provide recommendations and resources regarding multidisciplinary involvement and systematic monitoring of treatment goal progression.KEYWORDS: Treatment progress monitoringcompetencypaediatric feeding disordersavoidant/restrictive food intake disorder (ARFID)tube weaninginappropriate mealtime behaviourmulti/interdisciplinary team Disclosure statementNo potential conflict of interest was reported by the author(s).Data availability statementThe data that support the findings of this study are available from the corresponding author upon reasonable request.","PeriodicalId":37052,"journal":{"name":"European Journal of Behavior Analysis","volume":null,"pages":null},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2023-09-18","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"135150084","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
