Pieters","doi":"10.55465/wvaz3109","DOIUrl":"https://doi.org/10.55465/wvaz3109","url":null,"abstract":"Introduction The raising of a wooden shipwreck is a large undertaking, both the practicalities of excavating and lifting, and the requisite long term commitment of funding and personnel to its subsequent conservation, exhibition and curation. In reality, although technically challenging, the actual raising of a wreck takes the shortest time in the whole process. The subsequent conservation can take many years, followed by continual curation. However, as attested by the finds of the Vasa6, Skuldelev ships7 and Mary Rose8, which were discovered and excavated between the 1950s and 1980s, shipwrecks provide an important insight into maritime history both academically and through their public presentation. Prior to attempting to raise a wreck it is important to carry out a pre-disturbance survey in situ, in order to obtain a better understanding of its state of preservation. This is useful both in terms of designing a lifting strategy and in terms of advance planning of the conservation process. For example, the integral strength of the remaining wood determines if it is responsible to raise the wreck as a complete unit, or if it requires disassembly and lifting in separate sections/pieces. Furthermore, knowledge of the state of preservation of the wood can help in construction of holding tanks for impregnation and designing the optimal processes in terms of impregnation materials and drying regimes. Such a pre-disturbance survey of the state of preservation of the wreck of the Belgica was carried out in connection with proposals to raise her. The aims of the assessment were fourfold: Ȇ To get an overall impression of the strength of the wood from the Belgica, through in situ measurements and on samples of wood taken from the site. Ȇ To assess the presence and on going activity of macro wood boring organisms (molluscs such as Teredo navalis (shipworm) and crustaceans, such as Limnoria tripunctata (gribble)). Ȇ To analyse the wood to see if inorganic compounds were present, these may affect the subsequent conservation of the wreck should it be raised. Ȇ To test the developed assessment methodology on a large wooden shipwreck lying out at sea and by doing so contributing to conservation issues in maritime archaeology.","PeriodicalId":370339,"journal":{"name":"Relicta. Freytag, Thomas Van Driessche","doi":"10.55465/hrcz8534","DOIUrl":"https://doi.org/10.55465/hrcz8534","url":null,"abstract":"Der Erste Weltkrieg, la Grande Guerre, hat unfassbare Verluste gefordert, und der vierjährige Stellungskrieg an der Westfront zählt zu den blutigsten Schauplätzen der Weltgeschichte. 700 km Schützengräben umfasste die Westfront von der Küste bis an die Schweizer Grenze5 und Flanders Fields, die Ebene zwischen Tourcoing und Dunkerque mit Ieper im Zentrum, war eine der umkämpftesten Zonen in dieser Auseinandersetzung. Am Ende dieses Krieges zählten die Deutschen allein in Flandern rund 441.500 Tote, Verwundete, und Vermisste; die Alliierten rund 582.000 Tote, Verwundete und Vermisste6. Von den deutschen Toten wurden 134.898 auf Friedhöfen in Flandern begraben7. Von den unzähligen Toten, die sich noch im Gelände befinden, werden etwa zehn pro Jahr bei Bauarbeiten oder anderen Erdbewegungen entdeckt, geborgen, und im sogenannten Kameradengrab auf dem Friedhof Langemark beigesetzt8. Die vorliegende Studie widmet sich den Deutschen Soldatenfriedhöfen des Ersten Weltkriegs in Flandern9. Sie zeichnet deren Entwicklung nach, erläutert ihre Gestaltungsgrundsätze, legt dar, wer für die Errichtung und Pflege zuständig war, und konzentriert sich dann auf die bis heute bestehenden Friedhöfe in Hooglede-Ost, Langemark-Nord, Menen-Wald und Vladslo-Praetbosch. Die Studie ist in zwei große Teil unterteilt: Der erste Teil widmet sich der Geschichte der Deutschen Soldatenfriedhöfe von 1914-1954, jenem Jahr, als beschlossen wurde, alle Friedhofsanlagen (darunter 66 Ehrenfriedhöfe) bis auf vier aufzugeben und zigtausende Soldaten umzubetten10. Daher wird im ersten Teil der Studie neben der Darstellung der allgemeinen Geschichte der Soldatenfriedhöfe in Flandern immer auf die konkrete Situation der vier nach 1954 verbleibenden Friedhöfe eingegangen. Der zweite Teil konzentriert sich dann ausschließlich auf die Geschichte und Gestaltung nach 1954 und auf den gegenwärtigen Zustand der vier Friedhöfe. Das Ziel war, die wenig bekannte Geschichte dieser Friedhofsanlagen kontinuierlich und wissenschaftlich fundiert darzustellen. Die Studie sollte eine Grundlage für die Unterschutzstellung der damals noch nicht denkmalgeschützten Anlagen Hooglede und Menen geben und darüber hinaus Informationen bieten, die für die künftige Erhaltung und Pflege aller vier Anlagen nützlich sein könnten. In this article, two main sources were analyzed to reveal a better understanding of the architectural meaning of one of the first domed churches in the Netherlands: a commemorative medal (with preview of the planned facade) and a volume of poetry. Through the interaction of both text and image in these sources, several aspects were connected to each other: Abbot Ioachim Arsenius Schaeyck (1615-1631) is identified with the rebuilding of the church, with Amandus in the combat against Protestantism and with the apostle Peter as the original founder of the abbey (and consequently to the St Peter’s basilica in Rome). The new church is linked to the counter-reformation programme pursued by Rome, to a type of church architecture symbolizing the vitality of Christianity and to God as an actor in its construction. The subtle interplay of the commemorative medal and the anthems provided the spectator a preview of the planned church at the ceremony of the laying of the first stone. This was important as the building could not yet speak for itself and the message of triumph of Catholicism over heresy was a welcome one at the time of reconstruction in 1629. The counter-reformational agenda, depicting the church as a phoenix rising from its ashes after the destruction of the iconoclasms, is clear. This message is also supported by the architecture itself. By appealing to Italian architecture, a connection is made with a type of church typical of the Catholic counteroffensive. However, it is not a case of pure imitation, as the Italian architectural elements are merely applied for the purpose of the alliance that was crafted with a style of architecture signifying Catholic triumph and vitality. Op initiatief van het Gallo-Romeins Museum in Tongeren werd een eerste analyse uitgevoerd in het kader van een masterproef aan de VUB, met gebruik van het ‘standaard’ gefilterde DHMV7. Het toonde duidelijk het grote potentieel aan van dit instrument voor de detectie van Celtic Fields in bosgebieden. Geïnspireerd door dit resultaat werd een meer gedetailleerde analyse uitgevoerd aan de hand van het ongefilterde brondatabestand van het DHMV, waarvan de resolutie ongeveer 5 maal hoger is. The most commonly applied techniques involve side-scan sonar and multibeam systems, aimed to identify archaeological artefacts lying on the seabed. However, the main disadvantage of those techniques is that they cannot penetrate the subsurface. The marine seismic method, due to its penetration capacity, allows the detection and imaging of submerged archaeological objects.
