This paper presents the physical background of both non-characteristic harmonics and interharmonics. Generation causes are explored and discussed in detail. Extensive series of simulation of different power converter topologies are provided and compared with experimental results and existing standards. As a result of a study referring the behavior of an isolated electric system facing frequency disturbances, a fuzzy logic controller (FLC) was developed to improve the system´s dynamic performance. The validity of the proposed controller is evaluated by computer analysis using MATLAB/SIMULINK. The simulation results demonstrated that a small-scale wind turbine generation unit can be freely operated in an isolated distribution network without creating violation in power balance and voltage profile. Such sort of platforms can be useful to complement student's learning with some practical activities. Timetables flexibility is the main advantage of remote laboratories for both students and teachers, since these laboratories are in operation 24 hours per day without requiring any supervisory assistance. The protection and distribution power systems have recently changed by the effect of the new information and communication technologies. As these changes have been carried out in such a short period of time, professionals with knowledge in these topics are required. Additionally it would be needed to include distribution automation concepts in current subjects and finally create didactic material to be used in practical sessions. This paper presents an e-laboratory of electrical protections that emulates the structure and conditions of a distribution grid. Three Genetic Algorithms (GAs) have been developed to minimize the power losses of the system. The First GA enables the optimal sizing of the DG units given their locations. Alternatively, the second GA determines the optimal locations of the DG units assuming equal sizes of the units. The third GA enables the determination of both optimal sizes, on discrete values, and optimal locations. This evaluation is made by comparing a PLL (Phase-Locked-Loop), combined with Lagrange Multipliers Method, with an Adaptive Filter. Both algorithms aim to detect the positive sequence at the fundamental frequency on a given three-phase system voltages or currents. The purpose of this evaluation is to assess the better Positive-Sequence Detector for custom power devices, such as Active Power Filters. The comparative analysis was based on the evaluation of a series of steady state performance parameters (phase and amplitude errors, THD and unbalance) and on the response time. The tests were made to study the behavior of both approaches when working with highly distorted and unbalanced signals. Hybrid power supply system consists of a number of independent and different sources of electrical energy with different operating times during different seasons and with energy storage system. Deployment of a hybrid power system is expected in places outside the normal distribution network. For the further research and improvements it is necessary to know in detail the power flow from various sources to the load or to storage battery depending on different seasons. The autonomous monitoring system with remote data transmission system has been developed to monitor the power flow between different blocks of the hybrid power system. The monitoring system also allows efficiency evaluation during various operating modes. The article describes among others the design and implementation of modular and open monitoring system based on virtual instrumentation. The suggested computational model performance exactness is evaluated through comparison of simulation and experimental results with ideal and non-ideal supply voltage conditions. Once the representation effectiveness is proven, the model is then implemented in a more comprehensive program developed to cope with the dielectric and thermal relationship between system disturbances and appliance's supportability limits. This tool has been developed so as to provide a scientific and systematized way of analyzing consumer refunding demands to equipment damages eventually attributed to distribution system occurrences. There exist several approaches to find the optimal design. Nevertheless, these methods do not provide a sensitivity analysis to carry out the usual post-processing task in an optimization process. The paper analyses in a graphical way the influence of small perturbations, in the design constraints, that affect the optimal performances. In addition, the proposed analysis verifies that the design is optimal. These changes are intended to promote greater security in supply, to reduce energy bills as well as greenhouse gas emissions. If this effort make sense anywhere, it is even more significant in islands where conventional primary energy is considerably more expensive. Given the intermittence of renewable sources such as solar and wind, it becomes essential to search for effective solutions to integrate them into the grid.
