In the spirit of its co-founder, the Institute researches, publishes, teaches and develops practical programmes in all the areas for which it has been founded; in addition to ageing and coexistence, it also includes psychology and logotherapy, which were in its title when it was founded, including intoxication and ad-dictions, which have been the lifelong focus of the Institute’s co-founders. {"title":"Pilgrimage and Polemics: Early Reception of Latin Christendom in Kievan Rus’ between Byzantine Normativity and Practical Decisions","authors":"Simon Malmenvall","doi":"10.34291/edinost/78/01/malmenvall","DOIUrl":"https://doi.org/10.34291/edinost/78/01/malmenvall","url":null,"abstract":": This article analyses the main traits of reception of Latin (Roman Catholic) Christendom in Kievan Rus’, drawing from the notion of its confessional »otherness« in relation to the Eastern Orthodox norm. The mentioned reception is studied according to the East Slavic narrative sources written at the end of the eleventh and beginning of the twelfth centuries, i.e., directly after the »Great Schism« (1054) between Constantinople and Rome. The author of this article accentuates the complexity of the Rus’ attitude towards Latin Christians on various levels: 1) upholding the official Orthodoxy, following the Byzantine doctrinal themes as adopted in Church Slavic polemical literature, while, simultaneously, 2) respecting practical considerations of dynastic ties between the East Slavic political elite and ruling families of the neighbouring Latin world, 3) and venerating particular Latin saints. In this respect, special consideration is given to the travel diary on the Holy Land titled Life and Pilgrimage of Daniel, the Hegumen of the Land of Rus’, serving as a prime example of encountering confessional differences. Daniel’s Pilgrimage is placed within the political and cultural context after the First Crusade during the Frankish rule over Palestine; it brings some valuable testimonies about the »Latin-Greek« relations in the Kingdom of Jerusalem as perceived by an educated ecclesiastical traveller, himself originating from an Eastern Orthodox environment. Daniel’s thematization of his confessional »other« in the Holy Land reveals a similar ambiguity in the case of Rus’ itself: on a declarative level, the polemical writings of the Kievan metropolitans testify about a negative position on the »Latin heresies«; on the other hand, common veneration of particular saints, such as Olaf of Norway or Magnus of Orkney, and decisions of the East Slavic princes confirm the permanence of intercultural contacts and pragmatic willingness to cooperate","PeriodicalId":36962,"journal":{"name":"Unity and Dialogue","volume":"112 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2023-01-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"136053832","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Izraz medkrščanski, ki so ga najbrž predlagali pravoslavni in ga sprejeli katoliški udeleženci simpozija, pomeni v naši terminologiji ekumenski, izraz, ki ima ponekod pri pravoslavnih Grkih slabšalni pomen, zato je izraz medkrščanski primernejši za obe Cerkvi, ker je brez vsakega dvoumja in brez vsake večpomenskosti. Te medkrščanske simpozije je leta 2021 omenil kot »pomembne« tudi papež Frančišek v svojem govoru med srečanjem v pravoslavni nadškofijski palači v Atenah predstojniku Grške pravoslavne cerkve nadškofu Hieronimu II. in navzočim grškim metropolitom (Škafar 2022, 2.307).","PeriodicalId":36962,"journal":{"name":"Unity and Dialogue","volume":"112 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2023-01-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"136053537","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Basic terms diagnosed in the context of Anglo-Saxon studies in question provide the perspectives which are going to be the rudiment for further research that will lead to the appearance of various prejudices and half-truths which, without being questioned, will continue to exist in this and future generations. Starting the joint research from the aspect of extremely complex and multidisciplinary Anglo-Saxon studies may well effect the development of the dialogue and final ecclesiastical reconciliation of the East and West. This should be based on historical facts so that the conclusion of the scientific research within Anglo-Saxon studies will be valid and precise, and in no way ambiguous and insufficiently acceptable for both the western and the eastern individual. The article points out some perspectives of the future research within Anglo-Saxon studies.","PeriodicalId":36962,"journal":{"name":"Unity and Dialogue","volume":"14 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2023-01-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"136054227","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The Hebrew lexicon, BDB (1906) and TWOT lexicon (2003) confirm this difficulty, saying, »the meaning of this word is unknown«. PONS Kompaktwörterbuch Althebräisch (2015) states that this word is untranslated, while other sources translate it as song, prayer, or epigram. Allen P. Ross (2012, 48), a Hebrew scholar, indicates that its meaning is disputed. Ibn Ezra (2009, 112) interprets that this word refers to a very precious Psalm. He compares it with ketem paz or the finest gold in Song of Songs 5:11 because both words are derived from the same root. This perplexity also occurs in the ancient texts as they differ in their translations. This article, therefore, attempts to study and solve this dilemmatic word in ancient texts with a textual criticism and a contextual study as its methodology. At the end, the meaning of ם ָתּ ְכ ִמ will be applied into Christian education field.","PeriodicalId":36962,"journal":{"name":"Unity and Dialogue","volume":"1 1","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2022-01-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"69879761","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
