It enables seamless interoperability between nodes by offering a common interface to remote method invocations. In the past, communication between these embedded devices has been realized over proprietary protocols specifically tailored for the given use case. This, however, strongly limits the possibilities to integrate new functions into the network and extend it by new sensing and actuation devices. In contrast to proprietary solutions, S-RPC is a framework which allows unified access to functions on remote devices. S-RPC uses an efficient data representation scheme to achieve small message sizes, and permits dynamic integration of new devices with different functions into the network during runtime. We show its real-world applicability through a reference implementation, which occupies less than 4% of a TelosB's resources, and increases the energy consumption per invocation by just 0.11%.","PeriodicalId":369430,"journal":{"name":"2011 IEEE International Conference on Pervasive Computing and Communications Workshops (PERCOM Workshops)","volume":"114 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2011-03-21","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"116482883","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

In this paper, we reveal the multi-agent architecture (MAA) that is designed in the mobile educational game. The multi-agent architecture design enables development of a lightweight, flexible, and scalable game on the platform with limited resources such as mobile phones. Six agents have been implemented that worked together in this game. Each agent has its own tasks and sometimes needs help from other agents. Using agents in developing system can not only solve the limited resource issue, but also provide us a way to add further functions and to replace agents into the game easily to improve the game anytime. This paper focuses on designing the tasks that each agent needs to do and the collaborations that may happen among agents.","PeriodicalId":369430,"journal":{"name":"2011 IEEE International Conference on Pervasive Computing and Communications Workshops (PERCOM Workshops)","volume":"44 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2011-03-21","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"114984393","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Heterogeneity of service protocols inhibits the interoperation among smart objects using different service protocols. Existing works overcome the heterogeneity by assuming that service protocols used are known in advance so that components necessary for interoperations can be deployed before runtime. This assumption prevents existing works from being applied to situations where a user wants to spontaneously configure her smart objects to interoperate with smart objects found nearby without (or with minimal) user intervention. In this paper, we propose a service interoperability gateway that discovers service protocols used in a given environment, finds smart objects using these protocols, and instantiates proxies for interoperability between smart objects.","PeriodicalId":369430,"journal":{"name":"2011 IEEE International Conference on Pervasive Computing and Communications Workshops (PERCOM Workshops)","volume":"32 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2011-03-21","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"134103609","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

We organize the data dissemination process in three main tasks: discovery, assessment, and seizing of data exchange opportunities. One major problem is the limitation in bandwidth due to large amounts of data and short communication time slots. We elaborate on this problem by presenting preliminary results which favor an approach which disseminate date fairly over the nodes in the network.","PeriodicalId":369430,"journal":{"name":"2011 IEEE International Conference on Pervasive Computing and Communications Workshops (PERCOM Workshops)","volume":"454 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2011-03-21","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"132671043","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

This in turn leads to improved decision making, allows for better resource management, and helps to reduce information overload. SVS approaches operate by trying to extract and interpret higher “semantic” level events that occur in video. On of the key challenges of Smart Video Surveillance is that of person identification where the task is for each subject that occur in a video shot to identify the person it corresponds to. The problem of person identification is very complex in the resource constrained environments where transmission delay, bandwidth restriction, and packet loss may prevent the capture of high quality data. In this paper we connect the problem of person identification in video data with the problem of entity resolution that is common in textual data. Specifically, we show how the PI problem can be successfully resolved using a graph-based entity resolution framework called RelDC that leverages relationships among various entities for disambiguation. We apply the proposed solution to a dataset consisting of several weeks of surveillance videos. The results demonstrate the effectiveness and efficiency of our approach even with low quality video data.","PeriodicalId":369430,"journal":{"name":"2011 IEEE International Conference on Pervasive Computing and Communications Workshops (PERCOM Workshops)","volume":"28 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2011-03-21","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"133218933","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

In this paper we propose a novel peer selection algorithm named CFPL for mobile P2P systems over 3G cellular networks. By taking not only the available uplink bandwidth of peers but also the traffic load on cells into account, the CFPL algorithm can achieve good peer performance while ensuring favorable load balance on the cells in 3G cellular networks.","PeriodicalId":369430,"journal":{"name":"2011 IEEE International Conference on Pervasive Computing and Communications Workshops (PERCOM Workshops)","volume":"80 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2011-03-21","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"133659238","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

In this proposal, we demonstrate a web-based visualization system (CASASviz) that integrates monitoring, analysis, and automated recognition of residents behavior patterns in smart environments. In our data collection module, we collect real sensor data from the CASAS smart apartment testbed. For our data adapter, we translate the raw data to various compatible formats for different visualization applications. In our visualization application module, we visualize resident behavior graphs that allow users to understand their behavior patterns in our smart environments.","PeriodicalId":369430,"journal":{"name":"2011 IEEE International Conference on Pervasive Computing and Communications Workshops (PERCOM Workshops)","volume":"154 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2011-03-21","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"114903579","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Besides its traditional applications for consumers and business, engineers and researchers continue to find innovative ways to use it. We have been collecting GPS data from vehicles and people for the past six years, with over 155 million GPS points collected from about 700 different cars and individuals. In this talk, I will describe our research at Microsoft in using GPS data to model and predict where people go, investigate location privacy, and create road maps. I will also talk about some practical tools for research like this, some pitfalls, and ideas for new projects.","PeriodicalId":369430,"journal":{"name":"2011 IEEE International Conference on Pervasive Computing and Communications Workshops (PERCOM Workshops)","volume":"51 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2011-03-21","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"122149532","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

To facilitate the management of ubiquitous service resources, this paper presents a novel platform called ubiquitous cloud, borrowing the concept of the cloud computing. The ubiquitous cloud supports various stakeholders to use appropriate ubiquitous objects in infrastructure, platform and application levels. We present an architecture consisting of four key components: the service resource registry, the adaptive resource finder, the context manager and the service concierge. To demonstrate the effectiveness, we develop a practical adaptive service “room environment relocation service” in an actual home network system, with and without the proposed ubiquitous cloud.","PeriodicalId":369430,"journal":{"name":"2011 IEEE International Conference on Pervasive Computing and Communications Workshops (PERCOM Workshops)","volume":"114 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2011-03-21","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"124077083","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
