We present a framework for an embedded approach to context recognition which reduces power consumption. This is accomplished by identifying class-sensor dependencies, and using prediction methods to identify likely future classes, thereby identifying sensors which can be temporarily turned off. Different methods for prediction, as well as integration with several classifiers is analyzed and the methods are evaluated in terms of computational load and loss in quality of context. The results indicate that the amount of energy which can be saved is dependent on two variables (the acceptable loss in quality of recognition, and the number of most likely classes which should be accounted for), and two scenario-dependent properties (predictability of the context sequences and size of the context-sensor dependency sets).","PeriodicalId":369430,"journal":{"name":"2011 IEEE International Conference on Pervasive Computing and Communications Workshops (PERCOM Workshops)","volume":"17 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2011-03-21","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"129270110","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

However, the development, deployment, and maintenance of highly efficient monitors and controllers for wastewater processing tanks are significantly challenging. Self-powered, wireless sensor networks (WSNs) are an ideal candidate for this application, since their deployment would have the least impact on the existing infrastructure. A novel wireless sensor network is presented in this paper that integrates microbial fuel cells (MFCs), field-programmable analog arrays (FPAAs), and low-power networking protocols into the sensors to make them self-powered, highly flexible, and adaptive. MFCs convert chemicals in the waste water into electrical energy, while FPAAs provide a means of performing ultra-low-power, real-time, and adaptive processing of the sensor signals. This design achieves sustainable monitoring and control of wastewater treatment with minimal impact to existing infrastructure.","PeriodicalId":369430,"journal":{"name":"2011 IEEE International Conference on Pervasive Computing and Communications Workshops (PERCOM Workshops)","volume":"5 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2011-03-21","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"115366098","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

In this framework, interactions take place between different parties to simplify users' everyday life in a natural and transparent manner. These interactions, that are generally oriented to the delivery of services, usually involve the exchange of identity information and personal data over the networks. Since transactions may occur between familiar or unfamiliar entities, Identity Management (IdM) becomes indispensable to avoid security problems. Here, we aim to show that risk evaluation must be considered as a key enabler to foster collaboration between parties in a dynamic but yet secure manner. Taking this premise as a foundation, we are designing a methodology to assess risk. We also aim to integrate risk assessment with trust evaluation in order to aid in decision-making procedures, allowing the construction of flexible and dynamic IdM systems that are more suitable to be deployed in pervasive scenarios.","PeriodicalId":369430,"journal":{"name":"2011 IEEE International Conference on Pervasive Computing and Communications Workshops (PERCOM Workshops)","volume":"23 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2011-03-21","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"115716143","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The many benefits are offset by a multitude of prejudices and fears, including security concerns and a heavy scheduling and coordinating burden. For this reason this paper introduces vHike an easy-to-use management system for dynamic ride-sharing running on modern Smartphones. By the use of techniques well-known from Web 2.0 social networks the threats and social discomfort emanated by ride-sharing is mitigated. With vHike we want to show that a proper designed social dynamic ride-sharing system can be feasible and viable.","PeriodicalId":369430,"journal":{"name":"2011 IEEE International Conference on Pervasive Computing and Communications Workshops (PERCOM Workshops)","volume":"10 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2011-03-21","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"126924875","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Most elders living in such facilities suffer from multiple chronic illnesses. Accompanying these illnesses are slow declines of the elders' physical and mental health. Continuous tracking of the elders' daily activities is required to detect the declines early. To facilitate long-term mobility tracking of the elders, we investigate, in this work, the potential of a WSN-based indoor location system as a support for the already-overloaded nursing staff. Through the deployment of a WSN-based Real-Time Indoor Location System (WSN-RTLS) in the university hospital's elder care center for 8 months, we find that: (1) each elder's daily mobility shows a reoccurring pattern. The pattern, however, differs from individual to individual. (2) The mobility level shows a significant variability, i.e., not all elders show reoccurring patterns in mobility levels. These suggest that mere quantity of how much the elders move around the facility will not be a suitable target for behavioral modeling. Exact location of the elders' presence, rather, is more relevant. Insitu WSN-RTLSs would be an enabler towards early detection of the elders' physical or mental decline.","PeriodicalId":369430,"journal":{"name":"2011 IEEE International Conference on Pervasive Computing and Communications Workshops (PERCOM Workshops)","volume":"1 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2011-03-21","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"125779759","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Life-log systems, advertisement and smart environments are only some of the applications that can be supported by information regarding user patterns and routine behaviors. Latent Dirichlet Allocation (LDA) is a powerful mechanism to extract recurrent behaviors and high-level patterns (called topics) from mobility data in an unsupervised manner. In this paper we test the effectiveness of LDA in identifying users' routine behaviors from mobility data collected with Google Latitude. Results show that the proposed technique provides good results in discovering patterns and routine behaviors.","PeriodicalId":369430,"journal":{"name":"2011 IEEE International Conference on Pervasive Computing and Communications Workshops (PERCOM Workshops)","volume":"35 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2011-03-21","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"124868850","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

There are ten large public screens installed in the space, displaying user-generated videos about various aspects of the city and a real-time map that visualises users' interaction with the city. The application aims to engage the general public by functioning as a unique ‘point of connection’ for socio-cultural and technological interactions, making the space a lively social place where people can have meaningful experiences of interacting with people and places of Sapporo through mobile phones (keitai) and the public screens in the space. This paper first outlines the contextual background and key concept for the application's design. Then the paper discusses the user interaction processes, technical specifications, and interface design, followed by the conclusions and outlook.","PeriodicalId":369430,"journal":{"name":"2011 IEEE International Conference on Pervasive Computing and Communications Workshops (PERCOM Workshops)","volume":"20 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2011-03-21","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"124970411","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

On the other hand, smart phones, home automation devices, robots and other intelligent systems are becoming ubiquitous and are increasingly equipped with flexible networking capabilities.
