Furthermore, services to be composed for coordination are sometimes distributed in multiple networks. In that case, intermediate nodes linking these networks have to route communication data toward appropriate destinations. However, incorporating such routing protocols into applications significantly increases complexity of the code. In this paper we propose AmbientTalk/M, a concurrent distributed programming language for coordination of services among multiple networks. The language provides powerful support for creating routing frameworks to hook up two or more networks. With the language support, we can express how service information is propagated or how messages are routed using high-level abstraction over underlying network technology. We show the language is flexible enough to express a variety of routing frameworks with respect to robustness, traffic efficiency, and security. Because the frameworks are installed reflectively, they are completely separated from application code. To the best of our knowledge, this is the first attempt to integrate routing semantics among multiple networks into a programming language using reflection.","PeriodicalId":369430,"journal":{"name":"2011 IEEE International Conference on Pervasive Computing and Communications Workshops (PERCOM Workshops)","volume":"15 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2011-03-21","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"130194945","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Our proposed system is part of an ongoing investigation aimed at efficiently timing the self-administration of prescription drugs in Parkinson's disease patients by using wireless sensors to capture distinctive motion patterns that indicate the onset of dyskinesia lapses as the prescription drug wears off. Our prototype incorporates three pairs of accelerometer/gyroscope sensors, each connected to a wireless node equipped with an IEEE 802.15.4 radio. Sensor data are transmitted to a computer that is employed for visualization. We describe practical experience encountered during the initial development of our prototype, and outline the potential battery and bandwidth conservation benefits introduced by employing popular signal processing methods.","PeriodicalId":369430,"journal":{"name":"2011 IEEE International Conference on Pervasive Computing and Communications Workshops (PERCOM Workshops)","volume":"41 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2011-03-21","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"121337416","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The energy trade-off when offloading a task is analyzed and measured in several different scenarios. An example case of offloading indexing is presented. The problem of cloud-assisted mobile desktop search is introduced and a possible solution outlined. This paper argues that the synergy between mobile platforms and cloud computing is under-utilized and should be explored further, particularly in the search and synchronization use case. Our measurements support offloading (parts of) search related tasks to a cloud service.","PeriodicalId":369430,"journal":{"name":"2011 IEEE International Conference on Pervasive Computing and Communications Workshops (PERCOM Workshops)","volume":"199 1 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2011-03-21","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"127028111","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Patients and family members usually have a hard time to acquire necessary information in hospitals. The healthcare literacy, a wide range of patient-age population, and the text-only teaching sheets are important factors to block the communication. Therefore, the proposed work presents an innovative information board that is designed specifically for current pediatric healthcare environment to deliver messages more effectively through a fun and interactive approach. The I See! System carries four goals: Inform, Set expectation, Educate and Ease Anxiety (I.S.E.E). The innovative I See! System achieves these goals through categories, such as introduction video clip, interactive games, key words section and parents' place. Using different sections in the module, patients and families can engage more effectively in medical procedures. The distinguishing features in I See! module are Age-Adaptable, Audio-Visual, Multi-Lingual, Multi-Sensory, Interactive and Procedural. In addition, this module is a mobile, touch-screen and web-based appliance to prepare patients and families well to take the examinations in hospitals. Lastly, this work also discusses how the information in healthcare system could be delivered to patients and families more efficiently.","PeriodicalId":369430,"journal":{"name":"2011 IEEE International Conference on Pervasive Computing and Communications Workshops (PERCOM Workshops)","volume":"85 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2011-03-21","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"132675057","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Indulska","doi":"10.1109/PERCOMW.2011.5766961","DOIUrl":"https://doi.org/10.1109/PERCOMW.2011.5766961","url":null,"abstract":"Conventional layered protocols are not capable to handle the vagaries of Wireless Mesh Networks (WMN) such as rapidly changing wireless channel quality, battery power and network topology. Most WMN cross-layer proposals to overcome these problems utilize only a limited set of parameters from the concerned layers rendering them incapable of network and system wide optimizations as they do not consider global network context. Additionally, their application is limited by the use-case and deployment scenarios as well as technologies considered and can also lead to destructive interaction due to the lack of a global view and also the lack of communication between the numerous cross-layer adaptations. To make WMNs truly pervasive, there is an urgent need to make the WMN protocol stack context-aware, so that it can adapt dynamically to the deployment scenarios and operating conditions. Early designs for global network context management for WMN do not reflect WMN limitations such as scarce network capacity and CPU and RAM constraints of mobile devices. Most also do not consider higher-level context and situation reasoning models and lack a simplified way of representing, managing and gathering context information. Some of the current proposals utilize generic context gathering concepts from Distributed Systems that could lead to excessively high communication overhead in WMN. This paper presents the requirements for developing a Middleware for managing WMN protocol and network context, evaluates the state of the art and proposes a concrete, extensible, lightweight and comprehensive context management system for WMN named MESH-CMS which can overcome the aforementioned problems.","PeriodicalId":369430,"journal":{"name":"2011 IEEE International Conference on Pervasive Computing and Communications Workshops (PERCOM Workshops)","volume":"44 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2011-03-21","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"122207589","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

However, IA is a much broader term than network security and relates to the managing of the risks associated with the use, processing, storage, and transmission of information. The most basic model of IA relies on three properties: confidentiality, integrity, and availability, thus it is often referred to as the CIA model. The wide consensus is that the commonly assumed attributes of sensor nodes, such as low energy, low computational power, unattended operation, and wireless connectivity are considered challenges in implementing IA in sensor networks. Similarly, the broad range of applications, which results in broad range of possibly heterogeneous information modalities, makes the problem even more complex. Though, the relatively constant membership of sensor networks is usually perceived as an advantage. Similarly, the typical massive deployment of nodes can be exploited in the design of IA protocols. In this talk, I will describe an extension of the CIA model and its application to sensor networks. In particular, I will discuss a number of approaches to support IA in sensor networks.","PeriodicalId":369430,"journal":{"name":"2011 IEEE International Conference on Pervasive Computing and Communications Workshops (PERCOM Workshops)","volume":"137 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2011-03-21","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"131226902","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The goal is to maximize the Value of Information (VoI) for WSN users. We discuss three different levels of WSN architecture. The lowest level focuses on individual nodes and their basic functions of sensing and routing. We give an example showing how the use of auctions at individual nodes can help to efficiently perform these functions. The middle level focuses on services that are abstractions of applications running on sensors. Complex applications are composed automatically from basic ones. We discuss the use of switch options to address some of the challenges arising in such dynamic service composition. Finally, we consider the highest level - network deployment and sharing - and conjecture that options may be valuable in creating proper incentives for rational deployment and sharing of WSNs.","PeriodicalId":369430,"journal":{"name":"2011 IEEE International Conference on Pervasive Computing and Communications Workshops (PERCOM Workshops)","volume":"15 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2011-03-21","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"133179086","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

It becomes therefore evident that there is a necessity to provide optimal resource discovery mechanisms, the effectiveness of which will constitute the foundation for the efficient operation of pervasive computing environments. To mitigate the drawbacks brought by the inherent nature of pervasive environments, i.e. dynamicity, heterogeneity and scalability of the network infrastructure, we propose to employ P2P overlay networks that lead to more manageable topologies and optimize resource monitoring by scaling down the degree of complexity. In particular, we take advantage of bio-inspired self-organization mechanisms to construct reliable P2P overlays and thus provide more robust and adaptive monitoring solutions. High-level policy-based management operations driven by monitored context information enable a further level of runtime adaptation and optimization, subject to the overall application requirements. We report here on our ongoing work in this research area.","PeriodicalId":369430,"journal":{"name":"2011 IEEE International Conference on Pervasive Computing and Communications Workshops (PERCOM Workshops)","volume":"25 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2011-03-21","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"131781325","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

There are many existing methods for controlling appliances according to the user's preference by describing each user's preference and rules. However, these methods cannot be applied to public spaces where many general users with different preferences exist. In this paper, we propose an architecture and a method for controlling devices that affect the users comfort level (e.g., air conditioner) in public smartspaces. Our goal is to maximize the comfort level of users with various preferences by appropriately controlling devices. Furthermore, to efficiently collect user preferences for the large context domain, we propose a method for estimating user's comfort level for an unknown context from the already known user's comfort level for some contexts and the distance to those contexts. To evaluate the proposed estimation method, we conducted the questionnaire to measure the user's comfort levels for various contexts, and evaluated the accuracy of the proposed estimation method by comparing the measured sample with the estimated one. As a result, our method estimated user's comfort level in error within 1 among 4 comfort levels.","PeriodicalId":369430,"journal":{"name":"2011 IEEE International Conference on Pervasive Computing and Communications Workshops (PERCOM Workshops)","volume":"16 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2011-03-21","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"123066804","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
