By classifying the measured colours it is possible to automatically determine if the food is cooked to an optimum perceived colour. Developments have been made on previous work by the authors (O'Farrell et al., 2002 and 2003) by further examining the internal colour of the food and also looking at food that does not have an even colour externally. Spectroscopic techniques are employed to determine the colour and this signal is interrogated using an artificial neural network. Continuous monitoring, recording and computer-assisted signal processing of respiratory sounds can provide critical information in assisting diagnosis and anesthesia management. This is especially useful in situations of airway complications such as asthma, pulmonary edema, bronchial intubation, pheumothorax, spasm, tube malfunctioning, etc. Technology development of a sensor and information processing system for continuous respiratory sound monitoring will enhance diagnosis capability that is currently provided by many measured variables such as airway pressure, flow rate, O/sub 2/ and CO/sub 2/ levels, blood O/sub 2/ saturation, etc. This paper reports a preliminary effort towards developing such a system.The system will use multiple acoustic sensors (accelerometers) to measure respiratory sounds at designated auscultation sites. To attenuate noise artifacts in measured signals, noise reference sensors will be applied; Sensor signals will be scaled, synchronized and amplified by a multi-channel sound adaptor, and then inputted into a computer. The signals are first processed for noise attenuation and signal separation. The cantilever beam was fabricated using porous silicon micromachining techniques, surface tension and the difference in the thermal expansion coefficients between the two films on the cantilever beam. Then the height of the curled cantilever beam is measured as a function of the annealing temperature and time. Using these results, Piezoresistive flow sensors with micro cantilever structure were fabricated using (100), n/n/sup +//n three layer silicon wafer and their characteristics were then investigated. The proposed micro flow sensor consists of four identical silicon cantilever beam with piezoresistors. The total resistance and sheet resistance were obtained about 1K/spl Omega/ and 50/spl Omega/ respectively. In this aim, an array of six commercial gas sensors (TGS, Figaro) is tested to detect and quantify accurately in a reduced time, two pollutants gases H/sub 2/S and NO/sub 2/ alone or mixed in industrial areas. Known inconvenient of these resistive chemical sensors have been taken into account in this work, either by the characterisation procedure (humidity dependence, non linearity) or by the pattern recognition method (drift, non selectivity). Line power is measured with a Cirrus Logic CS5460A single-phase bi-directional power-energy IC which has two analog inputs (150 mV RMS full scale), dual A/D converters and a multiplier used to calculate true power and RMS voltage/current. Line voltage and current are scaled to the IC input with a voltage divider (1000:1) and a current shunt (5 m/spl Omega/), respectively. Binary data from the energy IC is transmitted to a microprocessor (PICmicro) which converts it into human readable (ASCII) form and sends it through the Esbus to a communication module, which reformats it into TCP/IP protocol format and transmits it over the Ethernet. Up to 9 digital power meters may be connected on the optically isolated Esbus. This configuration is modified from a conventional Mach-Zehnder interferometer (MZI) with a provision of a feedback path. Such scheme possesses large transmission intensity change with a small phase unbalance between two arms of MZI. This property can greatly enhance the sensitivity by one to two order of magnitude compared with a traditional MZI-based sensor. The use of an analog programmable circuit (FPAA) as a sensor's conditioning interface, allows a full benefit of its reconfigurable aspect, to carry out self-test and self-adjustment routines, in order to calibrate the measurement chain. The proposed software calibration method permits a successive correction and linearization of the whole measurement system transfer function, using a few number of calibration data. This provided information about the morphology and the nanostructure of the samples. The surface gap was then determined through scanning tunneling spectroscopy (STS) and was found to be much narrower than the bulk gap determined via photoluminescence. This effect is a consequence of the high density of surface states in this material. Pinning of the Fermi level due to these states is decreased when the sample is illuminated at low temperature, whereas at high temperature the effect is masked by the high density of free carriers.","PeriodicalId":369277,"journal":{"name":"Proceedings of IEEE Sensors 2003 (IEEE Cat.
