The proposed design allows aggressive voltage scaling in the presence of process variation by employing an error concealing method based on the inherent error tolerance of digital signal processing applications. Based on a system-level analysis, we demonstrate that significant energy savings can be achieved from voltage scaling and switching activity reduction for computational components. Using the proposed method, we can also achieve energy savings for other subsystems such as memory by increasing compression ratio. The experimental results show that average overall energy savings of up to ∼50% are possible over a conventional design in a 45nm technology.","PeriodicalId":368538,"journal":{"name":"2011 IEEE Workshop on Signal Processing Systems (SiPS)","volume":"47 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2011-12-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"127643562","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Efficient designs of these GRN generators are required for testing the newest communications standards, which consider multiple channels working at higher data rates. In this paper, a new reconfigurable architecture for the generation of GRN at each clock cycle is proposed. The design consists in the polynomial approximation of the inverse method, implemented through parallel computing techniques using processor arrays. Time and area analysis carried out show a performance improvement when compared with previous works. Finally, the architecture's statistical performance was corroborated in QAM-VBLAST transmission scheme.","PeriodicalId":368538,"journal":{"name":"2011 IEEE Workshop on Signal Processing Systems (SiPS)","volume":"11 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2011-12-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"115905661","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

In this paper, a novel technique to reduce the power consumed by embedded SRAM memory is introduced. The proposed method is an on-chip circuit to measure the optimal data retention voltage (DRV) of the SRAM array. The implemented DRV computing circuit consists of a built-in-self-test (BIST) unit, a DC-DC converter and some control logic. The proposed technique can be used to accurately measure the DRV to ensure the SRAM operates at its minimum energy point. The circuit was developed in 90nm technology and simulated using HSPICE. Monte-Carlo simulation of 100k samples determined the DRV as 150mV whereas the proposed technique showed that the DRV of the SRAM under test could be lowered to 80mV which would result in significant power savings.","PeriodicalId":368538,"journal":{"name":"2011 IEEE Workshop on Signal Processing Systems (SiPS)","volume":"430 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2011-12-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"131930773","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

This method, based on a parallel proximal algorithm, gives a great flexibility in the choice of the constrained criterion to be minimized, thus allowing us to take into account different types of noise distributions. Our main objective is to present an iterative estimation method based on recent convex optimization algorithms and proximal tools. The proposed encoder is based on a modification of MacKay encoding scheme. The introduced modification enables the application of MacKay scheme for quasi-cyclic (QC) LDPC codes combined with a proposed matrix puncturing scheme based on an also proposed parity-check matrix construction to achieve code-rate compatibility. The proposed encoding scheme and VLSI encoder architecture address the problem of encoding complexity, since about 80% of MacKay encoding algorithm complexity is linearly depended on LDPC check node degree. The proposed matrix puncturing scheme can produce good BER performance especially for high puncturing rates, where only a few parity check symbols are transmitted. A comparison with prior art in puncturing is offered, which shows superior performance of the proposed scheme, in terms of coding gain without any hardware cost.","PeriodicalId":368538,"journal":{"name":"2011 IEEE Workshop on Signal Processing Systems (SiPS)","volume":"3 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2011-12-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"117177377","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The challenges are unreliable wireless communications, harsh environment, and limited energy and computation resources. To ensure the desired level of service, it is essential to diagnose performance issues e.g. due to low quality links or energy depletion. This paper presents remote diagnostics and performance analysis that comprise self-diagnostics on embedded sensor nodes, the remote collection of diagnostics, and the design of a diagnostics analysis tool. Unlike the related proposals, our approach allows correcting detected problems by identifying the reasons for misbehavior. The diagnostics is verified with a practical WSN implementation. It has only a small overhead, less than 18 B/min per node in the implementation, allowing the use in bandwidth and energy constrained WSNs.","PeriodicalId":368538,"journal":{"name":"2011 IEEE Workshop on Signal Processing Systems (SiPS)","volume":"63 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2011-12-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"131812833","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The desired flexibility requires an effective utilization of system resources. In this paper, we introduce the concept of system scenarios in wireless communication baseband engines. The scenario methodology classifies the system behavior from a cost perspective and provides the necessary information for an effective system tuning. Apart from the case study, we propose improvements at the detection of the scenarios at run time achieving a better tradeoff between cost estimation accuracy and detection overhead. From our case study, a representative example the WLAN communication protocol, we can demonstrate the accurate prediction of the execution time of each packet, which on average is 90% shorter than the worst case, allowing us to use the remaining time for the optimization of specifications like power consumption.","PeriodicalId":368538,"journal":{"name":"2011 IEEE Workshop on Signal Processing Systems (SiPS)","volume":"21 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2011-12-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"127704869","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The mode and direction prediction in H.264/AVC encoder is responsible for a huge portion of the delay in the transcoder. An efficient transcoder would take advantage of the information stored in MPEG-2 bitstream (i.e. DCT coefficients) to simplify the IN-TRA prediction in H.264/AVC. Based on the spatial activity analysis using a smoothness determining factor and an edge orientation detector, an early mode decision technique and an INTRA direction prediction for each mode are proposed. The proposed algorithm utilizes the DCT coefficients of the MPEG-2 to eliminate redundant operations in the H.264/AVC encoder part of the transcoder. The Experimental results; using frames with different resolution; show 92% transcoding time elimination at slight PSNR degradation (less than 3.5%) compared with the conventional transcoder.","PeriodicalId":368538,"journal":{"name":"2011 IEEE Workshop on Signal Processing Systems (SiPS)","volume":"22 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2011-12-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"126876458","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
