Similar phenomena are observed in the saturated hydrocarbon liquids, n-hexane and cyclohexane, whereas great difference is observed in the unsaturated hydrocarbons, 1-hexene and benzene. In the case of bush-type light emission, the mean velocity is about 100 m/s, and the waveforms of the photo and the prebreakdown currents are pulsive. The results obtained are following. (1) V-t characteristics of polymeric films immersed in LHe are inferior to those in LN2. (2) Observation of the eroded films by a scanning electron microscope made it clear that partial discharge in LHe produced a mesh-like pattern on the surface while in an uneven surface was formed. The layer effect depends on the waveform and the magnitude of the applied voltage. Under impulse voltage and under ac low voltage, the sample with the larger number of layers shows the higher resistance to breakdown. Under ac high voltage, however, the superiority is reversed. Static field measurements have been extended to the transient period following the application of a step voltage. Significant space charge effects resulting in electrode fields being enhanced by a factor of up to 2.5 over the average field are observed. This factor is dependent on the gap length. A simple model based on charge carrier generation mainly by dissociation of ion pairs in the liquid bulk is used in the discussion of the observations. We can conceive of a volume of empty space to which matter is added, molecule by molecule, until the vacuum is transformed, in stages through low pressure gas, high pressure gas, liquid of low viscosity, liquid of high viscosity, to an amorphous solid. First assumptions might be that as the phase changes then so does the breakdown strength and breakdown mechanism. Yet the indications are that there is no sudden change in the breakdown strength as we go from gas phase to liquid phase at constant density.
