Specifically, the problem we aim to solve is: given a case and its statement of facts, what are the other cases that are closely related to it and may be used as resources to build arguments for the given case? The dataset was scraped and extracted from the LawPhil Project of the Arellano Law Foundation. To extract the suitable features for the models, inputs are first cleaned, tokenized and transformed into its dense vector representation. Thus, a Word2Vec model is first trained on the corpus of case laws between 1987–2013 for feature extraction. We used two configurations for our output space: predicting the cases taken from a pool of the top 500 and top 100 most cited cases. Our results show that it is challenging to obtain a good balance between precision and recall. Some model configurations achieve good recall at the expense of precision and vice versa. In addition to CNN and LSTM, we also explored a Doc2Vec model based on trained to find the cases that are most similar semantically to a particular case. Sensitivity analysis is performed regarding the number of recommended similar cases outputted by the Doc2Vec model its effect on recall. Finally, we also explore a problem that is a bit simpler than our primary objective in this paper: predicting the laws associated to a given case. With much less complexity, we expect and are able to show that our models perform relatively better in this problem.","PeriodicalId":36690,"journal":{"name":"Platonic Investigations","volume":"23 1","pages":"886-891"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2019-10-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"83296517","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Existing works for automatic genre classification compute a set of features from the audio and design a classifier on top of it. Such models, in general, compute these features over a relatively long duration of the audio. In this paper, a residual neural network based model is proposed for genre classification which is trained on short clips of just 3 seconds duration. Also, traditional genre classification algorithms will assign a single genre to an audio clip. However, it is well established that different genres have overlapping characteristics. Considering this ambiguous nature of the genre, the model proposed in this work can assign three genre labels to a music clip, with each genre associated with some probability. The proposed model has an error rate of 18%, 9%, and 5.5% while predicting into top-1, top-2 and top-3 genres for a music clip respectively. We demonstrate in this work that the predictions made by the classifier align with the broader understood meaning of genre in a realistic setting.","PeriodicalId":36690,"journal":{"name":"Platonic Investigations","volume":"111 1","pages":"2063-2068"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2019-10-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"89373746","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Some carcasses of pigs that have died other than by slaughtering, called adulterated or double-dead meat, make their way to markets and get mixed up with legal and safe meat, only to be sold to unsuspecting consumers. These pose health hazards to meat handlers and consumers. One of the longtime practices in preventing the proliferation of double-dead meat in the markets is the manual inspection that analyzes the meat based on its organoleptic properties. This solution, however, is prone to limitations of subjectivity and human evaluation error. In this study, the proponents designed a system that will identify whether the meat sample is adulterated or not. The system is aimed at providing fast and accurate detection of double-dead meat using color and chemical determinants that is at least comparable to, or better than, humans. The application of the system can be utilized to replace the traditional human evaluation using electronic sensors as to avoid bias in the evaluation of the meat by different assessors as well as to eliminate the health risks on the meat inspectors and the consumers. The system utilizes three sensors: color sensor, methane sensor and pH level sensor. A microcontroller implements a logistic regression classifier. The model performs well, with an accuracy of 91.40% after validation, with an area of 0.95 under its ROC. When realized, the model has an accuracy of 93.18% compared to 84.09% of the human assessor's evaluation of the same meat samples.","PeriodicalId":36690,"journal":{"name":"Platonic Investigations","volume":"12 1","pages":"2099-2104"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2019-10-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"80612430","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The motivation for addressing this problem is the atrocious state of the disabled population in low and middle-income countries. Assistive devices can help ease the burden for many. However, currently, the assistive technology industry is extremely specialized and limited, typically designed for high-income settings. Moreover, available designs of assistive devices are seldom appropriate for all settings and are not suitable for the physical, social, and cultural environment of users. As a consequence, it has been found that up to 75% of assistive devices in low-resource settings are abandoned by users. This paper first identifies and analyses the scope and dimensions of this social problem, through reviewing the literature. It then suggests a technical solution for enhancing the performance of one low-tech assistive device, the crutch, by improving the design of the crutch shoe. An alternative design for a crutch shoe with improved performance on unpaved and non-cohesive surfaces is developed. The proposed design is compatible with existing canes and crutches as well as affordable to the low-income population. The suggested design was evaluated for its stability on uneven terrain by comparing its levels of ground displacement to conventional designs. Furthermore, this study calculates expect economic impact and market characteristics of the enhanced design.","PeriodicalId":36690,"journal":{"name":"Platonic Investigations","volume":"1 1","pages":"1717-1724"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2019-10-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"89566050","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Estimating aircraft states is a challenging problem, especially if the aircraft is a light and small Unmanned Aerial Vehicle (UAV), under the effect of strong winds. In those cases, the energy consumption can vary in such a way that it would directly compromise the mission. This paper proposes a method for estimating the wind velocity and direction based on how much energy the aircraft needs to fly a predetermined path. The energy is calculated using a closed-form energy model based on the dynamic of the movement, the principles of superposition, and energy conservation. The model considers each parcel of energy consumed separately in the equation, even the drag force that is normally despised in other models. This model should be extended for other types of multi-rotors because it is a function of quadcopter parameters. The model has been validated against another model published recently in the literature. Here the model is applied in a reverse form. The consumed energy estimated by a Kalman Filter is applied as an input to the model such that the velocity of the quadcopter relative to the mass of air is calculated. That data and information supplied only by the flight computer allow determining the wind parameters. Despite the noisy characteristics of wind, it works properly, and the results demonstrate the feasibility of the proposed approach.","PeriodicalId":36690,"journal":{"name":"Platonic Investigations","volume":"48 1 1","pages":"234-239"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2019-10-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"91367422","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

These people may not be able to move their arms or legs but they can certainly think. If their ability to think and make decisions can be utilized in decision making situations and also if they can further be included in industrial automation structure, they will no longer be burden rather they will become man-power to the society. One of the major challenges of involving these people in such processes is making a low cost device that is affordable by the mass, made with locally available components and also interprets the person's choice accurately. As these people are physically disable, comprehending their electroencephalogram (EEG) signal for blink detection can be an effective solution for translating their choices. EEG-based controlling devices are mobile and can serve as powerful aids for severely disabled people in their daily life. In this work, a low cost EEG sensor is made with readily available components and a framework is developed to detect voluntary eye blinks. A graphical user interface (GUI) is also developed which is suitable for the impaired person. The eye blinks of the person act as bridge between a set of choices pointed in the GUI and his/her selection interest and thus help the person control home appliances, wheel chair and even computer without depending on others.","PeriodicalId":36690,"journal":{"name":"Platonic Investigations","volume":"39 1","pages":"1937-1941"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2019-10-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"89763474","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

It is observed that the classic person independent FER system does not produce satisfactory results on Indian Classical Dance specific dataset due to the different ways of representation of facial expressions in real life and in performing arts. This is our effort to introduce a novel application where classic FER systems (person independent) are used to classify the facial expressions used in Indian Classical Dance. For the person independent system, Local Binary Patterns (LBP) are used as facial feature descriptors and the expressions are classified using Linear SVM. Japanese Female Facial Expressions (JAFFE) is used as a standard dataset to test the FER system and a comparable recognition rate of 83.7% is achieved. The same system is then tested on our dance specific dataset. A rule-based person-dependent system is designed for classification with the help of geometric distances between facial components. The facial component-based approach achieves the recognition rate of 85% on our dataset with 7 classes. This work shows promising results and triggers the exploration of the use of facial expression analysis in performing arts.","PeriodicalId":36690,"journal":{"name":"Platonic Investigations","volume":"63 1","pages":"2496-2501"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2019-10-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"87209459","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
