This study examined the efficacy of integrating the Blackboard platform and face-to-face classroom learning in a blended learning model for teaching writing skills to Saudi EFL university students via amalgamating the advantages offered by both online platforms and face-to-face learning. The study adopted a mixed-methods research design, incorporating qualitative as well as quantitative methodologies. It employed a survey methodology, utilizing a questionnaire to identify the students' perceptions with respect to the use of blended learning in the context of writing instruction. In addition, interviews were conducted to determine the students' level of acceptance and willingness to participate in blended learning. The findings indicate that the participants exhibited a predominantly favorable attitude towards blended learning of writing. Furthermore, they demonstrated an awareness of the interconnectedness between engaging the Blackboard platform and face-to-face learning in writing instruction. The positive perspectives and receptiveness exhibited by the students towards blended learning underscore its potential to cultivate engagement, collaboration, and enhanced learning outcomes of writing instruction. The empirical evidence obtained from this study serves as a strong impetus for educational institutions and EFL instructors to utilize blended learning in writing instruction.","PeriodicalId":36638,"journal":{"name":"International Journal of English Language and Literature Studies","volume":"76 2","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2023-12-21","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"138951442","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Instead of advocating Arabs and demystifying their identity against the western stereotypical misconceptions, Soueif (2000) and Faqir (2007) represent Arabs as backward, passive, and violent terrorists, as evident in their novels. Thus, the study explains how those Arab diasporic writers adopt the western stance against Arabs by enhancing and highlighting the image of Arabs as different from the rest of the globe at the cost of Arabs and in favor of the West. The study deploys Said's Orientalism to read the narratives under discussion, highlighting that such narratives misrepresent how Arabs think, behave, and feel to gain some plausibility and popularity in the West (Occident). Soueif and Faqir, we argue, sacrifice the ethics of loyalty and belonging to Arabs in favor of assimilating with the West and gaining its admiration, which resulted in creating a very inaccurate portrait of Arabs. The study reveals the potential reasons of such unethical behaviors, emphasizing that falsifying the reality of the Arab World by some Arab diasporic writers should never be the optimal way to assimilate with the West or cope with its expectations.","PeriodicalId":36638,"journal":{"name":"International Journal of English Language and Literature Studies","volume":"131 10","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2023-12-21","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"138953581","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

This paper studied the recent updates and changes that happened due to the widespread of modern technology, focusing on the influence of digital tools, artificial intelligence, social media, and other new media platforms. Quantitative and qualitative data collection methods were used in this research to bring the impact of modern technology on new language development, language diversity, and communication designs. The data for this research was collected from those Indians who migrated to Western countries for higher studies and better job opportunities, as well as from their friends and family members. They regularly connect to friends and family members over digital platforms, which may result in the evolution of their traditional language changes. The findings of this research highlight the dynamic relationship between digital interactions, current language, and digital culture. Today, communication and interaction do not have any barriers because of the evolution of global language into a digital metamorphosis. More than syntax symbols and modern nuances communicate in digital platforms. The change in language leads to cultural changes, and it is an important area to study and evaluate the modern changes in our communication medium. This research also provides valuable information in the field of language and technology and paves the way for further research in this rapidly developing field.","PeriodicalId":36638,"journal":{"name":"International Journal of English Language and Literature Studies","volume":"88 19","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2023-12-05","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"138600365","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Uniquely, it introduces social media platforms as a new predictor to vocabulary attrition. The study examined a population of EFL (English as a Foreign Language) Saudi English major learners from two different universities in Saudi Arabia over three distinct periods, spanning both during and after the cessation of formal education. The participants were initially taught using traditional teaching methods in a reading course. Upon completing their formal education, they were included in WhatsApp and Telegram groups, where they were engaged in bimonthly language activities, with special focus on vocabulary, for eighteen months to enhance their exposure to the vocabulary they had studied during their undergraduate studies as English language majors. The findings revealed that participants reported six opportunities to use English vocabulary (in online games, while browsing the internet, in WhatsApp and Telegram groups, in watching movies, in private courses, and in college courses) with varying levels of interaction. The levels declined at a relatively slow rate, especially after graduation. Notably, the use of social media platforms demonstrated a more effective retention of productive vocabulary, underscoring these platforms as potent predictors of language attrition.","PeriodicalId":36638,"journal":{"name":"International Journal of English Language and Literature Studies","volume":"83 2","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2023-12-05","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"138598198","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Proficiency in reading holds great importance as it serves as an educational tool and pathway for acquiring knowledge and skills and promotes the development of cognitive, linguistic, and physical abilities and aptitudes. The present study investigated the effect of active learning strategies on the development of Arabic oral reading skills for low-achieving second-grade students in remote areas of Jordan. The study population comprised 170 students, out of which a sample comprising 20 low-achieving second-grade pupils (11 females and nine males), was purposefully selected based on grades (less than 60%) in the Arabic language course. A pre-experimental design involving a one-group pretest-posttest research was used. The study identified 17 oral reading skills that the students needed to master. Over seven weeks, the participants were taught using active learning strategies, including visiting guests, learning by playing, telling the story, and peer education. The results showed statistically significant differences in the students' levels of oral reading skills due to the use of active learning strategies. The study recommends paying greater attention to the basics of teaching Arabic, particularly for students in the first three grades. There is also a need to apply active learning strategies to develop oral reading skills for students' reading proficiency, as weaknesses in these skills can lead to academic failure and negatively impact their lives.","PeriodicalId":36638,"journal":{"name":"International Journal of English Language and Literature Studies","volume":"95 4","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2023-12-05","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"138600072","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The current study looks at the possibility of including an English for Specific Purposes (henceforth ESP) course in high school tracks. It also looks into factors such as the outcomes of ESP-trained general English instructors, appropriate materials and skills for teaching ESP, the pedagogical environment and teaching approaches of ESP, as well as the future of general English as ESP becomes more common. Through an eleven-item Likert scale survey and structured interviews conducted with four English language teachers, 135 English foreign language teachers were surveyed, and quantitative and qualitative data were collected. According to most participants, the inclusion of ESP in high school tracks will provide students with the vocabulary and structure they need to succeed in college. While ESP is considered an extension of general English (henceforth GE), its pedagogical environment and teaching approach differ, which means teachers should be trained in science, medical terms, and pedagogical aspects of ESP instruction to motivate their students and make them more enthusiastic about the subjects they will study in professional colleges after they have completed high school.","PeriodicalId":36638,"journal":{"name":"International Journal of English Language and Literature Studies","volume":"115 15","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2023-11-07","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"135541476","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

This empirical study aimed to thoroughly investigate the multifaceted aspects of negotiation of meaning and identify the influential factors shaping this process during classroom interactions within an English for Medical Purposes (EMP) class at a medical college in Saudi Arabia. Employing an eclectic qualitative methodology that incorporates key principles of Linguistic Ethnography, this research presented a comprehensive analysis of data collected throughout the entire fall semester of the academic year 2020/2021. The rich dataset stemmed from meticulous observations of ten EMP classroom sessions. Findings from this study shed light on the teacher's strategic employment of various techniques, including confirmation checks, comprehension checks, clarification requests, and other forms of repairs, to effectively negotiate meaning in the classroom. Moreover, the investigation underscores the significance of factors such as familiarity with topics, students' proficiency levels, and nature of tasks undertaken, as critical determinants influencing the negotiation of meaning in classroom interaction. By emphasizing the positive and essential role of negotiation of meaning, this study underscores its contribution to optimizing input comprehensibility and enhancing overall classroom interactions.","PeriodicalId":36638,"journal":{"name":"International Journal of English Language and Literature Studies","volume":"6 4","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2023-11-02","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"135975072","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The study adopts a functional translation approach as a theoretical framework that serves to determine the purpose of employing different strategies at the macro-level. This examination helps to evaluate whether consumer-oriented texts lean towards a TT reader, i.e., having more communicative and domestication translation rather than semantic and foreignization translation. The results reveal that both semantic and communicative translation frequently occur in the general translation procedures used in the data of GCC in-flight magazines, which are used as a data sample of consumer-oriented texts. As for cultural strategies, the analysis shows that domestication is the predominant cultural strategy when translating these texts, occurring in around 98% of total cultural procedures.","PeriodicalId":36638,"journal":{"name":"International Journal of English Language and Literature Studies","volume":"60 2","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2023-10-29","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"136134826","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Butterfly (1988) has been widely discussed in terms of postcolonialism, Asian representations, and the intersection of gender and race. The feminist connotation embodied in the work, however, is largely either ignored or criticized. Employing poststructuralist feminist thoughts of Luce Irigaray, Teresa de Lauretis, and Judith Butler, as well as camp feminist research, the article attempts to illuminate the play’s undertones that defy patriarchal construction, gaze, and othering of women’s bodies in dominant culture and knowledge. It shows that the characterization of Comrade Chin, Renee, and other main female characters in M. Butterfly confront stereotypical representations of women with subversive ones. Moreover, the play camps or plays with fetishized womanhood in an excessive and exaggerated manner. In this way, it lays bare the presumed feminity as an artifice produced via the male gaze, freeing female beholders from identifying with the object and watched position and allowing them to return the watching gaze as a subject.","PeriodicalId":36638,"journal":{"name":"International Journal of English Language and Literature Studies","volume":"29 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2023-10-29","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"136136178","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

In several of his novels, Updike describes a series of problems that modern people encounter at work, family, and feeling, and explores ways and means to overcome these problems. Chinese and foreign scholars have explored this issue from different perspectives and achieved certain results, but few scholars have studied it from the perspective of memory and imagination. Memory and imagination are an active exploration of this issue by Updike, but they are usually overlooked by researchers. This paper tries to use Marcuse’s discourse on memory and imagination to explore the survival difficulties encountered by the characters in Updike’s three novels, analyze how the characters in the works use memory and imagination as a way to get rid of the predicament, and explore the impact of memory and imagination on reality. Through analysis, this paper hopes to explore the answers to the above questions.","PeriodicalId":36638,"journal":{"name":"International Journal of English Language and Literature Studies","volume":"38 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2023-10-12","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"136014394","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
