Or perhaps it is more accurate to say that foreign language professionals recognize the need for more oral practice, but do not have at their disposal a convenient means to provide it. An online oral practice/assessment platform, Speak Everywhere, has been developed to fill this void. It allows instructors without special computer knowledge to quickly create video-based speaking exercises and quizzes for their students to work on outside the classroom. The instructor can access the oral productions that the students submit to the system, and grade them or give individual feedback on them either in text or audio or both. Using its flexible and easy-to-use authoring sub-system, it is possible to create exercises of various formats (e.g. Q&A, repeat after the model, structure drills, role-play, and oral reading). Editor's Note: The following essay presents an online project developed by the author, outlining its genesis and its functionality. He also refers to studies involving implementation of the tool in various language settings. The IALLT Journal encourages submissions which review the software and/or present research involving the use of this or similar tools to support the teaching and learning of languages","PeriodicalId":366246,"journal":{"name":"The IALLT Journal of Language Learning Technologies","volume":"1 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2013-04-15","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"128600075","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

However, exposure to authentic materials can alsoresult in reactions of anxiety and frustration on the part of the foreignlanguage learner. By providing access to authentic content online, thepedagogical benefits of the use of authentic material can be maximized,while some of the drawbacks inherent in such use can be mitigated. Inthis article, we discuss how the use of online technologies offersopportunities to provide access to authentic material that is engaging,appropriate, and affordable. By using the multi-media capabilities of aCourse Management System (CMS) to deliver authentic materialsonline, instructors of French, Italian, and Chinese were able to bothpositively impact student attitudes toward the subject matter and todesign learning and evaluation activities that increased studentengagement. We find that using technology to deliver authentic materials can help alleviate student anxiety associated with being exposed to authentic foreign language. Furthermore, students becomeactive participants in the learning process and are able to employ theirown learning style. We conclude by discussing the limitations andimplications of our findings and making suggestions for futureresearch.","PeriodicalId":366246,"journal":{"name":"The IALLT Journal of Language Learning Technologies","volume":"11 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2012-10-15","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"132752512","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Drawing on politeness theory, particularly Brown andLevinson (1987)’s taxonomy of politeness strategies, this studyanalyzed the wiki-mediated discourse of one collaborative writinggroup in a Chinese EFL context. This particular writing groupconsisted of three EFL college students at a southwestern university inChina. This article examined specifically how this small group activelyengaged in social interaction by adopting politeness strategies duringasynchronous communication in a wiki “Discussion” module. Resultsrevealed that this small group used three types of politeness strategies,i.e. positive, negative, and bald on record skillfully, to establishfriendship, solidarity and respect while completing their collaborativewriting tasks smoothly and efficiently. This study validates the value oflinguistic politeness strategies in the analyses of social interactionoccurring in computer-mediated discourse and also suggests somepedagogical implications.","PeriodicalId":366246,"journal":{"name":"The IALLT Journal of Language Learning Technologies","volume":"64 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2012-10-15","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"116163278","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

I hope you will find it informative and of interest. The primary aim of The Econometrics Journal is the publication of econometric research with a standard of intellectual rigour and academic standing similar to that in the top field journals in econometrics. It is a general journal covering all areas of econometrics and encourages the submission of first‐class papers in macro‐, micro‐ and financial econometrics. As an international Journal, the professional skills and experience of a wide array of well established econometricians from top institutions worldwide is utilised to help in the selection process of research papers for publication. Recent editorial changes include the appointment of Michael Jansson (U.C. Berkeley) as Co‐Editor to replace Pierre Perron (Boston University) who completed his term as Co‐Editor and Andrew Patton (Duke University) as Co‐editor replacing Jianqing Fan (Princeton) on his taking up the position of Editor of Journal of Econometrics. Alexei Onatski (University of Cambridge) succeeds Robert Taylor (University of Essex) who completed his term as Assistant Editor and Book Reviews Editor who has taken up the position of Editor‐in‐Chief of Journal of Time Series Analysis. The Econometrics Journal is very grateful to Jianqing, Pierre and Robert for their excellent service. respectively; 2011‐08 and 2011‐10 figures respectively in parentheses. I would like to take this opportunity to thank all Co‐Editors, Associate Editors of and referees for the journal for their continuing efforts and support without which these improvements would not have occurred. Turn‐around times continue to improve. For decisions on all submissions the mean for time to first decision in 2012‐13 was 43 days down from 50 in 2011‐12.","PeriodicalId":366246,"journal":{"name":"The IALLT Journal of Language Learning Technologies","volume":"55 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2012-04-15","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"127295281","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
