The study was carried out in three phases: scoping study for first two months, following which we applied participant observation for a month each in three homes, the three months following that, we conducted in-depth interviews on a sample of 24 residents, 12 employees and managerial staff distributed across the three homes. The review highlights transitions in the Indian socioeconomic, cultural and value systems which espouse the need for quality institutional care for the elderly. The case study explores the decision-making dynamics of admission into a care home as well as the process of moving into a care home.","PeriodicalId":366070,"journal":{"name":"Indian Journal of Health Studies","volume":"74 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1900-01-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"114860866","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

It is one of the rare eastern Indic cultures, which incorporates lifestyle and serenity of oneself. In Baul philosophy, self-clarity means a practical picture of the mirroring the self, which can be realized and not explicitly empirically justified. People with Borderline Personality (BP) have an unstable sense of self leading to irritability, doubtfulness, and even self-harm. This lack of security leads to unsafe activities including multiple random relationships and sex, which includes a risk of sexually transmitted diseases. Self-compassion is a missing factor too. Since lifestyle is one primary element that impacts the psyche and the body, one with BP should try to modulate how one perceives oneself and others, in order to re-establish balance. The objective was to explore and understand BP through the lens of Baulism. Bauls have a penchant for selfstability and focus on humanism and kindness, while BP involves a sense of unstable self. Theoretically, it was found that there are chances for improvement regarding impulsivity and perceived vulnerability of persons with BP, if Baul practices are imbibed in one’s life. Further modules could be developed for developing practical awareness regarding the self, through Baul songs and philosophy, practice of Baul rituals and music.","PeriodicalId":366070,"journal":{"name":"Indian Journal of Health Studies","volume":"1 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1900-01-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"116081381","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Stresses of modern living and work life have induced several symptoms of psychopathology among people from various walks of life. Consequences of stress affects people psychologically, physiologically and behaviorally which adversely affects their work-life balance. The Sudharshan Kriya Pranayama of the ‘Art of Living’ center at Bengaluru, India is a potent and effective method to counterbalance the effects of stress and enhance wellness. An extremely unique yogic breathing practice is Sudharshan Kriya Yoga which involves various kinds of breathing patterns that alternate between slow and relaxing to quick and stimulating. One hundred senior officers of the Government of India of different Ministries / Departments participated in the experiential learning workshop at the Art of Living centre at Bengaluru for the programme ‘Building Competencies for Personal Excellence’ in 2021. The participants practiced the Sudharshan Kriya Yoga for about two months. The feedback from the officers were collected and the same were analysed. It was seen that due to the practice of Sudharshan Kriya Yoga the heightened flow of energy between the mind and the body led to stress reduction and wellness among the senior government officers. Through the practice of Sudharshan Kriya Yoga the RSA (Respiratory Sinus Arrhythmia) was enhanced by calming down the participants. Other notable impacts of Susharshan Kriya are better sleep quality, trauma reduction and cortisol (stress hormone) regulation in the body. The participants were less reactive to provocation and there were fewer instances of anger outbursts. Cognitive functioning was enhanced which led to a balanced approach to social and interpersonal relationships leading to better coping with occupational stress, greater subjective well-being, increase in wellness and better adaptation to the pressures and stressors of life.","PeriodicalId":366070,"journal":{"name":"Indian Journal of Health Studies","volume":"37 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1900-01-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"133657526","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

There being a lot of gaps regarding knowledge about HPV vaccination, its safety, efficacy and availability, the study was done to assess the effect of awareness programs in the acceptance of safe practices for prevention of cervical cancer. Using a longitudinal study design, a study was conducted among 152 B.Sc. nursing students of a tertiary care teaching hospital; using a researcher-made questionnaire. An awareness session was organized to educate them on cervical cancer prevention. The same questionnaire was re-administered as a post- test after a period of one month. Data collected was entered into Microsoft excel spreadsheet; analyzed using EpiInfo software. Data was represented using appropriate statistical tests; taking a p-value of < 0.05 as statistically significant. The mean-age of the study participants was 20.92 + 1.68 years. As few as15.1% knew that “HPV infection is generally asymptomatic”, pre-awareness session. There was considerable improvement in the knowledge regarding the symptoms of carcinoma of cervix post the awareness drive, results were was also statistically significant (p< 0.001). Similarly, their knowledge regarding various risk factors of carcinoma cervix, PAP smear test as a screening tool, also had a marked improvement, post the awareness session. 52.6% were hesitant to take the HPV vaccine pre-awareness session, whereas 73.6% agreed for the same after the awareness program. Although prior to the awareness drive their knowledge about cervical cancer was poor, but there was a significant improvement in their level of knowledge after it. Thus awareness programs can be conducted to inculcate safe lifestyle practices. For wider dissemination, more numbers of awareness drives and at frequent intervals should be done.","PeriodicalId":366070,"journal":{"name":"Indian Journal of Health Studies","volume":"32 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1900-01-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"115694595","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The purpose of this paper is to empirically investigate the effect of music therapy on perceived stress and professional quality of life (burnout, secondary traumatic stress, compassion satisfaction) among them. Data were collected through a structured questionnaire from a sample of 41 nurses working in a private multi-speciality hospital, in Hyderabad, India. The hypotheses were tested using paired sample t-tests. Perceived stress was measured using the Perceived Stress Scale (Sheldon Cohen). Burnout, Secondary stress, and Compassion Satisfaction were measured by the Professional Quality of Life scale - ProQOL5. Nurses in the experimental group were given live group music therapy in the form of group drumming improvisation for 30 mins followed by directed imagery and music for relaxation for a duration of 15 mins. The script of the imagery was chosen to be generic and safe for everyone to evoke positive and pleasant experiences. The music used for music and imagery was live raga improvisation in the Raga Brindavani Sarang. The findings showed that perceived stress, burnout, and secondary traumatic stress significantly decreased in the experimental group, confirming the positive effect of music therapy on an organizational sample such as nurses. The current research suggests how music and music therapy can be used as a tool for enhancing and maintaining well-being at the workplace. Implications of this study can be extended to see the effects of music therapy with an increased number of sessions and on other organizational samples like doctors, other medical staff, and technicians. Although the study's findings reveal the positive impact of music therapy with nurses, it cannot be generalized to all nurses in India, since the results and sampling area is limited to the hospital where the study was conducted in Hyderabad, India","PeriodicalId":366070,"journal":{"name":"Indian Journal of Health Studies","volume":"37 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1900-01-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"122319031","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Since diabetes is a chronic illness without a total cure, it can only be managed effectively. Having a lifelong condition impacts all aspects of one’s life- the psychological, behavioural, and social. This necessitates the need to strengthen the psychosocial aspects on an individual as patients feel overwhelmed and stressed out to make necessary lifestyle changes and sustain in health promoting behaviour. Previous research suggests that patients might experience diabetes related distress or feel frustrated with the burden of diabetes self-care. Providing knowledge about different aspects of diabetes and its management along with strong social support aides patients in adapting to the condition in an easier and less stressful manner.","PeriodicalId":366070,"journal":{"name":"Indian Journal of Health Studies","volume":"43 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1900-01-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"125924386","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Its higher prevalence during adolescence is often seen as a form of defense against the demands for greater autonomy and responsibility during this period of transition and often linked with stress as the key variable. However, empirical studies attribute this to the changing patters of family dynamics during adolescence. Whereas, in contrast to this, the psychiatric morbidity model suggests that, eating disorders are seen as manifestation of psychological disturbances such as major depression and obsessivecompulsive disorders, at some point of time, as these disorders are almost three times more common among patients, particularly, with anorexia nervosa. Whereas, addictive models of eating disorders suggest that, eating disorders are driven by compulsion to eat or avoid eating in spite of either satiation or deprivation, respectively in obesity and anorexia nervosa, whereas sociocultural models emphasize social and familial expectations as well as social desirability as the driving force. Psychoanalytic models on the other hand focus on the underlying unconscious motives at the core of eating disorders, and cognitive models, on the underlying thoughts and belief systems, whereas, the biological models have attributed eating disorders to genetics and biochemistry. The article attempts to critically evaluate these prevalent contemporary models of eating disorders.","PeriodicalId":366070,"journal":{"name":"Indian Journal of Health Studies","volume":"2 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1900-01-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"131807488","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

This has medical, legal and psychosocial implications. Netherlands is the country which legalised the process followed by few other countries. Cross-cultural acceptance and implementation of euthanasia is something that looks extremely difficult because it involves a number of cultural factors. It is closely associated with the connotation each culture gives to the concept of ‘death’. There are psychological, social, religious, political, medical and legal aspects associated with euthanasia or assisted death. The sociocultural variations across three continents, viz, Asia, Europe and Africa are projected. The ancient Indian concept of euthanasia and the contemporary social and legal reactions to euthanasia are discussed in this article.","PeriodicalId":366070,"journal":{"name":"Indian Journal of Health Studies","volume":"44 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1900-01-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"126868064","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
