The memoirs, written in English and told as bedtime stories to O'Brien's Turkish-American children in the 1950s and 1960s, provide a unique lens on the early history of the Turkish republic and offer a new way of thinking about the memory of and nostalgia for this period that contrasts from memoirs of both state-centered elites and prominent dissidents. The article argues that the memoirs can be used as a way to reconsider the function of nostalgic remembrances of this period amongst Turkish immigrants and exiles, and as an example of how harsh experiences of this period were softened in the search for a usable past.","PeriodicalId":36583,"journal":{"name":"Journal of the Ottoman and Turkish Studies Association","volume":"7 1","pages":"237 - 257"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2021-04-29","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"44905742","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

By examining the case of bonding, separation, and separation-related emotions as reflected in Ottoman panegyric and love poetry and instantiated in Ottoman social structures, we will advance a hypothesis that Ottoman culture scripts not only social behaviors but the internal architecture of the brain and consequent unmediated \"emotional\" reactions to real-world events. If brain-patterning behaviors and their consequences can be identified and linked, this opens up possibilities for evidence-based histories of emotions and emotional communities that would enhance fruitful exchanges among neuroscientists, psychologists, social scientists, and humanities scholars. Moreover, we will suggest that a humanistic approach to \"brain science\" might constitute a useful theoretical platform for the emerging history of emotions field in Ottoman cultural studies. This essay constitutes a theoretical preface to a forthcoming large-scale digital text-analysis project already in its initial stages.","PeriodicalId":36583,"journal":{"name":"Journal of the Ottoman and Turkish Studies Association","volume":"7 1","pages":"147 - 174"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2021-04-29","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"46508829","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
