Contrary to the mono-sensor systems, the effects of frequency selective fading may be alleviated in the multi-sensor systems without using a wireless overhead due to the space diversity. A modulation scheme is proposed which allows to improve the reliability of data transmission in fading multipath environments and perform an accurate channel equalization with a minimal excess bandwidth and no substantial training. The numerical study confirms the efficiency of this method in such bandwidth expensive applications as wireless asynchronous transfer mode (WATM) networking.","PeriodicalId":365086,"journal":{"name":"1999 2nd IEEE Workshop on Signal Processing Advances in Wireless Communications (Cat. A new higher-order cyclostationarity based approach is proposed for the narrow-band coherent signals impinging on a uniform linear array. In the proposed method, by incorporating the subarray scheme with a linear prediction technique, the computational cost is reduced and the resolution capability is improved, and the difficulty of choice of the optimal lag is alleviated.","PeriodicalId":365086,"journal":{"name":"1999 2nd IEEE Workshop on Signal Processing Advances in Wireless Communications (Cat. Although the symbols are assumed to belong to a finite set, we use this prior information only partially. The rationale is that under some precise circumstances the plain deterministic maximum likelihood method seldom, if ever, exhibits local minima, while a full use of the finite alphabet property is more efficient, but introduces numerous local minima. The use of a partial information allows to considerably improve the performance in terms of symbol estimation without adding a new local minimum. Our algorithm combines a least-squares estimation of the channels and a constrained minimisation of a quadratic criterion for the symbols. If the data are noise-free, it is shown that the global minimum is attained only for the true filter and symbols. Furthermore, me propose a growing window technique which permits to evaluate whether the actual solution is a global minimum or not. In the second case, our technique permits to escape from this local minimum. Numerical simulations illustrate the accuracy of our algorithm in the presence of noise.","PeriodicalId":365086,"journal":{"name":"1999 2nd IEEE Workshop on Signal Processing Advances in Wireless Communications (Cat. We present a novel frequency-domain approach that employs second order spectral statistics of the observations and the users signatures. Unlike other methods, which are based on time-domain analysis, no particular assumptions are made about the support of the mixing channels, except that they have finite length. Since signatures correlations, rather that signatures themselves, are used, the proposed estimation is independent of users delays. Although performance does depend on the users-signatures, signatures orthogonality is not required.","PeriodicalId":365086,"journal":{"name":"1999 2nd IEEE Workshop on Signal Processing Advances in Wireless Communications (Cat. Closed-form block blind equalizers are attractive, even if they are suboptimal, since they can serve to initialize them. But they can perform better in time-varying contexts, that is on very short data blocks. The authors focused mainly on PSK modulations, including MSK and QPSK. The proposed algorithms are based on known instantaneous properties of such modulations.","PeriodicalId":365086,"journal":{"name":"1999 2nd IEEE Workshop on Signal Processing Advances in Wireless Communications (Cat. In this paper, a user identification algorithm (UIA) is proposed that further processes each estimated overall channel response by a bank of matched filters of user signature sequences followed by a comparator to identify each detected symbol sequence with the associated user. Then some simulation results are presented to support the efficacy of the proposed UIA. Finally, some conclusions are provided.","PeriodicalId":365086,"journal":{"name":"1999 2nd IEEE Workshop on Signal Processing Advances in Wireless Communications (Cat. With the use of a super short training sequence, the initial space-time adaptive filtering vector composed of two mutually orthogonal components is calculated by using a projection-based filter optimization technique. The adaptive filter optimization based on the pre-optimized initial weight vector is implemented to efficiently suppress the multiuser access interference in the filtering procedure. In contrast to the blind space-time rake processing, the computation efficiency exhibited in the suggested approach is achieved by implementing the linear optimization for the filtering vector in reduced-dimensional (or full-dimensional) space-time complex vector spaces instead of using eigenvector-based processing, in which the optimization of the filtering vector in full-dimensional data vector space is required.","PeriodicalId":365086,"journal":{"name":"1999 2nd IEEE Workshop on Signal Processing Advances in Wireless Communications (Cat. In this case, many of the array processing methods based on the point source assumption produce poor performance. This paper highlights the behavior of subspace-based methods in such scenarios. A generalization of the MUSIC location algorithm to more realistic propagation models is derived, taking into account a parametric distribution of the angular density power. Moreover, this work proposes and motivates the use of linear prediction methods as an alternative for high resolution bearing estimation in presence of angular spreading. Indeed, the deconvolution of an auto-regressive spectrum permits one to obtain both the direction of arrival and the angular spread of the assumed parametric shape. A linear prediction method, optimally applied to a \"Lorenz\" shape of the angular distribution is also implemented. In fact, it seems that a Lorenz shape matches better experimental results than Gaussian or uniform ones.","PeriodicalId":365086,"journal":{"name":"1999 2nd IEEE Workshop on Signal Processing Advances in Wireless Communications (Cat. Minimum output energy (MOE) detection structurally allows blind adaptation but can be severely degraded from the optimal performance under mismatch situations. We propose to combine these two techniques so that close to optimal performance can be achieved without the use of a training sequence while mitigating the effect of error propagation. To achieve this goal, a quadratic inequality constraint is also incorporated. A recursive least squares (RLS) implementation of the proposed robust decision feedback equalizer is derived. Simulation results that illustrate the performance of the proposed detector as compared with standard MOE and DFE detectors are presented.","PeriodicalId":365086,"journal":{"name":"1999 2nd IEEE Workshop on Signal Processing Advances in Wireless Communications (Cat. Globecom/Comm. Theory Mini-Conference, Sydney, Australia, 1998) as a blind equalization technique for combating intersymbol interference in single-user systems. In this paper we extend this concept for the blind separation and equalization of multiple users in presence of intersymbol interference. The proposed criterion and algorithm can be viewed as a generalization of CMA in the sense that any constant modulus signal produced at the processor's output satisfies the criterion. An LMS-type algorithm is derived and compared with the CMA in the context of multiuser space-time equalization. An enhanced method for the decorrelation of multiuser signals is also presented as part of the proposed space-time equalizer.","PeriodicalId":365086,"journal":{"name":"1999 2nd IEEE Workshop on Signal Processing Advances in Wireless Communications (Cat.
