The films were prepared under different conditions (pH and solution concentration), and measurements were carried out in air and in a liquid cell. Both the doping level and fabrication conditions affect the POEA film morphology and the interactions of the atomic force microscopy (AFM) tip with the polymer molecules. For example, a mapping of the forces indicates the presence of conducting islands surrounded by a less conductive matrix in POEA and PANI films, with the conducting islands being characterized by the presence of double-layer forces. The conducting islands are further visualized via transmission electron microscopy (TEM) pictures. At pH 5, POEA appears completely dedoped where PANI can preserve some of its conducting character, and this is confirmed in electron paramagnetic resonance (EPR) measurements.","PeriodicalId":364651,"journal":{"name":"2005 12th International Symposium on Electrets","volume":"2 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2005-09-11","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"125018726","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Three kinds of relaxation peaks (/spl alpha/, /spl rho/ and /spl tau/ peaks) were observed in TSDC spectra above room temperature. By varying polarization field, it has been identified that a peak is attributed to the motion of chain segment, /spl rho/ peak is originated from the release of space charge, and /spl tau/ peak is corresponding to liquid-liquid transition. With the increase of BA component, three peaks all move to lower temperature, indicating that flexible side group of butyl acrylate not only has an effect of plasticization on the glass transition and the liquid-liquid transition, but also makes the trap depth shallower and the occurrence of detrapping process easier. In addition, the increase of BA component has a remarkable effect on the intensity of /spl tau/ peak, showing a special polarization mechanism for the liquid-liquid transition.","PeriodicalId":364651,"journal":{"name":"2005 12th International Symposium on Electrets","volume":"7 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2005-09-11","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"122086792","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Whereas organic semiconductors are widely investigated, much less attention is paid for the search on organic gate dielectrics. Space-charge and dipole electrets offer a huge potential as gate dielectrics in organic field effect transistors. An example is the development of a nonvolatile organic field effect transistor memory based on fullerenes as molecular semiconductor and polyvinylalcohol as space-charge electret. In polyvinylalcohol, most probably mobile ions are the charge carriers that are trapped with long retention times. The memory element is characterized by a large metastable hysteresis in the transfer characteristics, the drain source current versus gate voltage. Improvements and even further going applications are possible by the use of better space-charge electrets.","PeriodicalId":364651,"journal":{"name":"2005 12th International Symposium on Electrets","volume":"67 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2005-09-11","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"132494818","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

A strong discrepancy between porous (closed-porous) polypropylene (PP) and fibrous (open-porous) teflon PTFE has been recognized concerning the obtainable polarization and the related piezoelectric d/sub 33/ coefficients. The present study aims to clarify the reasons for the poor charge separation ability of fibrous materials when exposed to electrical breakdown in their air voids. It will be demonstrated that a breakdown-induced conductivity hinders the formation of a large internal polarization by mutual charge compensation and therewith accounts for the obtainable low piezoelectric d/sub 33/ coefficients in fibrous materials. It will be shown that this limitation can be overcome by utilizing a sandwich structure of two FEP charge blocking layers incorporating a fibrous PTFE film.","PeriodicalId":364651,"journal":{"name":"2005 12th International Symposium on Electrets","volume":"32 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2005-09-11","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"132942734","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Additionally, dipole electrets may even provide functionalities to such devices, like permanently polarized gate dielectrics for nonvolatile memories as well as pyro- or piezoelectric OFETs. Organic thin film transistors in top-contact geometry with pentacene as semiconductor and double layers of a ferroelectric polymer electret poly(vinylidene-fluoride tetrafluoroethylene hexafluoropropylene) and the polymer poly(vinyl cinnamate) as gate dielectric are shown. The electret is a terpolymer of vinylidene fluoride, trifluoroethylene and hexafluoropropylene with a high dielectric constant /spl epsiv/=10 at 1 MHz. The transistors show large intrinsic field effect mobility's in the range of /spl mu//sub i/=1 cm/sup 2//Vs and a large ratio of on- to off-current of about 10/sup 5/. Four peaks have been identified at -140, 0,110 and 160/spl deg/C. With the help of different techniques, it was possible to identify possible molecular processes responsible of the radiative recombination of trapped charge carriers. The peak at -140/spl deg/C has been associated with the /spl beta//sub 1/ relaxation (carboxyl groups). The peak at 0/spl deg/C can be related to charge carriers stored in traps at 0.36 eV, which are possibly stimulated by the /spl beta//sub 2/ relaxation. The third peak (110/spl deg/C) is to the /spl alpha/ relaxation. At 160/spl deg/C, it is possible to observe the fourth TL-glow peak, which could be related to the movement of the crystallites as a whole entity.","PeriodicalId":364651,"journal":{"name":"2005 12th International Symposium on Electrets","volume":"4 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2005-09-11","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"125809246","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Charge stability and its dynamic characteristic for ETFE after constant voltage corona charging at different temperatures were studied by the measurements of isothermal surface potential decay, the analysis of open-circuit Thermally Stimulated Discharge (TSD) current spectra, as well as thermal pulse technique. The comparison of the charge stability of ETFE and that of several important electret materials was investigated. It is found that the charge stability of ETFE electret is very good and the stability of negatively charged ETFE is better than that of positively charged ETFE. Charge storage life-time can be obviously improved after a reasonable heating treatment process. According to initial rise method, the activation energy of positive- and negative-charged ETFE electrets have been estimated. The mean charge depths of positive- and negative-charged ETFE electrets after the corona charging at room temperature are both near the free surface. With the rise of the temperature, the mean charge depths shifts to the bulk from the free surface, and at the same time, the charge density of the sample is reduced. Our study results also point out that the transport of detrapped charges for ETFE electret is controlled by fast retrapping effect.","PeriodicalId":364651,"journal":{"name":"2005 12th International Symposium on Electrets","volume":"1 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2005-09-11","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"129526374","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
