This study offers a qualitative synthesis of literature and case studies spanning 2000–2025 to evaluate how sanctions affect major energy producers such as Russia, Iran, and Venezuela. The analysis reveals that sanctions disrupt energy supply chains, restrict access to foreign investment and advanced technologies, and constrain integration into global financial systems. Simultaneously, they trigger adaptive responses, including domestic innovation efforts, clandestine export practices, and new geopolitical alliances. A key finding is the paradox of sanctions in shaping energy transitions. While sender states, particularly in Europe, have accelerated renewable energy adoption to reduce their dependence on sanctioned fossil fuels, target states often experience technological stagnation and entrenched reliance on conventional hydrocarbons. Notably, sanctions have stimulated localized innovation in some contexts, such as Iran's refining technologies and Venezuela's shadow fleet logistics. The study also identifies gaps in current scholarship, especially regarding the long-term governance implications of sanctions, the emergence of parallel energy markets aligned with BRICS and OPEC+, and the uneven global distribution of green investments. By integrating political realism and social constructivism, the research highlights the dual character of sanctions as both coercive instruments and inadvertent catalysts of systemic energy change. These findings call for a more nuanced policy approach that balances geopolitical objectives with sustainable energy security.</div></div>","PeriodicalId":36449,"journal":{"name":"International Journal of Innovation Studies","volume":"9 3","pages":"Pages 246-261"},"PeriodicalIF":4.2,"publicationDate":"2025-07-10","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"144696927","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

We analyze the PITEC database, a panel of Spanish firms in manufacturing and service industries with data spanning the 2005–2013 period, which includes the Great Recession years, characterized by sharp demand reductions and increased industry turnover. The results show that: 1) downturns affect exploration more than exploitation, making the probability of firms being classified as exploratory pro-cyclical; 2) the impact of downturns is stronger among small and medium enterprises (SMEs) than among large companies; and 3) exporting companies seem to be less affected by the cycle in their choice between exploration and exploitation. These results contribute to a deeper understanding of how external shocks interact with internal firm characteristics to shape innovation pathways.</div></div>","PeriodicalId":36449,"journal":{"name":"International Journal of Innovation Studies","volume":"9 3","pages":"Pages 203-217"},"PeriodicalIF":4.2,"publicationDate":"2025-06-26","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"144588562","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Unlike conventional DT approaches that prioritize user needs and problem-solving, this research reframes innovation as a process of envisioning strategic values, interpreting emerging socio-cultural meanings, and materializing symbolic and emotional resonance through design. Drawing on a case study from the Chinese technology sector, this research demonstrates how organizations can initiate radical meaning innovation by aligning internal vision with external networks and by structuring interpretations to navigate ambiguity and abstraction. The findings underscore the interpretive and socio-culturally embedded nature of innovation, providing a clear and actionable pathway for firms to reframe product meanings beyond utility and functionality. This work contributes to the growing discourse on meaning-centered innovation and extends the application of DT toward culturally sensitive and strategically guided innovation practices.</div></div>","PeriodicalId":36449,"journal":{"name":"International Journal of Innovation Studies","volume":"9 3","pages":"Pages 231-245"},"PeriodicalIF":4.2,"publicationDate":"2025-06-13","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"144679688","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The information was obtained from a sample of 165 executives from the same number of companies through a survey based on a Likert scale from 1 to 5. Data processing was conducted using the structural equation model (SEM). The results indicate that companies practice limited collaborative work with stakeholders and other societal actors to implement Industry 4.0 technologies. Despite this, there is evidence of an association between implementing these technologies and business sustainability. The results confirm the findings of previous studies in companies in developed economies, where this relationship has become an excellent strategy to address the complex and uncertain challenges faced by companies today. Likewise, the study's results provide empirical evidence for managers in emerging economies to decide how to enhance their competitive capacity. Similarly, it provides new information to those responsible for public agencies in economic issues to design and guide public policy that contributes to improving business competitiveness.</div></div>","PeriodicalId":36449,"journal":{"name":"International Journal of Innovation Studies","volume":"9 3","pages":"Pages 218-230"},"PeriodicalIF":4.2,"publicationDate":"2025-06-06","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"144670290","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

This article introduces technological opportunism as an antecedent of green innovation adoption and examines government support and air quality as moderators. It considers the relationships between green innovation and cost performance, supplier trust, government legitimacy and public reputation. By analyzing both cross-sectional and longitudinal data, the results reveal that technological opportunism significantly contributes to green innovation adoption, with government support amplifying this effect. The interaction effect of air quality, however, presented contrasting results. While technology-sensing capability positively influences green innovation in low-pollution contexts, its effect diminishes in high-pollution scenarios. Conversely, technology-response capability has an insignificant positive effect on green innovation when air pollution is low but a significant positive effect when air pollution is high. The longitudinal study further corroborates that green innovation adoption enhances corporate image and reduces operational costs over time. Using data from COMPUSTAT spanning 1966 to 2020, including 25,392 observations, Tobin's Q is used as a measure of financial performance. Absorptive capacity, measured by the ratio of research and development expenses to total revenue, has a significant positive direct impact on both innovation and financial performance. However, innovation, represented by the natural logarithm of total intangible assets, has a negative influence on financial performance and mediates the positive relationship between absorptive capacity and financial performance. This reveals the suppressive role of innovation in the absorptive capacity-financial performance relationship. This challenges the conventional belief that innovation invariably leads to improved financial outcomes, highlighting the nuanced dynamics involved.
