Through an integrative review, 41 articles were identified, analyzed along three axes: a) teaching grammar in history, b) teaching Spanish grammar as a mother tongue and c) teaching Spanish grammar as a foreign language. In the first, it is shown that the teaching of school grammar from the late nineteenth century to the mid-twentieth century adopted a prescriptive approach. In the second, two lines of work were identified: the characterization of syntactic development in different groups of students and the treatment of grammar in order to support the acquisition of syntactic structures. In the latter axis, research focused on difficulties in the development of the verbal system and error analysis. From some stories of the Uruguayan author, the use of it as an investigative tool in the human condition is analyzed. In this questioning, in the light of the latest studies in cognitive sciences, it is revealed as fundamental to pay attention to the reading processes and the effects it causes in the reader. The aim of this research is to analyze the lexical availability of students and academics of an English pedagogy program at a regional university. This research has a mixed-method approach, and data was collected by applying a lexical availability test made of 8 centers of interest to a sample of 350 students and 25 professors. The results were analyzed through a qualitative and quantitative perspective, including inferential statistics in order to determine whether there was any relationship between the the variable years of education and the students and academics’ lexical availability. In the face of destructive potential, the joyful sense of Valparaíso rises as a form of resistance against adversity.
