O edifício, concebido como mosteiro da ordem de Cister, em fi nais do século XVI, transporta consigo vários séculos de história, mas cuja coerência arquitetónica, as suas múltiplas utilizações tenderam a diluir. Alvo de um recente projeto de reutilização multifuncional de habitação, turismo, lazer e saúde, depois de largas décadas de discussão sobre a inadequabilidade das instalações para uso hospitalar, o debate voltou-se para a salvaguarda do edifício, com novas funções, e para a defesa dos seus valores históricos e patrimoniais. La iconografía estuvo presente para la identificación de estas instituciones dentro del entramado urbano, mientras que la heráldica se utilizó como una extensión representativa de los patrocinadores. A ello se añadió la utilización de escrituras monumentales con grafías góticas y humanísticas y funciones identificativas y conmemorativas. Neto","doi":"10.37935/AION.V0I9.251","DOIUrl":"https://doi.org/10.37935/AION.V0I9.251","url":null,"abstract":"The modernist Art critic and Art historian Michael Fried was the fi rst invited speaker to the Lisbon Lectures in the Humanities, promoted by the School of Humanities of the University of Lisbon. Before presenting his conference ‘Facingness Meets Mindedness: On Manet’s Luncheon in the Studio and The Balcony’ regarding two paintings by Édouard Manet, Fried was also present in a fruitful group discussion with PhD students from Art History and Theory of Literature. The Art History doctoral candidates were able to present their questions, prepared beforehand in work sessions with Professor Pedro Lapa, regarding Professor Fried’s extensive body of work. By focusing mainly on his views as a critic, these notes by no means exhaust the matter, and will surely be be followed by more in-depth incursions of it. Many other matters came up during this discussion, such as Michael Fried’s historical investigations into Courbet, Manet, Caravaggio, and others. James","doi":"10.37935/AION.V0I9.246","DOIUrl":"https://doi.org/10.37935/AION.V0I9.246","url":null,"abstract":"My paper presents a critical discourse on African vernacular rooted imageries in the contemporary sculptures of Ntuli, the ideas they convey to viewers and how Africanness is indicated in each depiction produced between 2007 and 2016. I read Ntuli’s contemporary sculptures as African vernacular rooted because he appropriates in them cultural imageries from engagement with African contexts. Five images of his sculptures and installations were purposively selected for thematic and visual analysis. I adopt visual hermeneutics theory, formal analysis and cultural history methods for the reading of each work. The narrative reveals that Ntuli’s vernacular imageries reflects black South African men and a woman rooted in past and present socio-political events in South Africa. ELBLĄG BIENNALES OF SPATIAL FORMS IN 1960’S POLAND","authors":"Elżbieta Błotnicka-Mazur","doi":"10.37935/AION.V0I9.242","DOIUrl":"https://doi.org/10.37935/AION.V0I9.242","url":null,"abstract":"In 1965 Gerard Kwiatkowski and Marian Bogusz organized the fi rst of the Spatial Forms Biennales in Elbląg – a city based in the so-called “Recovered Territories”. Selected artists, supported by ZAMECH mechanical plant and with the permission of the communist authorities, created several dozen huge metal sculptures known as “Spatial Forms”. This was the biggest experiment combining art and industry in Poland or even in Europe. The aim of the article is to juxtapose the role of this phenomenon, namely how the creators of the Biennales found a balance between artistic freedom and political limitations, these limitations were forced upon the artists in a way that might prompt one to recall, Foucault’s manner of “discipline” (Foucault, 1973). Trindade","doi":"10.37935/AION.V0I9.237","DOIUrl":"https://doi.org/10.37935/AION.V0I9.237","url":null,"abstract":"Investiga-se neste trabalho, a partir de uma perspectiva trans-histórica, como o arquiteto bolonhês Antônio José Landi (1713-1791) manejou modelos de matrizes ornamentais italianas de diferentes temporalidades e tradições estilísticas em seus desenhos para os projetos da Residência e Administração dos Governadores do Grão-Pará entre 1759 e 1767, na operação imagética de seu pathosformel. O trabalho analisa uma pequena seleção de duas pranchas que contêm desenhos de portas e janelas em elevação, executados por Landi no Brasil, parte da coletânea de desenhos dos projetos para a edifi cação, em comparação com 50 gravuras executadas como exercício profi ssional do arquiteto na Itália. I am convinced the national assumptions concerning the azulejo followed six phases which I have linked to different identity mutations that could be summarized as unceasing historicist approaches, which are characterological and long-term. Historicism prevailed until the end of the nineteenth century. A passion for characterological principles followed, which was conveyed by Reynaldo dos Santos with unsurpassable strength. However, when the Estado Novo’s identity pattern started to decline, art historians focused on researching unchanged structures. First, traces of Portuguese originality, though ephemeral, were sought after. Second, researchers attempted to show that the azulejo is an expression of Portuguese sensibility which, with its ups and downs, remained throughout the centuries. Monteiro","doi":"10.37935/AION.V0I8.216","DOIUrl":"https://doi.org/10.37935/AION.V0I8.216","url":null,"abstract":"The present article focuses on the work of João Miguel dos Santos Simões (1907-1972), a researcher, historian, scholar and promoter of Portuguese azulejos and their use in Portugal, as well as the founder of the National Azulejo Museum. Santos Simões played a very important role in the identification both of the azulejo’s specific characteristics and of their use in Portugal. He was, in the 20th century, one of the most important promoters of the azulejo as a distinctly Portuguese art form. His main theoretical contribution concerns the recognition of the azulejo’s unique expression in Portugal — and, by extension, in Brazil. Its use gave rise to monumental decorations and helped shape the architecture in original ways. Apart from identifying the main characteristics of the use of azulejos in Portugal, Santos Simões also compared it to the situation in other countries, namely in Spain.
