In order to analyse the response of a DC microgrid to an islanding event, DC voltage and current signatures are captured locally at the terminals of Distributed Energy Resources (DERs). Further analysis on DC voltage and current measurements is carried out to derive the Rate of Change of Voltage (ROCOV) and the Rate of Change of Current (ROCOC), to distinguish between genuine islanding events and other disturbances. A detailed DC microgrid has been developed in MATLAB/Simulink to analyse the response of the DERs within a DC microgrid during intentional or unintentional islanding events. The results show that these approaches cannot be used to classify and characterise between islanding and non-islanding events caused by high resistive faults for DC microgrids, as the response of the DERs are dependent on the technology and associated control systems,which influences post event analysis in distinguishing between events.","PeriodicalId":362400,"journal":{"name":"15th IET International Conference on AC and DC Power Transmission (ACDC 2019)","volume":"1 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2019-03-30","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"115955321","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

MMCs are blocked for only a short period of time while DCCBs operate and resume operation afterwards. A comparison is made with a protection strategy in which MMC blocking is avoided. The study analyses the impact of dc faults on dc power flow, ac system, DCCB dimensioning and MMC’s antiparallel diodes. Operation is demonstrated on a point-to-point HVDC and a three-terminal dc grid, also using thermal model of MMC’s IGBT module. Main benefits of the proposed strategy are simplicity and low protection system cost. On the downside, antiparallel diodes are exposed to greater current and thermal stress.","PeriodicalId":362400,"journal":{"name":"15th IET International Conference on AC and DC Power Transmission (ACDC 2019)","volume":"29 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2019-02-07","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"122465009","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The method accounts for the frequency dependency of line parameters and essentially translates the state of the art time-domain universal line model into state space. The proposed model is compared against the latest state space model for single DC cable and a bipolar DC cable and it shows certain advantages. DC cables are represented without applying Kron reduction which means that a higher accuracy can be achieved. Single DC cable is represented with a lower model order and higher accuracy for a wide spectre of upper frequency limits and cable lengths. The longer the cable and the higher the upper frequency limit, the more pronounced is the model order reduction. The two state space models are also compared for a 70km bipolar DC cable in the frequency range up to 1 kHz and the proposed model achieves higher accuracy with a slightly lower model order. More importantly, the proposed model succeeds at representing the effect of mutual coupling within the desired accuracy criteria. Furthermore, based on the analysis of the two-conductor DC cable (bipolar cable), it is shown that the proposed method overcomes the issue to represent unbalanced multi-conductor lines and cables in state space. The reason is that it avoids modal transformation. Moreover, in case of multi-conductor lines and cables, it is expected that the proposed method is beneficial for longer systems, higher upper frequency limits and for more mutually coupled conductors.","PeriodicalId":362400,"journal":{"name":"15th IET International Conference on AC and DC Power Transmission (ACDC 2019)","volume":"57 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2019-02-07","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"134523963","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Even if a complete converter station is developed by a single manufacturer, it might be challenging to integrate this terminal into a DC grid that comprises of several converter stations built by other vendors. Moreover, the different fault response exhibited by each converter technology complicates the design of HVDC protection systems. Therefore, this study investigates the fault response of a multivendor HVDC grid. An illustrative 4-terminal meshed HVDC grid, which is modelled in PSCAD environment, is used to perform studies of interoperability of different converter topologies on a common HVDC network. The investigation of the fault behaviour of such a multivendor HVDC network highlights the main impediments that need to be tackled and a set of actions that needs to be done at a converter level in order to mitigate the impact of DC faults on the HVDC system. Moreover, the key parameters that need to be taken into account when designing a protection scheme for a multivendor HVDC grid are identified.","PeriodicalId":362400,"journal":{"name":"15th IET International Conference on AC and DC Power Transmission (ACDC 2019)","volume":"37 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2019-02-07","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"131028295","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Droop control provides fast dynamic response and power-sharing between converter stations among other advantages but, as the controller is usually implemented as a merely proportional gain, the DC grid resonances damping is often very poor. This is because although the grids under study are DC, a broad range of high-frequency components and transient dynamics are inevitable in DC grids caused by long cables and switching to name a few. Conventional droops based on proportional gain are not able to handle such frequency-dependant issues of the DC grids. To improve the DC dynamic response, this paper presents a new droop controller where a DC resonance mitigation compensator is augmented to the conventional droop control that will result in an improved droop compensation by guaranteeing that power-sharing task will satisfactorily meet the desired damping requirements.","PeriodicalId":362400,"journal":{"name":"15th IET International Conference on AC and DC Power Transmission (ACDC 2019)","volume":"93 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2019-02-06","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"132983892","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

To date, there is no business-as-usual example of LVDC for utility applications and only few trials have been developed so far. The deployment of LVDC in general will present revolutionary changes in LV distribution networks. This will require are thinking of network design principles and the enablement of integrated solutions. This discussion paper reviews the current practice in utility-scale LVDC distribution networks worldwide. The paper also presents a new multi-zone architecture approach which can be used to better understand future of LVDC systems, and exploit their inherent flexibility to allow synergistic integration of multiple energy technologies.","PeriodicalId":362400,"journal":{"name":"15th IET International Conference on AC and DC Power Transmission (ACDC 2019)","volume":"11 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2019-02-06","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"117194670","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The benefit of MTDC systems is that they can be reconfigured during contingencies to maintain the supply of power to the host AC systems. DC grid reconfiguration in MTDC systems will inevitably change the power injections to the host AC system, and will thus affect the dynamic behaviour of the AC system. This paper investigates the dynamic behaviour of the representative Great British (GB) transmission system (i.e. a reduced order dynamic model) for a series of reconfigurations in a meshed MTDC grid connecting offshore WPPs to the system. Hierarchical control strategies for the MTDC system including a DC power flow solver (PFS) and pilot voltage droop (PVD) are compared. From the analysis, it is observed that the reconfiguration of MTDC grid has a notable impact on large-disturbance dynamics of the GB transmission system.","PeriodicalId":362400,"journal":{"name":"15th IET International Conference on AC and DC Power Transmission (ACDC 2019)","volume":"18 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2019-02-06","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"132111306","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The impact of the advanced Aero-Hydro-Servo-Elastic model, and the most common analytical function wind turbine model, on the generator-converter dynamics are assessed. Results corresponding to the system response to steps up/down in wind speed and turbulent wind speed conditions are presented and discussed in the paper. It is found that below rated speed there is no significant difference between results obtained from both models. Above rated wind speed there exist some differences among results.","PeriodicalId":362400,"journal":{"name":"15th IET International Conference on AC and DC Power Transmission (ACDC 2019)","volume":"22 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2019-02-05","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"114919943","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
