Many of these prototypes are based on conventional centralised control strategies and are therefore unable to address concerns regarding scalability and the limitations imposed by hardware delays when using distributed control strategies. This paper presents an overview of common control architectures along with the design, construction and initial findings from industrially representative control hardware.","PeriodicalId":362400,"journal":{"name":"15th IET International Conference on AC and DC Power Transmission (ACDC 2019)","volume":"1 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2019-02-05","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"125531549","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

An introduction of a low pass filter to droop control has been motivated to filter the active power measurement and ensures a time decoupling with the inner control loops, whereas, this low-pass filter can also provide inertia to the system. This functionality is limited due to its negative impact on the active power dynamic. This paper proposes an analysis of the conventional droop control by showing its limitations and proposes an improved inertial droop control that allows providing the inertia to the system and ensures a good dynamic behavior of the active power at once in simple manner, and without modifying the load sharing capability. The results obtained are compared to the conventional method (Droop control and VSM) in various topologies in order to show the relevance of the proposed method.","PeriodicalId":362400,"journal":{"name":"15th IET International Conference on AC and DC Power Transmission (ACDC 2019)","volume":"59 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2019-02-05","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"132796969","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

For example, energising existing LV AC cables by DC with higher voltages (>0.4kV) can potentially release additional power capacity on LV cables and reduce the associated thermal losses. However, converting existing AC cables for DC operation may change the cable performance under faulted conditions, resulting in a change to its lifetime. The nature of future LVDC systems can be capacitive due to the characteristic of particular customers such as battery energy storage systems (BESS) and electric vehicles (EVs). A short-circuit fault on the DC side may lead to a discharge/release of significant transient energy in LV cables which was never anticipated under traditional LVAC networks. This paper quantifies the transient DC fault let-through energy which can be imposed on existing AC cables used for DC operation, and draws conclusions on the potential impact of such phenomena on the cable performance. A detailed model of an LVDC test network with three-core LV cables is developed using PSCAD/EMTDC for simulation studies.","PeriodicalId":362400,"journal":{"name":"15th IET International Conference on AC and DC Power Transmission (ACDC 2019)","volume":"32 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2019-02-05","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"129924686","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The latency in data transmission, and the variation in latency, known as jitter, are one of the most important features, in addition to reliability and security, to be considered in the modelling of telecommunication networks when assessing the overall performance of electric power systems. Further, in switched packet telecommunication systems, such as the internet, data packets arriving out of order might occur. Based on the behaviour of switched telecommunication networks and considering the latency as the main component to be represented, in this paper, a telecommunication model is developed and a user defined component is built in PSCAD/ EMTDC using the FORTRAN 90 language. Such a model is suitable to represent telecommunication networks with variable and constant latency as well as switched packet telecommunication systems, i.e. the internet and telephone networks. Results obtained from the application of the telecommunication model to the control a multi-terminal VSC HVDC network, interfacing offshore wind power generation, are then presented and discussed in the paper.","PeriodicalId":362400,"journal":{"name":"15th IET International Conference on AC and DC Power Transmission (ACDC 2019)","volume":"23 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2018-09-05","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"116714755","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The impacts of fault type and fault resistance are shown and the physical behaviour of the transient fault return current is explained. A transformation in modal quantities enables a decoupling of the measured phase currents and voltages. The results are presented in a point-to-point HVDC grid for both phase and modal quantities. It is shown that fault analysis in the modal domain is an auspicious method for fault detection and faulty line discrimination.","PeriodicalId":362400,"journal":{"name":"15th IET International Conference on AC and DC Power Transmission (ACDC 2019)","volume":"9 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1900-01-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"122291407","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
