This identity representation can be expressed through language and religion. This study aimed at describing the language use and religious identity representation of Arab diaspora depicted from shop signs in Sydney. The data consisted of pictures that were collected from commercial shops along the Haldon Street of Sydney, Australia. The findings demonstrated that language choices are varied in the linguistic landscape of shop signs. English is the predominant language used, while Arabic is used in the domain related to religion. This study also found the use of Islamic expressions in commercial signage is not only informative but also a symbolic function. This study investigated the interlanguage development patterns of L1 Malay learners by examining the production errors of learners at varying English proficiency levels. Students from tertiary institutions in Malaysia completed tasks designed to elicit production of the English passive. The results indicated that overall, the main errors committed by the learners were related to the be-auxiliary and the past participle verb form, which are non-existent in their L1. Certain types of errors diminished at higher English proficiency levels, whilst certain others persisted in high proficiency learners. These results point to underlying differences in sources of errors where some types of errors are more resistant to change, while others may be resolved as the interlanguage system develops to approximate the target language. Kamus ini disusun sebagai usaha membantu orang-orang Inggeris yang berhasrat ke Kepulauan Melayu selepas Bowrey. Makalah ini bertujuan membincangkan aspek sosiobudaya yang terdapat dalam data kamus Thomas Bowrey (KTB). Perbandingan secara sinkronis dan diakronis menjadi dasar analisis ini. Kaedah tinjauan digunakan untuk menganalisis setiap kata dalam KTB. Penguraian kesemua entri dalam kamus ini terdiri atas perbandingan dengan kamus yang lebih moden dan data korpus lain seperti Kamus Dewan Edisi Keempat (Dewan Bahasa dan Pustaka, 2007), Kamus Besar Bahasa Indonesia (dalam talian), A Comprehensive Indonesian-English Dictionary (Stevens & Schmidgall-Tellings, 2010). Sumber sezaman seperti daftar kata Pigafetta (1525), daftar kata Houtman (1603) dan daftar kata Wiltens dan Danckaerts (1623) digunakan sebagai alat untuk menyempurnakan penguraian data kamus Bowrey. Aspek sosiobudaya yang dibincangkan dalam makalah ini merangkumi data yang berkaitan dengan istilah kata ganti nama (sapaan) dan istilah kekeluargaan. This is a qualitative research design using the content analysis method. The research data are all of the proverbs denoting the value of diligence found in the Malay and Tamil textbooks used in the primary level but only four proverbs from these textbooks are part of the analysis. The analysis of the operational metaphor for each proverb is based on the domain features contained in the conceptual space defined in the Hybrid Theory. Additionally, the Malay and Tamil proverbs have its own moral values and philosophical foundations based on each context of the respective society. We suggest that the conceptual space visualises the similarities and differences in the comparison of the Malay and Tamil proverbs. The analysis displays a new approach in conceptualising proverbs according to the Malay and Tamil cultural thinking in tandem with the intellectual advancements of the respective tradition. Walau bagaimanapun, contoh-contoh penggunaan kata kerja yang boleh juga mendukung makna tersirat tersebut memerlukan perspektif pragmatik melalui pengaplikasian Teori Relevans bagi membolehkan penginterpretasian makna yang lebih mendalam dan sempurna dapat dilakukan. Kajian ini yang tergolong sebagai kajian kualitatif mengguna pakai kaedah analisis dokumen dengan memfokuskan reka bentuk kajian analisis kandungan. Di samping itu, tinjauan melalui borang soal selidik terhadap 96 orang pelajar tingkatan enam juga turut dilakukan bagi melihat keberkesanan Tatabahasa Dewan dalam menghuraikan aspek golongan kata kerja yang selama ini hanya memfokuskan contoh-contoh penggunaan kata kerja yang mendukung makna tersurat semata-mata. Kajian ini mendapati bahawa pengaplikasian Teori Relevans dalam bidang ilmu pragmatik sememangnya telah terbukti dapat membantu menyelesaikan fenomena pelanggaran sekatan pilihan yang melibatkan contoh-contoh penggunaan kata kerja yang boleh juga mendukung makna tersirat. Dapatan kajian daripada kajian ini diharapkan dapat membantu para penulis Tatabahasa Dewan untuk memperoleh input-input baharu yang bermanfaat. Kajian ini berbentuk kualitatif sepenuhnya melalui analisis dokumen yang telah dibukukan. Data peribahasa ini dikutip melalui pensampelan bertujuan dalam Kamus Peribahasa Melayu Edisi Kelima oleh Rahman (2017), Kamus Istimewa Peribahasa Melayu Edisi Kedua oleh Hussain (2016) serta Kamus Peribahasa Melayu oleh Said (2013). Keseluruhannya, terdapat sembilan data peribahasa Melayu yang bersumberkan burung gagak ini. {"title":"The Language Ecology of Graduate Students: An Exploration through Vocabulary Contribution","authors":"D. Understanding students’ learning ecology may be done through the identification of pertinent sociomaterial networks with which students engage to initiate or complement learning. This study was set in an academic writing module taught by the researcher. An open invitation was extended to his students to contribute any vocabulary they encountered outside of his classroom. Along with the vocabulary contribution, students also had to provide the excerpt where the word occurred and the source-type. Contributions were made on an online Excel file. There was a total of 277 contributions made, of which 259 were unique (229 words and 30 unique strings of words). Students’ contributions of strings of words were not anticipated. A majority of these contributions came from academic sources, such as research articles or book chapters, which may be a pertinent aspect of the graduate students’ language ecology. Ini tidak berlaku dalam realiti dan dibuktikan dalam podcast #NoTapis (#NoTapis, 2020). #NoTapis ialah satu temu bual dengan seorang doktor berkaitan COVID-19. Analisis ini mengaplikasikan metod kualitatif - muat turun, transkripi dan analisis teks. Analisis ini mempunyai dua objektif, iaitu pertamanya, mengenal pasti kepatuhan dan ketidakpatuhan MP; dan keduanya membincangkan faktor kepatuhan MP dan korelasinya dengan elemen pendidikan, iaitu domain kognitif dan afektif dalam taksonomi Bloom (1956). Objektif ini bertitik tolak daripada pandangan Gary (2020) bahawa terdapat kandungan podcast yang bersifat mendidik. Kepatuhan MP didapati berkorelasi dengan domain kognitif dan afektif. Korelasi pada domain kognitif berlaku pada semua aras kecuali aras 5 manakala bagi domain afektif, korelasi berlaku pada semua aras. Pematuhan MP didapati sentiasa berkorelasi dengan aras paling rendah kepada aras yang lebih tinggi. Ini bertepatan dengan penyataan bahawa pengajaran dan pembelajaran (PdP) merupakan satu proses. Keterbatasan kosa kata adalah antara punca kegagalan pelajar menguasai teks bacaan, berkomunikasi dan menghasilkan penulisan yang baik. Kajian ini bertujuan mengkaji hubungan antara saiz kosa kata dan pengetahuan kolokasi bahasa Arab. Dua set ujian iaitu; ujian saiz kosa kata dan ujian kolokasi bahasa Arab telah diedarkan kepada pelajar tingkatan enam yang mengambil subjek bahasa Arab di sekolah menengah agama di Malaysia. Kajian ini menggunakan persampelan bertujuan dengan memilih seramai 150 orang pelajar yang sedang mengikuti kurikulum Sijil Tinggi Agama Malaysia (STAM) dari empat buah Sekolah Agama Bantuan Kerajaan (SABK) di Perak. Dapatan kajian menunjukkan hubungan antara saiz kosa kata dan pengetahuan kolokasi bahasa Arab berkorelasi secara signifikan (r = .76, p < .01) bahkan perhubungan positif yang kuat. Namun, hasil nilai varians r² membuktikan bahawa hanya 57.7 peratus corak peningkatan faktor pengetahuan kolokasi bahasa Arab dijelaskan oleh perubahan corak saiz kosa kata, selebihnya oleh faktor lain yang tidak dapat dikesan. As various forms of technology such as gaming can be potentially used as platforms for online teaching and learning, the study aims to investigate the use of vocabulary learning strategies (VLS) in a massively multiplayer online role-playing game (MMORPG) among Malaysian English as a second language (ESL) players. Data were obtained via a 12-hour online game-play recorded sessions of Guild Wars 2 involving four Malaysian ESL players. The participants consisted of experienced online gamers aged between 24 and 25 years. The game-play sessions were also observed to provide supporting details on how the players utilised strategies when learning English vocabulary. The outcome of the study revealed that the ESL players employed different VLS during their game-play sessions. Gu and Johnson’s (1996) categorisation of VLS, which are metacognitive, cognitive, memory, and activation strategies, was subsequently modified to accommodate the MMORPG context.
