I begin by comparing the efforts to quantitatively measure the plague in London in 1665. Then I develop five propositions for studying the social construction of statistics: (1) facts are social constructions; (2) measuring involves making decisions, (3) counting is not straightforward; (4) all comparisons involve choices; and (5) social patterns shape numbers. In this viewpoint, we provide examples of effective and poor quantitative communication by the professional news media as well as social media communicators. Effective examples include a number of online animations and engaging interactive simulations. Examples of poor quantitative communication include the widespread reporting of raw numbers rather than rates, failing to address uncertainty, not providing sufficient context for numbers, and not discussing the implications of false negative and false positive diagnostic test results. {"title":"A Comparison of Students’ Quantitative Reasoning Skills in STEM and Non-STEM Math Pathways","authors":"Emily Elrod, Joo Young Park","doi":"10.5038/1936-4660.13.2.1309","DOIUrl":"https://doi.org/10.5038/1936-4660.13.2.1309","url":null,"abstract":"Quantitative Reasoning (QR) is essential for today’s students, yet most higher education institutions have not effectively addressed this issue. This study investigates students’ quantitative reasoning in STEM and Non-STEM math pathways using a non-proprietary, NSF grant-funded instrument, the Quantitative Literacy & Reasoning Assessment (QLRA). Participants were students enrolled in at least one college-level math pathway course at a large public institution in the southeastern US. The results showed a significant difference between STEM and Non-STEM students’ QLRA scores, with STEM students (n = 244, M = 27%, SD = 16.21%) scoring, on average, about 6% higher than Non-STEM students (n = 295, M = 21.1%, SD =11.38%). STEM students who were further along in their math sequence, i.e. Pre-calculus/Trigonometry and Calculus I, had a higher QLRA score than those taking the gateway math courses in that pathway. Non-STEM students who took additional math courses also had a higher QLRA score than those in the entry-level math course. However, the students overall had relatively low QR skills (n = 539, M = 23.78%, SD = 14.07%). These results highlight the need for an increased understanding of the math pathways initiative and its relationship with quantitative reasoning. Mathematics as a solution of various problems confronting humans. But there are some difficulties in studying mathematics. This research aims to analyze the difficulties faced by students when solving geometry problems and find solutions in the form of scaffolding. The subjects in this study were three eighth grade students with different levels of ability. This research is a qualitative research with data collection techniques using task-based test and interview methods. Technical data analysis using data reduction techniques, the presentation of data to the conclusion. The results showed that the difficulties experienced by students in solving geometry problems include, (1) not being able to dig up the information in the problem, (2) not being able to make a plan of completion correctly, (3) not being able to connect the concept of geomteriors with other concepts, (4) unable to use count operations correctly, (5) not checking the results of its work. Scaffolding given to overcome the problem include, they are: (1) reviewing: asking students to read the problem again carefully, (2) explaining: giving a description of the problem or instructions in the problem solving process to make a solution step, (3) developing conceptual thinking, explaining and restructuring (conducting question and answer to direct students to the correct answer. (3) connecting, developing conceptual. \u0000Abstrak \u0000Ilmu matematika sebagai salah satu penunjang kegiatan manusia dalam kehidupannya. Matematika sebagai solusi dari berbagai permasalahan yang dihadapai manusia. Namun terdapat bebrapa kesulitan dalam mempelajari ilmu matematika. Penlitian ini bertujuan untuk menganalisis kesulitan yang dihadapi siswa saat menyelesaikan masalah geometri dan mencari solusi berupa scaffolding. Subjek dalam penelitian ini adalah tiga orang siswa kelas VIII dengan tingkat kemampuan yang berbeda. Penelitian ini merupakan penelitian kualitatif dengan teknik pengumpulan data menggunakan metode tes dan wawancara berbasis tugas. Teknis analisis data menggunakan teknik reduksi data, penyajian data sampai pada penarikan kesimpulan. Hasil penelitian menunjukkan bahwa kesulitan yang dialami siswa dalam menyelesaikan masalah geometri diantaranya, (1) tidak mampu menggali informasi yang ada pada soal, (2) tidak mampu membuat rencana penyelesaian secara benar, (3) tidak mampu menghubungkan konsep geomteri dengan konsep yang lain, (4) tidak mampu menggunakan operasi hitung dengan benar, (5) tidak melakukan pengecekan terhadap hasil pekerjaannya. Look at the interaction of effects between learning models and gender on students' mathematical reasoning abilities. The design of this study used a 2 x 2 factorial design. Sampling was carried out using a simple random sampling technique by first conducting a class equality test. Data was collected using a test technique in the form of a question matter. Data were analyzed using two-way ANOVA. The analysis shows that; 1). The problem-based learning model of learning is better than the direct learning model in terms of students 'mathematical punishment abilities, 2. There was no interaction between the learning models used with the gender on the students' mathematical punishment abilities of students. Both male and female students requested compilation to be taught by applying the problem-based learning model to the direct learning model. \u0000Abstrak \u0000Penelitian ini bertujuan untuk; 1) membandingkan model Problem Based Learning dengan model pembelajaran langsung dalam perspektif kemampuan penalaran matematis siswa. 2). Melihat interaksi efek antara model pembelajaran dan gender terhadap kemampuan penalaran matematis siswa. Rancangan penelitian ini menggunakan desain factorial 2 x 2. Pengambilan sampel dilakukan dengan menggunakan teknik simpel random sampling dengan terlebih dahulu melakukan uji kesetaraan kelas. Data dikumpulkan dengan menggunakan teknik tes dengan bentuk soal uraian. Data dianalisis menggunakan ANAVA dua jalur. Hasil analisis menunjukan bahwa; 1). Model pembelajaran problem based learning lebih baik dibandingkan model pembelajaran lansung dalam hal kemampuan penalaran matematis siswa, 2. Tidak terdapat efek interaksi antara model pembelajaran yang digunakan dengan gender terhadap kemampuan penalaran matematis siswa. Students are still difficult to draw conclusions, understand problems, and provide reasons for the answers produced. One way to develop students' ability to solve problem solving problems is to get students to develop questions. When students make questions it is expected to understand the questions well. The strategy that can be used to familiarize students with developing questions is through the Problem Posing approach. The purpose of this study is to analyze the students' ability to develop problem solving questions. This study uses a qualitative approach with descriptive types. The subjects of this study were six students at Junior High School 3 Banda Aceh. Students 'ability in compiling problem solving questions is analyzed by categorizing the students' questions based on the type of difficulties that are seen from the structure of the language and the structure of mathematics. The results showed that students who meet the indicators understand the problem, make plans, carry out plans and check again, are able to make problems in terms of mathematical structures containing propositions to change, restate and vary, in terms of language structures containing presuppositions. Furthermore, students who meet the indicators understand the problem, make plans and implement plans, make the problems in terms of the mathematical structure containing propositions grouping and varying, in terms of the structure of the language containing the assignment propositions. The results also showed that students who met the indicators understood the problem and made a plan, were able to make the problem in terms of the mathematical structure containing the proposition restated and in terms of the language structure containing the assignment proposition. \u0000Abstrak \u0000Kemampuan pemecahan masalah sangat penting untuk dimiliki oleh setiap siswa. Siswa masih sulit untuk membuat kesimpulan, memahami permasalahan, dan memberikan alasan atas jawaban yang dihasilkan. Salah satu cara untuk mengembangkan kemampuan siswa menyelesaikan soal pemecahan masalah adalah dengan membiasakan siswa menyusun soal. Ketika siswa membuat soal diharapkan untuk memahami soal dengan baik. Strategi yang dapat digunakan untuk membiasakan siswa menyusun soal adalah melalui pendekatan Problem Posing. Tujuan dari penelitian ini adalah menganalisis kemampuan siswa dalam menyusun soal pemecahan masalah. Penelitian ini menggunakan pendekatan kualitatif dengan jenis deskriptif. Subjek penelitian ini adalah enam siswa pada SMP Negeri 3 Banda Aceh. Kemampuan siswa dalam menyusun soal pemecahan masalah dianalisis dengan mengkategorikan soal-soal yang dibuat siswa berdasarkan jenis kesulitannya yaitu dilihat dari struktur bahasa dan struktur matematika. This study uses a quantitative approach. The sample in this study was class VIII-1 MTsS Lam Ujong 2018/2019 academic year, with a number of students 20. The sampling technique was carried out randomly. Data collection techniques using test and non-test instruments (observation and interviews). This research was conducted in SMP Negeri 10 Kupang with a population of VIII grade as many as 11. Sample classes of this study were VIII C classes totaling 30 people who are randomly selected from the populationwith simple ramdom sampling. Instrument in this research namely observation and learning achievement texts in the form of multiple choice as many as 20 item. Data analysis techniques used are descriptive analysis and parametric statistics using the help of the SPSS 22 program. Based on the results of observations and achievement indicators obtained student achievement is classified as very good. The T-test results showed that the tcount = 36,353 > ttable = 2,045 with a significance level of 5% which means that H0 was rejected and Ha was accepted. \u0000Abstrak \u0000Penelitian ini bertujuan untuk mengetahui pelaksanaan pembelajaran dan pengaruh model pembelajaran sinektik terhadap prestasi belajar matematika siswa pada pokok bahasan teorema pythagoras tahun ajaran 2019/2020. Penelitian ini dilaksanakan di SMP Negeri 10 Kupang dengan populasi kelas VIII sebanyak sebelas kelas. Sampel dari penelitian ini adalah kelas VIII C yang berjumlah 30 orang yang dipilih secara acak dari populasi dengan teknik simple random sampling. Instrumen dalam penelitian ini yaitu observasi dan tes prestasi belajar berbentuk pilihan ganda sebanyak 20 butir soal. Teknik analisis data yang digunakan adalah analisis deskriptif dan statistik parametrik yang menggunakan bantuan program SPSS 22. Berdasarkan hasil observasi dan pencapaian indikator didapatkan prestasi belajar siswa tergolong sangat baik. Hasil uji-t menunjukan = 36,353 > = 2,045 dengan taraf signifikansi 5% yang berarti H0 ditolak dan Ha diterima. One learning model can improve students 'mathematical communication skills and at the same time students' mathematical disposition is the Problem Based Learning (PBL) model. The aim to be achieved is to find out the improvement of students 'mathematical communication skills and mathematical disposition using PBL models in terms of students' initial mathematical level. This research is an experimental research design with pretest posttest control group design. The research population was Grade VII students of SMP 9 Langsa. Students are grouped into two classes namely the experimental class and the control class randomly selected from eight parallel classes. The instrument used was a test of mathematical communication skills and a mathematical disposition questionnaire. Data analysis was performed using two-way ANOVA. The results showed that improving students 'mathematical communication ability and students' mathematical disposition by applying PBL learning models is better than students applying conventional learning models. There is no interaction between the PBL learning model with student level on mathematical communication skills and students' mathematical disposition. \u0000Abstrak \u0000Kemampuan komunikasi matematis siswa masih tergolong rendah. Salah satu model pembelajaran dapat meningkatkan kemampuan komunikasi matematis siswa dan sekaligus disposisi matematis siswa adalah model Problem Based Learning (PBL). Tujuan yang ingin dicapai ialah untuk mengetahui peningkatan kemampuan komunikasi matematis siswa dan disposisi matematis menggunakan model PBL ditinjau dari kemampuan awal matematis siswa. Penelitian ini merupakan penelitian eksperimen dengan desain pretest postest control group design. Populasi penelitian adalah siswa kelas VII SMP Negeri 9 Langsa. Siswa dikelompokkan menjadi dua kelas yaitu kelas eksperimen dan kelas kontrol yang dipilih secara acak dari delapan kelas paralel. Instrumen yang digunakan tes kemampuan komunikasi matematis dan angket disposisi matematis. Analisis data dilakukan dengan menggunakan anova dua arah. Hasil penelitian menunjukkan bahwa peningkatan kemampuan komunikasi matematis siswa dan disposisi matematis siswa dengan menerapkan model pembelajaran PBL lebih baik dari pada siswa yang menerapkan model pembelajaran konvensional. Learning using the cooperative model type STAD and Jigsaw is considered capable of improving student achievement through group discussion and investigation through various sources used by students. The purpose of this study was to determine differences in learning achievement between students who were taught with the Jigsaw Type Cooperative Learning Model and students who were taught with the STAD Type Cooperative Learning Model on Statistics material. This research is an experimental research design with a Pretest-Posttest Control Design Group. The population in this study were all eighth grade students of SMP Negeri 1 Trienggadeng even semester 2016/2017 academic year. While the sample is a portion of the population taken using the Random Sampling technique taken by 2 classes, namely Class VIII-3 and Class VIII-5. Class VIII-3 for the Jigsaw learning model and Class VIII-5 for the STAD learning model. The instrument used to obtain research data in the form of student achievement tests and student motivation questionnaires. The statistical test used to analyze data on differences in learning achievement and student motivation questionnaires is the t-test. The results showed that there were differences in learning achievement and motivation between students who were taught with the Jigsaw type cooperative learning model and students who were taught with the STAD type cooperative learning model. \u0000Abstrak \u0000Model pembelajaran yang inovatif dan menyenangkan menempatkan siswa sebagai pusat belajar diantaranya adalah model pembelajaran kooperatif tipe STAD dan model pembelajaran kooperatif tipe Jigsaw. Pembelajaran menggunakan model kooperatif tipe STAD dan Jigsaw dinilai mampu meningkatkan prestasi belajar siswa melalui diskusi kelompok dan investigasi melalui berbagai sumber yang digunakan siswa. Tujuan penelitian ini untuk mengetahui perbedaan prestasi belajar antara siswa yang diajar dengan Model Pembelajaran Kooperatif Tipe Jigsaw dan siswa yang diajarkan dengan Model Pembelajaran Kooperatif Tipe STAD pada materi Statistik. Penelitian ini merupakan penelitian eksperimen dengan desain penelitian Pretest-Posttest Control Grup Desain. Populasi dalam penelitian ini adalah seluruh siswa kelas VIII SMP Negeri 1 Trienggadeng semester genap tahun pelajaran 2016/2017. Sedangkan sampelnya adalah sebagian dari populasi yang diambil dengan menggunakan teknik Random Sampling yang diambil 2 kelas yaitu Kelas VIII-3 dan Kelas VIII-5.
