Mantzavinos","doi":"10.3917/rpec.221.0193","DOIUrl":"https://doi.org/10.3917/rpec.221.0193","url":null,"abstract":"Two interlocutors, Philip Pettit and a student, are exchanging views on liberal political and economic philosophy during lunch at Prospect House, the faculty club of Princeton. The dialogue begins with clarifications of the notion of liberty, and, against objections of the student, Pettit introduces and defends his own conception of freedom as nondomination rather than as non-interference. It proceeds with an exchange of arguments regarding the different kinds of institutional settings that entrench liberty and all the other things valued by humans. The interlocutors reach a preliminary consensus that in order to substantiate the republican ideal of freedom as non-domination in concrete institutional realities, two things are required: the establishment of a mixed constitution – so that no single, unconstrained body can exercise lawmaking and other government functions – as well as eternal vigilance on the part of the citizens. The second part of the dialogue deals with a major challenge to the republican political philosophy expressed by the student: the issue of non-domination in markets, which is diagnosed as an important lacuna in republican thought. (Philip Pettit's views are drawn freely from his following publications: Republicanism. A Theory of Freedom and Government, Oxford: Oxford University Press, 1997; A Theory of Freedom. From the Psychology to the Politics of Agency, Cambridge: Polity Press, 2001; (with Geoffrey Brennan): The Economy of Esteem: An Essay on Civil and Political Society, Oxford: Oxford University Press, 2004; (with Christian List): Group Agency: The Possibility, Design and Status of Corporate Agents, Oxford: Oxford University Press, 2011; On the People's Terms. La vie collective est organisee par des normes, mais qu'elles ordonnent les comportements dans les faits n'impliquent pas qu'elles soient desirables. Une stricte description des normes peut necessiter de prendre en compte les questions ethiques, lesquelles peuvent etre traduites a l'aide de la methode axiomatique ; choisir les normes en revanche est une activite de nature fondamentalement normative, qui interroge la legitimite des decisions et des evaluations. La possibilite meme de demarcation entre positif et normatif ne va pas de soi : en particulier en economie du bien-etre, les approches standards qui visent a eviter les jugements de valeur (le welfarisme) ou a les isoler (l'axiomatique) peuvent s'averer problematiques. Pour conclure, nous presentons les quatre articles du numero qui illustrent les quatre etapes de cette reflexion sur la normativite.","PeriodicalId":36051,"journal":{"name":"Revue de Philosophie Economique","volume":"1 1","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2020-01-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"70515596","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Je presenterai ici une nouvelle theorie du liberalisme que j’appelle « liberalisme oriente vers la croissance ». D’abord, j’examine le concept de liberte positive et negative d’Isaiah Berlin et je pose la question fondamentale en matiere de liberte, a savoir que la liberte est un ideal paradoxal. J’identifierai deux paradoxes : l’un porte sur la liberte ordinaire et les valeurs sophistiquees, l’autre sur la question de la liberation et de l’apathie des individus ou des populations. Comment pouvons-nous surmonter ces paradoxes ? Pour repondre a cette question, j’examinerai l’argument de Charles Taylor sur la liberte positive (liberte) et en elargirai les implications. Le paradoxe est d’autant plus lorsqu’il s’agit de communautes, comme la societe japonaise. Au-dela du mode de pensee communautaire de Taylor, par exemple, je construis une nouvelle theorie de la liberte en proposant de suivre trois principes : le principe de la vertu (estime de soi), le principe du changement generateur et le principe de la differenciation. Je soutiens que la pierre de touche d’une societe libre depend de la facon dont nous concevons notre gouvernance sociale sur la base de ces principes.JEL Codes: Z10, B25.","PeriodicalId":36051,"journal":{"name":"Revue de Philosophie Economique","volume":"47 1","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2019-01-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"70514592","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
