Our applicative context is Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI). The main purpose of this paper is to propose a regularization framework for solving an inverse reconstruction problem in MRI. We focus on the Split Bregman method, which is a well known efficient tool for solving a wide variety of optimization problems e.g. total variation minimization problems arising from image denoising. The proposed denoising approach, based on the TV/ROF model, involves a second-order derivative penalty term and, accordingly, introduces some modifications to the Split Bregman scheme. Our iterative regularization strategy has interesting features in highlighting the image contrasts and in the noise removal. Numerical experiments prove the goodness of the proposed approach.","PeriodicalId":359504,"journal":{"name":"Proceedings of the 9th ACM International Conference on PErvasive Technologies Related to Assistive Environments","volume":"74 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2016-06-29","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"124069692","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

One of them is the natural first person view using their eyes, which is limited regarding the field of view, perceived wavelengths or angular resolution. A third person view, which is often used in video games to provide a better visibility of the avatar and its surroundings, could overcome the limitations mentioned above to change the way humans visually perceive their environment. In this paper, we use an existing prototype consisting of a head-mounted display with an external camera to investigate the impact of a third person view regarding user experience and the evaluation of viewing angles. Besides manual view positioning by a user, we used an autonomic navigation task to compare both approaches. Results show that autonomic positioning shows significantly less errors than a manual positioning of the camera.","PeriodicalId":359504,"journal":{"name":"Proceedings of the 9th ACM International Conference on PErvasive Technologies Related to Assistive Environments","volume":"32 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2016-06-29","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"125905226","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The directional aspect of trajectory analysis is important in map matching, in direction based query processing and in animal movement data. The main contribution in the present work lies in the trajectory segmentation method which is based on directional changes in trajectory. Another contribution is the use of convex hulls of trajectories during filtration of outlier sub-trajectories. There are four components to the framework: (1): smoothing, (2): directional segmentation and classification, (3): outlier sub-trajectory filtering and (4): clustering. We split the trajectories into directional sub-trajectories such that they have a specific directional characteristics; for example, heading north-east. We consider 16 directional classes and assign the corresponding directional sub-trajectories to them. In the filtration step the outlier sub-trajectories are removed from the respective directional classes using a novel convex hull based approach. We compare convex hull filtering performance with conventional minimum bounding rectangle based approach. We finally cluster the filtered directional sub-trajectories to obtain global directional patterns in the data set using a modified DBSCAN algorithm. We also provide the comparison of proposed work with an existing state-of-the-art algorithm called TRACLUS. In this work two real data sets are analyzed: hurricane data and animal movement data.","PeriodicalId":359504,"journal":{"name":"Proceedings of the 9th ACM International Conference on PErvasive Technologies Related to Assistive Environments","volume":"33 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2016-06-29","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"132211602","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Most existing approaches rely on distributed sensors, such as cameras, RFID and motion sensors. These approaches suffer from high intrusiveness for the resident, coupled with an important amount of hardware that requires maintenance. In this paper, we explore a new, low-cost and efficient solution for fine-grained activity recognition using energy consumption as input. Existing works exploiting energy sensors see the problem from an energy saving and costs reducing point of view; the originality of our work is to characterize a user's actions and activities by decomposing the total power load into a sum of loads for individual appliances. This is done using only the data from a single energy sensor located at the main electrical panel. These contributions have been implemented and tested in real live smart home prototype, using a Complex Event Processing (CEP) engine.","PeriodicalId":359504,"journal":{"name":"Proceedings of the 9th ACM International Conference on PErvasive Technologies Related to Assistive Environments","volume":"1 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2016-06-29","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"128984000","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Through this SMAD, a user with motor disabilities is able to control home devices from a wheelchair by means of biological signals captured on muscles (sEMG) and eyes (EOG/VOG). Our SMAD focuses on the following end-user features: ease of setup and use, low cost and customizability. The functional design of the interface has been driven by a user-centered performance analysis. Moreover, the system has been conceived to be adaptable to the user's degree of disability. The physical communication between wheelchair and devices on the environment employs radio-frequency (RF), infrared (IR) and Bluetooth (BT). Two scenarios are presented, using respectively facial gestures and eyes movements through Emotiv EPOC and Eye Tribe Tracker. Experimental results show fulfilling performance for the first scenario. The second scenario is an evolution of the first one, in which preliminary results indicate greater usability of the control interface; however the system must undergo testing by a larger number of people for better accuracy performance. During offline and online sessions, users succeeded in employing our SMAD to operate home devices, simulating common needs of people with disabilities, with accuracy above 90% and information transmission rate of up to 53 bits/min. The final goal of our SMAD is to provide the end-user with a practical daily assistive platform, as close as possible to a product that works out of the box.","PeriodicalId":359504,"journal":{"name":"Proceedings of the 9th ACM International Conference on PErvasive Technologies Related to Assistive Environments","volume":"214 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2016-06-29","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"130671133","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The current study assessed the role of reading comprehension ability in discriminating between healthy elderly subjects and subjects with Mild Cognitive Impairment (MCI). A total of 98 participants with MCI and 17 non-demented elderly as controls ranging from 55-85 years old (16 males, 99 females), native speakers of the local language (Greek) were included. Novel reading tests performance were based on reading abilities, context comprehension and cognitive flexibility based on main cognitive domains such as attention and working memory. Results suggested that the assessment of reading ability through different discourse texts in a computerized environment could provide useful information for cognitive decline risk.","PeriodicalId":359504,"journal":{"name":"Proceedings of the 9th ACM International Conference on PErvasive Technologies Related to Assistive Environments","volume":"87 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2016-06-29","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"132967094","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
