In this paper, we introduce a new technological orthosis, the Blind Sight Navigator (BSN), for blind people or those whose sight is deteriorating due to a medical condition, which is a new advance in the fields of assistive technology and computer science, aim to promote autonomy and to enhance the quality of life of people who suffer visual impairments. Our prototype was created in order to propose a new alternative that is non-invasive and offers potential applications to virtual reality. This article explains its functioning and how it can help people with visual impairments. Also, we present the preliminary results of an experimental phase that was conducted to assess the reliability of our prototype.","PeriodicalId":359504,"journal":{"name":"Proceedings of the 9th ACM International Conference on PErvasive Technologies Related to Assistive Environments","volume":"21 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2016-06-29","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"121062328","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

With the development of smart homes, cognitively impaired inhabitants could benefit from the help of new adapted technologies in order to assist them in their daily activities. The first step to assisting humans in need comes with the need to detect their position in their home. In this paper, we introduce an innovative use of the ultrasound technology using round-trip time-of-flight (RTOF) based hardware as a mean to measure the position of people in their home. An implementation is described along with an experimentation showing its precision and the promising results in detecting both a static and a moving inhabitant.","PeriodicalId":359504,"journal":{"name":"Proceedings of the 9th ACM International Conference on PErvasive Technologies Related to Assistive Environments","volume":"10 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2016-06-29","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"126784603","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

These models should include the informal carer (IC) who usually lacks of skills and knowledge to develop assistance tasks. Therefore, support in decision making and informal carer empowerment are crucial to prevent and reduce the burden and stress suffered in the elderly care provided. This paper describes the Virtual Carer system aimed at supporting IC with a set of recommendations adapted to problems suffered in the activities of daily care developed or in daily activities of the older adult. The activities are detected by a set of sensors deployed in older adult's home or a questionnaires to be filled by the IC. The recommendation are sent to IC by means of text messages or email as well as learning videos accessible from e-learning system. As example, a particular use case of the Virtual Carer has been presented to show the information process of problems in IC's sleep patterns.","PeriodicalId":359504,"journal":{"name":"Proceedings of the 9th ACM International Conference on PErvasive Technologies Related to Assistive Environments","volume":"119 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2016-06-29","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"116383974","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Using this method, the learner relocates to a new place where the target language is the dominant language, and tries to learn the language my immersing themselves in the local environment. One of the disadvantages of this method is that relocating to a new place is not always a viable option. That's where Virtual Reality (VR) can come to our rescue. VR is an immersive technology that allows the user to wear a head-mounted display to be immersed in a life-like virtual environment. In our research, we explore the possibility of utilizing the power of VR for SLA by building a system called Ogma, which helps users immerse themselves in an environment representing a foreign place. In our pilot study, we built a VR system and performed user studies by comparing learning performance using VR against the traditional method. In both cases, users were given a set of ten Swedish words to learn. Results indicated that percentage retention using our VR method was significantly higher than that of the traditional method. In addition, the effectiveness and enjoyability ratings given by users were significantly higher for the VR method. This proves that our system has potential impact on SLA by using VR technology, without suffering the disadvantages of the traditional method.","PeriodicalId":359504,"journal":{"name":"Proceedings of the 9th ACM International Conference on PErvasive Technologies Related to Assistive Environments","volume":"9 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2016-06-29","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"124007996","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Assistive systems providing instructions at the workplace have been proposed to overcome increasing cognitive demand during assembly tasks. Commercially available assistive systems provide spatially registered instructions, either by using in-situ projections or head-mounted displays (HMDs). As there is little empirical knowledge about the individual advantages and disadvantages of both approaches, we are interested in comparing both types of systems. Through a user study at a manual assembly workplace, we compare both approaches to a paper baseline. Our results reveal that both in-situ instructions and paper instructions lead to significantly faster task completion times and significantly fewer errors than HMDs. Using additional questionnaires and interviews, we are able to identify the shortcomings of HMD-based instructions and discuss the possibilities of using flexible in-situ instructions for worker assistance.","PeriodicalId":359504,"journal":{"name":"Proceedings of the 9th ACM International Conference on PErvasive Technologies Related to Assistive Environments","volume":"90 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2016-06-29","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"131616140","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The new ITS exploits decision trees built from one dataset per room of a smart home. The datasets are built using a bottle equipped with four class 3 RFID tags and by dividing each room into qualitative zones. The paper discusses how to exploit positioning from decision trees to implement real-time tracking. The long term goal of this ITS is to extract qualitative spatial information to improve recognition of daily living activities' granularity. The results obtained are very encouraging as the average accuracy of the trajectories recognized is over 75%.","PeriodicalId":359504,"journal":{"name":"Proceedings of the 9th ACM International Conference on PErvasive Technologies Related to Assistive Environments","volume":"1 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2016-06-29","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"131203982","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

It is mainly due to the increase of the ageing population and people with cognitive diseases. Several technologies were developed to make the use of assistive technology more acceptable and comfortable for the elderly in order to reduce or even replace the human assistance. However, there are many challenges and issues, especially in the interaction between the elderly and assistive systems. To make the system interact as human beings, emotions were used. In this paper, we present a new approach to recognize emotions based on facial expressions represented by images. It is based on a new method for feature selection based on distances. We also suggest the use of the well-known K-Nearest Neighbor classifier with optimized parameters. This approach is found effective when tested using two different datasets of images.","PeriodicalId":359504,"journal":{"name":"Proceedings of the 9th ACM International Conference on PErvasive Technologies Related to Assistive Environments","volume":"15 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2016-06-29","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"115775880","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
