Methods currently used for clutter model classification utilise maxi\" likelihood based techniques, requiring large data sets. However since the data is generally non-stationary, only short segments of the received radar signal can be used in practice. There is a need for a robust classification strategy that is able to accurately disaiminate between clutter models when only short data segments are available. In this paper we present a constant fake alarm rate (CFAR) detection scheme which improves the power for classification of a clutter model under given situations. The proposed scheme utilises a knowledge-based approach which mask decisions made by a classifier based on the Kullback-Leibler mean information criterion for statistical model identification.","PeriodicalId":359344,"journal":{"name":"Fourth International Symposium on Signal Processing and Its Applications","volume":"77 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1900-01-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"129361431","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

This paper introduces and compares three approaches to the estimation of SNR using the symbol soft decisions when the signal constellation is unknown. The techniques discussed also provide estimates of the constellation symbol coordinates. The first approach, based on the ‘k-means’ technique [2] for partitioning a multi-dimensional population into a number of sets, forms estimates of the constellation statistics by grouping the complex soft decisions into clusters. The second and third techniques use properties of histograms formed from the projection of soft decisions onto the in-phase (I) and quadrature (Q) axes to estimate the signal power and noise variance.","PeriodicalId":359344,"journal":{"name":"Fourth International Symposium on Signal Processing and Its Applications","volume":"96 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1900-01-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"125405078","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Preprocessing, by median filtering, of a cloudy sky image containing an indeterminable number of single-pixel point sources in a 256 x256 image firstly isolated the point sources from the background, such that the point sources were based on a zero background level. The point sources may contain either a single point, or two closely spaced point sources, which are unresolved in the original image due to the diffraction limit of the simulated imaging process. Wiener deconvolution was used to restore the image within the passband, resulting in an extremely high level of high frequency oscillation, shrouding the restored points of interest. Application of five iterations of the Ah4 simultaneously suppressed the noise and enhanced the amplitude of the correctly resolved point sources. The method was shown to successfully nestore single pixel point sources in an image, even if the point sources were located with as few as two pixels separating them. Six pixel separation of the points is about ithe limit that could be resolved with the naked eye.","PeriodicalId":359344,"journal":{"name":"Fourth International Symposium on Signal Processing and Its Applications","volume":"538 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1900-01-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"123368914","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The problem which we report on here is one where the compression rate must be maximized for the purposes of archival, but the compressed information must be available at a later date for the purposes of identifying a new speaker. The new speaker may or may not have been recorded in the archived database. As would be expected, the ability to identify a particular speaker when compared to the compressed speech information is impaired, in a manner which is related to the degree of compression. Furthermore, automatic speaker recognition algorithms depend upon a parameterization of the speech which may not be available in the quantity required in the compressed data 'stream. We present here our results in identifying a speaker using two common methods applied to the data stream resulting from a class of spectral vector compression algorithms. It is shown experimentally that a simplified. easily-computed distance metric algorithm is somewhat more sensitive to the compression process when compared to a substantially more complex multivariate statistical modelling method.","PeriodicalId":359344,"journal":{"name":"Fourth International Symposium on Signal Processing and Its Applications","volume":"26 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1900-01-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"125103412","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The technique presented, is based on an Lh4S iterative approach, but has imporrantmodifications to accommodate the constraints imposed by the absence of phase information in the radar return. The algorithm also operates at a higher resolution than the sample points, in order to compensate for the lack of range and azimuth resolution. This new technique is compared to standard iterative algorithms in both the time and frequency domains. Simulated radar data is used to demonstrate the benefits of the algorithm.","PeriodicalId":359344,"journal":{"name":"Fourth International Symposium on Signal Processing and Its Applications","volume":"1 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1900-01-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"131289751","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

However, a huge amount of storage space is usually involved in studies to keep the tracer time activity images. In this paper, we present an approach based on optimal sampling schedule design to minimise the storage space. A practical example is used to illustrate this technique. The constraint approximation is realized through a cubic smoothing function, which results in an unconstrained optimization problem for envelope-constrained filter design. The solution of this unconstrained problem is suitable for real-time update. It is shown that compared to the previously used quadratic smoothing function, the cubic smoothing function leads to the establishment of the adaptive algorithms with much more desirable performance. In particular, the step size of the cubic constraint approximation based adaptive algorithms can also be chosen in a more flexible manner. Numerical examples illustrate the main results.","PeriodicalId":359344,"journal":{"name":"Fourth International Symposium on Signal Processing and Its Applications","volume":"14 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1900-01-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"114860650","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
