Some studies have suggested that up to 82.7% of parents noted that their child was upset by particular sensations, with reports of between 80% and 100% of individuals with autism having sensory processing difficulties. While patients with ASD are reported to be at an increased risk for caries, treatment can be difficult owing to variations in levels of cooperation during dental examinations. Within high-caries risk individuals, fissure sealants arrest the caries process in early caries lesions stages. Composite resin (CR) sealants have been recognized as the gold standard FS material; however, new evidence has emerged in relation to GIC sealants in their applicability and longevity. This review provides evidence-based information supporting the effectiveness of GIC sealants in caries prevention in comparison to CR sealants, by assessing their properties, methodology and utility in healthy and anomaly-affected teeth. Failure of root canal treatments can occur when ideal technical standards for control of the root canal infection are not achieved. Sometimes, extra-radicular infection may prevent a successful treatment outcome. Teeth with post-treatment peri-apical infection can be managed by either non-surgical or surgical root canal re-treatment, both of which aim to restore health to the peri-apical tissues and prolong the survival of the tooth in the oral cavity. Using PTFE tape as the sole method for isolation can be time consuming, and occasionally presents challenges. The approach described in this Technique Tip involves manually holding a matrix holder to safeguard neighbouring teeth from sandblasting and etching contamination, providing a pragmatic resolution to these issues. It seamlessly integrates with the established practice of using PTFE tapes to prevent unwanted bonding and cement attachment to adjacent teeth. CPD/Clinical Relevance: Combining PTFE and matrix bands optimises bonding of indirect ceramic restorations for periodontal health and efficiency.","PeriodicalId":35831,"journal":{"name":"Dental update","volume":"39 2","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2024-02-02","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"139811050","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

It explains the concept of ‘satisficing’ (as opposed to ‘maximizing’) in dentistry, and illustrates how subconscious bias and self-interests might lead supposed experts to promote arbitrary aspirational standards and confuse them with what the law expects (the Bolam Test standard) and what is genuinely in the best interests of an individual patient. It is argued that sound, patient-centred pragmatic planning and treatment is equally valid, with wider applicability than routinely defaulting to a self-serving ‘maximalist’ approach, often on spurious grounds. CPD/Clinical Relevance: The ‘satisficing’ concept has wide and profound application across many fields of dentistry; this first part explains the basic principles and how and why it is relevant to various aspects of practical dentistry and also to our understanding of professionalism.","PeriodicalId":35831,"journal":{"name":"Dental update","volume":"12 4","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2024-02-02","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"139870775","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Despite the global burden of oral diseases, notably dental caries and periodontitis, advancements in dentifrice technology have contributed to the decline in caries prevalence, although periodontitis remains a challenge. The historical perspective outlines the transition from abrasive powders to fluoride-enriched pastes, emphasizing the significance of toothbrushing frequency and technique, alongside the use of dentifrices, for effective plaque control and caries prevention. The modern era has seen a proliferation of dentifrice variations, with a focus on cosmetic attributes often overshadowing therapeutic benefits. The review also discusses the environmental considerations of dentifrice production and disposal, highlighting the shift towards sustainable packaging and ingredient transparency. The market analysis reveals a mature industry with a projected growth, influenced by consumer preferences and oral hygiene awareness. CPD/Clinical Relevance: Regular toothbrushing with fluoridated dentifrice remains a cornerstone of oral hygiene practices, directly influencing the reduction of plaque accumulation and the incidence of caries and periodontitis.","PeriodicalId":35831,"journal":{"name":"Dental update","volume":"19 8","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2024-02-02","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"139871125","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The tooth had a history of trauma when the patient was 6 years old. A cone beam computed tomography scan of the tooth revealed an incidental finding of a transverse root fracture that was otherwise not visible on the peri-apical radiograph. This highlights the diagnostic challenge of peri-apical radiographs and emphasizes the value of three-dimensional imaging in endodontics. It also highlights the importance of timely referral and management of traumatic dental injuries to reduce the risk of complications in the future.
