We present the case of a 19-year-old patient who presented with a discoloured and symptomatic mandibular canine tooth with complex root canal morphology. The tooth was located at the site of a previous alveolar fracture. Delayed presentation had led to severe external infection-related (inflammatory) root resorption. The protocol and rationale for non-surgical management of the case in a multi-visit approach is outlined. It provides the user with visual, auditory and tactile stimuli for an immersive experience. Popularity of VR devices has snowballed, with use in domestic, education, healthcare and business sectors. We present a patient who jumped off a plank into water in a virtual reality world, while in reality, the patient had jumped into their TV unit, striking their chin. This resulted in a displaced and mobile fracture of the mandibular parasymphysis that required reduction and fixation under a general anaesthetic. This novel technology is altering our world's interface in multiple fields, but there are potential risks associated with fully immersing ourselves in another world. CPD/Clinical Relevance: It is important to be aware of trauma that can result from injuries during virtual reality headset use.","PeriodicalId":35831,"journal":{"name":"Dental update","volume":null,"pages":null},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2023-10-02","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"135902730","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Among its many functions, the most significant is being able to visualize aspects of the oral cavity that are not accessible visually with an appropriate operator posture. Various mouth mirrors are available and can differ in their design, head size and reflective surface. While in use, clinicians may encounter multiple circumstances that can hamper the quality of the reflected image. This in turn can negatively influence the diagnosis and treatment delivered. Hence, the purpose of this Technique Tip is to provide information on various designs of mouth mirrors as well as to provide solutions to counter the challenges associated with the use of mouth mirrors. Clinical relevance: Sharp, bright, reflected images may be provided for dental clinicians using simple methods and other equipment associated with the mouth mirror.","PeriodicalId":35831,"journal":{"name":"Dental update","volume":null,"pages":null},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2023-10-02","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"135901532","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

When combined with clinical examination, this radiographic view provides important diagnostic information in the management of caries in the posterior dentition. In this article, the use of extra-oral bitewings will be explored. The introduction of a decision tree provides the dental practitioner working in either a primary or secondary care setting, a pathway to assist with deciding the optimal radiographic prescription. CPD/Clinical Relevance: Extra-oral bitewings can be a useful radiographic tool for dental caries diagnosis in the mixed dentition.","PeriodicalId":35831,"journal":{"name":"Dental update","volume":null,"pages":null},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2023-10-02","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"135902732","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The postulated cellular process is a malfunction in the eruption mechanism, which fails to completely drive the tooth along its eruption axis. The aetiology is genetic, with a specific link to a mutation in the parathyroid hormone 1 receptor gene, hence a familial pattern of inheritance may be observed. Diagnosis and treatment can be challenging, often necessitating an interdisciplinary approach. There has been a dramatic increase in cases of syphilis in the Western world, with cases tripling in England between 2010 and 2019. Syphilis can present in a dental setting and dentists should enquire about sexual history if suspicious of syphilis to ensure early diagnosis and treatment. However, before starting RCT under IV sedation with midazolam, clinicians should consider obtaining a thorough medical history and written, informed consent including any significant or unavoidable risks. A responsible adult escort should also accompany the patient to their appointment.
