Faculty are using a variety of software solutions to find, retrieve, organize, annotate, cite, and share information, including library resources. This article discusses the significance of situating discovery, the act of finding new information, within software central to the research workflow, such as citation management or word processing software. The current status of discovery of library resources within citation management software is outlined, along with expected future developments. {"title":"Information use among first-year students in health sciences: Is an intervention needed?","authors":"Karen Marie Øvern","doi":"10.18352/LQ.10212","DOIUrl":"https://doi.org/10.18352/LQ.10212","url":null,"abstract":"This study investigated what strategies first-year students in health sciences on three university colleges in Norway used when faced with a new written assignment. Questionnaires were distributed among health students on three campuses, and interviews with librarians at the campuses were held after initial data collection. The study showed that many students lack basic information skills, but are not aware of it themselves, that many first-year students are choosing familiar information sources like Google and text-books from their reading lists, and it showed that librarians at their institutions had experienced that many first-year students could get by with these sources. In the past, academic library directors’ strategic decision-making process has been infrequently researched. This study researched academic library directors’ strategic decision-making process and resources. During this pilot project, seven LIBER member library directors from five different countries were interviewed. As a result, two main generalizations based on these interviews can be made. The digital transformation also holds true for those disciplines that continue to rely on the scholarly monograph as a publication format and means for reputation building, namely the Humanities and the Social Sciences with a qualitative approach (HSS). In our paper we analyse the reasons why the monograph has not yet reached its full potential in the digital paradigm, especially in the uptake of Open Access and innovative publishing options. The resulting NMS Roadmap recommended seven components, believed to be critical for the provision of a national monograph infrastructure. This paper discusses how Jisc prioritised three of the recommendations and started planning for the development of a National Bibliographic Knowledgebase (NBK) in association with key stakeholders representing UK Higher Education and the British Library. To develop this policy, an analysis was carried out of existing frameworks and principles on data management (such as the FAIR principles), as well as of the data management practices in the organisation. These practices were defined through interviews with research groups. Using criteria drawn from the existing frameworks and principles, certain research groups were identified as ‘best-practices’: cases where data management was meeting the most important data management criteria. These best-practices were then used to inform the RDM policy.
