The essay reviews current semantically-informed practices and conceptualisations, standards and applied frameworks on this topic, with a focus on Intangible Cultural Heritage (ICH). In particular, the essay identifies and reviews the scope of applied frameworks for a semantically informed digital documentation of intangible cultural heritage by memory institutions, a topic with limited contributions in academic literature so far. The essay starts with an overview of the current digital transformation in the GLAM sector. Following a data centered approach, it analyses conceptual models of linked data in connection to digital heritage. It further reviews the working models and metadata schemas of linked data in particular for Intangible Cultural Heritage including innovative examples and finally, discusses challenges and new concepts for future research on the topic.

LIBER’s Annual Conference constitutes one of the main channels of communication for the information professionals of the European research libraries. Each year, a parallel universe arises during the conference’s activities in the social media, especially in the micro blogging sphere of Twitter, where conference attendees express their opinions about trending topics, organizational aspects and conference talks. The current study proposes that the implementation of sentiment analysis to data generated on that sphere could be a useful decision-making tool for both the organizational committee and the host organization. By applying a sentiment analysis on 5,500 tweets regarding the LIBER 47th Annual Conference in Lille, France, we highlight the positive and negative aspects of the specific event as they were mentioned by Twitter users.

This paper aims to assess the application of the Recommendations in the area of user training, particularly in information literacy; in digital content management, including data and scientific production; and in the direct support to students, teachers and researchers, not forgetting the aspects of space management and information resources as a whole. For this purpose, a questionnaire survey was used for higher education libraries in Portugal. The most implemented areas are information literacy and the management of institutional repositories, and the one with the lowest level of the application relates to support for editorial projects.

The present collection consists of about 16.51 million pages mainly in Finnish and Swedish. Out of these about 7.64 million pages are freely available on the web site https://digi.kansalliskirjasto.fi/etusivu . The copyright restricted part of the collection can be used at six legal deposit libraries in different parts of Finland. The time period of the open collection is from 1771 to 1929. The last nine years, 1921–1929, were opened in January 2018. This paper presents briefly the ground truth Optical Character Recognition data of about 500 000 words that has been compiled at the NLF for development of an improved OCR process for the Finnish collection. We discuss compilation of the data generally and show results of the new OCR process in comparison to current OCR, using the ground truth data as an evaluation benchmark. We also show with real newspaper data of 30 years and 109 million words that the re-OCRing process is improving the quality of the OCRed data.

It explores what skills, competencies and knowledge staff with doctoral qualifications can bring to library research support services. \u0000Context: Librarians working in research support areas need different skills to the skills academic librarians have traditionally needed. There is currently a gap in the training which those undertaking professional librarianship qualifications receive, in relation to the skills needed for research roles. Simultaneously, expansion in the numbers of PhD students in the UK in recent years has been accompanied by the professionalisation of researcher skills development, equipping students with transferable skills for careers outside, as well as inside, academia. \u0000Methodology: This paper compares the skills’ needs of research librarians with the competencies and skills of doctoral graduates, specifically in the UK context (as articulated in the Vitae Researcher Development Framework). It also surveys and discusses the skill-set and qualifications of research support staff employed at three UK research libraries. \u0000Results: Understanding the needs and, importantly, the behaviours, of researchers is integral to the provision of a successful library research support service. Many of the skills which are necessary for library graduates to have, are those that are already identified as essential researcher skills. The peer-level support offered by library staff with research backgrounds has a role in developing stronger relationships between the library and the academy.

Less attention is paid to evaluating the activity of designing. To address this managerial question, we present a study that examines UCD performance in the context of digital library services' development. The study builds on the existing knowledge on library and design evaluation and examines the literature from two theoretical perspectives: performance management and temporalities. As the main contribution of this paper, we introduce the conceptual 360-Degree Temporal Benefits Model, which captures the situation where many stakeholders are involved in a design activity of a digital library service. Application of the model on two cases demonstrates that the stakeholders can assess the benefits of UCD very differently. We argue that the new model helps in framing the change from the measurable design benefits towards more ambitious and ambiguous public values.

The project uses a comprehensive scoping methodology, an Advanced Scoping Meta-Review (ASMR), to identify significant topics in an emergent subject area; Optical Nanospectroscopy. An agreed mapping of the subject is derived in order to deliver a pedagogically coherent structure for a three-volume textbook set intended primarily for Early Stage Researchers (ESR). The review process is based on some earlier scoping methodologies, but is devised for a project involving a large number of individuals collaborating in authorship of the textbooks. A description of the scoping process is given, noting both the specific work in searching for and retrieving the appropriate literature, the qualitative and quantitative analysis and ordering of the search results, and placing the meta-review in the wider context of the editorial process to develop the Nanospectroscopy textbooks. The meta-review is employed in a special way in order to map an emergent subject area for the purpose of textbook development, rather than the more traditional use of such reviews to answer specific research questions. The importance of the library-led searching which underpinned this activity is emphasised. The successful outcome of this process resulting in agreement on the detailed content of three volumes is discussed. The paper ends with a critical evaluation of the lessons that can be drawn from this project.
